Most people would undoubtedly be despairing over the lack in higher-ranking shinobi, undoubtedly so. Kimiko was more than aware that both her husband and adoptive brother were both worried beyond belief as it was, although she had no idea why. They now had a larger amount of Genin, due to a recent graduation from the Academy, and that gave her plenty of hope for the future. The more younger shinobi they had, the greater their village would become as the Will of Fire continued to pass down through the generations; it was something that Konoha was famous for, after all. While it was indeed a worry that they had a lack in Jounin-ranked and Chuunin-ranked ninja across the village, the Hokage herself was not in the least bit interested about that much. Promotions were all in the works for numerous shinobi that she could think of, so that was not in itself a big issue. She was instead feeling rather excited, something which none of her few helpers could comprehend. It was plural, not so much because of her own needs, but rather the insistence of help being put upon her. First, she had her Administrative and general aide, a childhood friend of hers named Kaito, whom she had protected for many a time in their youth. He seemed to find it his duty to now help in the best way he could, utilising his famed intelligence and sharp mind/ skill in the written field. Then there was Yoroi, her younger brother and Sennin of the village, who insisted that in difficult situations she should take his counsel. This was mainly down to her ‘softer’ side to being a shinobi, which had worked thus far in times of peace and was slowly changing the hearts and minds of others, but was sometimes deemed too weak. He was also her main bodyguard, due to being highly ranked in the Protection Service. Next was her own husband, Toshiro, who was mainly there for moral support whenever she may need it. He too was a Sennin, part of Konoha’s powerhouse (which included herself), and thus proved to be a very strong asset to her politically as well as in her own personal life. Lastly, there was a man named Sadao, who had worked alongside the Hokage and the village council for many years now. He helped as her go-to with the sometimes uncompromising, pompous council members.

Of course she thought herself unbelievably lucky to have a whole team helping her in the very demanding job as opposed to just relying on the one aide. It allowed her to share out the burdens and do what she loved doing most of all alongside protecting the village; tutoring the next generation to become strong, reliable shinobi for the future. “Are you sure that you’re able to do this, Kimi?” Her aide asked, impatiently tapping a pen against his clipboard as he looked over the ebony-haired woman’s shoulder at the new paperwork she had recently filed regarding teams for the village. On it, were a collection of photographs from the professional profiles of the newest team, which included three fifteen year-olds as the students, and a very familiar face topping it as the sensei. Kimiko turned and smiled at the orange-haired man at her side, nodding her head firmly and gently placing the file down on her currently spotless desk. “Absolutely! I’ve cleared enough space in my schedule to manage another team with no problems. The correct question to ask is whether you’ll be able to cope with the extra loads of paperwork in my absence.” She quirked at eyebrow slightly as she looked at him, obviously expecting the reaction and answer to come as she suddenly grinned. Kaito huffed and his grip on the clipboard tightened his sea blue eyes narrowing a little before nodding his head just as firmly as his current companion had done. “Of course I will.” He paused, glancing at the pile of paperwork teetering in the corner of the room and inwardly groaned. Maybe he should reconsider. “You know, Kimi…”

But where the Hokage had once been sitting was now only empty air. Her aide sighed in a fashion which best explained his current feelings on the matter of having to stay late just to finish this paperwork, but amongst those downcast emotions of his, a small smirk placed itself upon his lips. He wouldn’t have agreed to becoming Kimiko’s aide if he wasn’t aware of how she was as a person, and while she had managed to grow up to become the very mature, powerful Hokage, sometimes she reminded him of the hyperactive, very childish kid that had saved his behind on more than one occasion. So he couldn’t truly complain.

The ebony-haired woman was chuckling to herself as she walked down the main street leading from the Administration Building, inhaling the sweet air around her more than happily. It had been a long time since she had been permitted to leave her office, due to an influx of new missions and the whole ‘team’ issue, but finally it had been resolved so that she may begin her favourite job. Yes, it meant that two teams were now in her care, but that wasn’t so much of an issue. All she wanted to do was help these Genin, because she was more than aware of a lot of their situations. One, she remembered had experienced issues with teams before; this was the female Genin, whose name was Satsune. Another was one that had only entered into the shinobi profession late, and thus had only just graduated from the Academy, one of the males called Suzaku. The last Genin on the team was a boy who had travelled for a couple of years, and as such hadn’t been on a team since graduating, the final male named Masamori. Their new sensei found it important that youngsters like them should gain experience working as a team, and learning to work together. Even ANBU, dubbed the most independent branch of working shinobi, had to work in cells on big missions. It was a fundamental skill that nobody would learn until they were placed in such a situation that would make them collaborate with one another. And from reading the profiles of these boys and girl, she realised that it would become quite a challenge to use the ‘normal’ methods that she would otherwise utilise. If for no other reason than Satsune being on the squad. All she could go by were the official profiles in which they were documented as being part of a number, so she would have to see how they interacted and what their personalities were like for herself. Thus far, she had noticed a correlation between their skillsets, of how each of them utilised the Weaponry skill. Even including herself to an extent, being proficient in the usage of such an art (although it was not one of her first skills).

