| The hour was early, the sun still low. In the hours that would follow their predecessors, the day would make a journey, peaking at noon when the sun would, as always, rise above the hills and fail to be obscured by any clouds that meandered its way, instead blazing downwards upon Konohagakure no Sato and its many citizens. Among them, Saitou Masaki, a junior Jônin on a little journey of his own. Many journeys, in fact. The journey his life would take, a path heavily unknown but much anticipated and probably filled with a mixture of wonder and, due to his line of work, immense danger. Another journey, the journey to promotion, something he eagerly awaited for respect, a status of renowned ability and a revered title were brought with his ascension to a higher rank. And of course, the only non-metaphorical journey he had embarked upon recently, the journey out of the village. His traversal would not take him far from the boundaries of his home, the place in which he resided. Indeed, thankfully, this was not going to be another occasion upon which he left the country, for they never seemed to turn out too well. The most recent of which had been to visit an uncle he'd been completely unaware he had, and his existence did indeed come as a surprise. Unfortunately, the circumstances of the trip were far from good. Telling a relative of the death of their brother was never fun, particularly when this 'holiday' had also entailed remaining undercover despite the intrusion of Kumogakure shinobi, who, as he'd found, were rather hostile. On top of that, he'd also had to complete a mission whilst there, which lead him deep into the underworld of a port-side town mafia, and resulted in him eating a pie with human inside it. Not quite the holiday Thomas Cook had guaranteed him.
However, his journey today was much less sinister. Well, it was still official business, and there was a heavy sauce of detective work with a hint of mystery, and possibly some combat for desert, if he felt like it. The disappearance of a cargo convoy had set off some minor alarm bells, and eventually the shinobi village had been involved. In times like these, caravan or shipment robberies were something one had to be rather wary of. Many merchants had taken to employing body guards in order to allow them safe passage throughout the world. Normally, Konoha was a rather safe area. Indeed, it still was, but even the glorious land of Hi no Kuni was not without its bandits and its thuggish scum, and when they did cause trouble to arise, well, somebody had to be dispatched to deal with them. On a more normal occasion, such a job might entail going with the convoy and giving them peace of mind as they went on their way. Unfortunately, some merchants were unable to spare the cash required for such things. Hiring a decent enough shinobi, or even a group of them, could be expensive work, and might take a large cut off the profits that they turned over. So, naturally, some people were unwilling to spare such a thing for the benefit of their own safety. The cargo convoy in question was of such a nature, but now it had gone missing, with the merchants and the people involved not having been seen for a fair while now. Saitou's job would be to use the detective skills honed by his above average intelligence and his experience of such things in a less than pleasant area or time in order to discover the location and situation of the travelling band, and, if they were in trouble, help them out. Of course, were they dead, it would be up to him to bring those responsible to justice.
It was in the early hours of the evening last night that Saitou had been given this task, the not too massive burden bundled onto his shoulders without so much as a piece of forewarning, giving him little time to prepare. Of course, as a shinobi with a rather large and always growing amount of experience, it was expected of him to always be ready for such eventualities as a short notice task. He was from particularly off set because of the sudden nature of this mission. Time was of the essence, as the merchants may have been in grave danger and required his assistance, hence him having to leave as soon as he possibly could. The items he'd amassed before leaving were a combination of standard and unique equipment. He'd brought along with him his flare and the like, and made sure to have all his run of the mill kunai and shuriken holstered, cleaned and ready to go. In the likely event that he encountered any hostile entities, he'd be more than ready to fight. Of course, even if he hadn't brought along with him such things, he had a wide range of jutsu that required no weaponry or equipment at all. Saitou was a fighter that relied upon a wide range of long distance attacks. He could utilise his summon, ninjutsu or any genjutsu known to him to fight effectively. Combat was something he'd always been rather interested in, and years of working as a shinobi had helped him to perfect his own technique.
Departing his fair village through the gates with the nod of a fellow shinobi, Saitou found a nice spot some fifty metres outside the village walls and sat down, crossing his legs. He remained in this position for a short while, brainstorming and allowing his mind to meander over possibilities. There was little to think about or plan in these early stages, but he wished to go through it anyway. Swathed in the black of his long button coat, something he felt very detective like whilst wearing, he ran a hand through his hair. Beneath the coat, he had adorned his wiry body in the usual combat clothes, meaning he could throw off the cumbersome attire at a moments notice to be ready for battle. Saitou rose as he finished his small thinking escapade. He was to head in the general direction the caravan troupe had been heading, speak to locals, attempt to find any clues and see if any disturbances had been noticed in the nearby area. Not a difficult task by any means, but one that interested him regardless. |