She walked past the famed Training Grounds, and on again to the village’s gates, where she smiled and waved at the guards currently on duty. They allowed her through with no quarrel, and understandably so. Even if she hadn’t notified them of her leaving the village well in advance, they would have allowed her to do so anyway. She started her short journey to a small beaten path, not far down the main road leading to and from Konoha. Once on it, she ventured to the large caged-off area known affectionately as The Forest of Death. Even from a distance, one could hear the strangled and strange cries of monstrous beasts within. Why had she chosen this location specifically for her team to meet and undergo its test, you may ask? For no other reason that, if one did not work together with others in this place, they would undoubtedly die. And so, she waited there patiently for her students to arrive, having specified the place and time in a letter she had sent to each one of them.

Young Masamori was awoken by someone's incessant tapping and scratching of the window glass. He must have had dozed off whilst tending to the birds last night, for it was the definite smell of animals that had greeted his nose. The revelation also gave him a clue as to the origin of the sound; his sleepy eyes looked around until they found the majestic beast - it seemed much larger than a pigeon, but Masamori couldn't confidently identify what breed it was. His mind dared to nickname the bird a 'falcon', but in hindsight, the notion was rather silly and he must have been sleepy and had probably suffered from a mild, dozy hallucination, to conjure such a thought.

The bird, once allowed inside, circled him angrily, making so much noise the youth was tempted to shoo it away before it awoke the whole household and before the sounds completed Masamori's own process of awakening. He just wanted to go back to sleep. "God damn bird", he cursed, flailing his arm as if to order the 'falcon' to land on it and stay calm. It did get the message eventually, thankfully, and the little letter was pried away from the bird just before it shot off again, its angry shrieks echoing around the little room for a while still, even though it had long flew away, its temperament going away with it. Masamori opened the message with an equal degree of drowsy weariness and excitement; it was addressed to him.

His grey eyes darted over the parchment swiftly, his face expressing the utmost surprise; his brows had raised themselves as high as they could, and it was evident he was fully awake now. The Hokage is my sensei? he mused silently, the notion bringing a mixture of emotions and thoughts. The Yuki couldn't quite decide if he had found this revelation to be a happy one or not. He simply stood there, shell-shocked. It took him a minute, perhaps, or two to remind himself of the letter's contents - namely, the time and location of the meeting... a meeting which was starting very very soon. Crap!

The youth ran inside his room, and was out faster than one could say crapimlatemynewsenseithehokageisgoingtokillme! He had managed to change his clothes, wash his face with a quick splash of water, and grab all of his gear. Then he was out, and running, dashing down the stairs, through the corridors, dodging the drowsy servants of the Yuki clan, who looked more so bewildered than he had moments ago. He was at the door, and then past it, and then outside the gate, sprinting.

Masamori was surprisingly un-messy when he reached the village gates. If anything, the sprint had kicked some energy and life into his body, and he looked like a youth should look - invigorated. With a large sword - a nodachi to be precise - on his back and a spear in his hand, the guards gave him a weary look before he was allowed outside. After a few calm steps, he began running again, aware that he was not doing so well for time.

But, alas, he seemed to have reached the place that had been specified, and with the exception of his sensei, the Hokage herself, he was first! How exciting. And it didn't even look like Masamori exhausted; truth was, he had stopped short of the meeting place, giving himself a few seconds to catch his breath. Thus the Hokage would have seen him enter her field of vision calmly, garbed in splendid, myrtle or pine green clothes; his face was a handsome mask. His grey eyes looked around curiously, analysing what little of the "Forest of Death" he could see. A while later, when he seemed to have satisfied his curiosity with the dark trees and other thick, ominous foliage which he could see, he finally looked at his new sensei. He had seen her before, or at the very least, people tended to paint such a vivid picture of her that he seemed to know that it was her from the first moment he had seen her. "Ohayo Gozaimasu" he muttered in his usually ambiguous tone, the voice quiet and soft enough to almost be considered a whisper and yet loud enough for her to hear regardless. He had stopped short of her, a bunch of steps away, and he had no real desire to close the distance.

She reminded him of Satsune; as soon as that thought entered his mind, he could feel his awkwardness intensify. His eyes promptly darted away from her to escape the woman's gaze. He didn't know what it was about them - these two 'girls' in particular. Puberty was a mysterious thing.

So today was the day.

Today Satsune would be forced to be her team.  The team she had been forcefully and completely against her will been put into.  Honestly, what was she supposed to do with two mama's boys dragging along and slowing down her progress?  After she had met them at the diner, she had not been impressed at all.  Albeit slightly curious to see if Snowflake truly was a medic ninja.  She had heard it was a difficult speciality and required good control of the Chakra and a decently functioning brain.  And that was mostly the reason why she felt curious and slightly surprised upon the realisation that he might be a medic.  Because honestly, she was sure his brain was the same size as the source for his nickname; the size of a snowflake.  And she was also pretty sure it'd manage to melt as easily as a tiny, vulnerable snowflake when under pressure or in a hot spot.  Who knows, maybe he screwed his way into the hospital.  Went through the ranks of the doctors.  Probably the male doctors.  He does have a pretty face, knows how to dress properly, and has twinkly little grey eyes and long hair; so I wouldn't be surprised if he went 'that' way in life.  Shopped around the corner.  -Really- liked meat sticks.  He seemed to also get along with their other team partner, and that guy was a total 'dick'; so perhaps there was no coincidence there.

She had dressed in her usual attire (although making sure to be wearing something a bit sturdy, since she didn't know what the day would bring) before leaving the house, the letter from the Hokage in her pocket (after Satsune had given it a good scowl).  Her dark purple coat was zipped and buttoned all the way up, and underneath that she was wearing a black buttoned up shirt, and sturdy shorts.  On her feet she was wearing the boots with the hidden knives, around the left one her forehead protector was wrapped, and she had the knife holsters along with the knives in them, strapped around her thighs.  The only reason she had been allowed to leave the house in something as 'manly' as shorts, was because her mother hadn't been home and she had bribed her little sister to not tell.  Bribed her with the promise of letting her live for a few more years.

On Satsune's right hip was her ninja pouch, and she had also her scrolls strapped against that.  Her bow and arrow quivers were in one of those scrolls.  Around her waist was the little bag which contained small necessary items, along with food and water, and on her left hip was her katana.  Shiny and well taken care of as per usual.  The retractable wrist blade was already attached to her left arm, as she had no intention of letting anyone know about it.  Until of course she would feel the need to use it on someone in particular.  Most probably the amber eyed team-mate if he would dare show up drunk and / or smoking.

That morning when she had received the letter, the girl hadn't particularly felt anything but annoyance.  It didn't matter to her that the Hokage herself, a powerful and very popular woman, was their team leader.  Satsune was sure that the woman was simply like any other human being, but had at least managed to claw her way out of the dirt and into the respectable (not that Satsune would really call it respectable out loud) seat of the Hokage.  Sure, the raven haired teen could appreciate and somewhat respect such power; yet she did just not care.

But if she's so almighty why does she get the lame ass job of teaching Genin how to wipe their asses?

Shrugging to herself, Satsune kept walking at a brisk pace.  Hoping dearly that she was going into the right direction.  Of course, ten minutes later, she had to admit she was lost.  I am pretty sure I have passed that building twice already.  God dammit.  Stopping with a loud sigh, she placed her hands on her hips and looked around in frustration.  She would -never- get out of that village and get into the Forest of Death.  What the heck did that bitch of a Hokage want to do there anyway?  It didn't exactly sit well with Satsune, the thought of having to camp out somewhere in the middle of nowhere with Dumb and Dumber and Queen Hokage.

Just as she had been done standing there for a few minutes, trying to decide if she should keep going on or just try to get back home, a group of small children passed her.  The brats were roughly around the age of 8, but she nonetheless stepped so low as to address them.

"I'll pay you if you show me the way to the village gate."

The three boys looked at each other in surprise but quickly said yes and started leading the way.  It didn't take very long for them to reach the gates, and Satsune sighed out.  This time with relief.

"Alright brats, get on home.  And forget that about the payment, you are too damned primitive to even get the concept of money."

She walked on towards the gates, completely ignoring the protests that rose up behind her.  The guards most probably knew that she was going on a mission, as they simply sized her up and then nodded before allowing her to proceed without any problems.  Although a new problem sort of came up... where the heck was that forest?  She was still on time, although soon she would be cutting it a bit close.  The girl turned around and asked one of the guards, a very big frown on her face in the meanwhile, if he could give her some directions.  That wasn't any problem of course, and after listening to him carefully instructing her; she thought she could manage.  And thus the travelling kept going.  It wasn't too far away, and she just got lost once while going there, but finally Satsune had managed to arrive.

About damn time.

She entered the area where the two were already waiting, her ruby coloured eyes straying over the individuals who stood there.  She had of course met Snowflake, and barely flicked an eyelash in his direction before locking her gaze on the Hokage.  She was a beautiful woman, carried herself obviously with pride and grace as to be expected from her rank.  Yet Satsune's was still borderline hostile before she looked  away in boredom.  The young female was not stupid, and knew that she would probably be better off if she showed a little bit of courtesy.  Yoroi had already hammered that into her head by now.

"Good morning, I'm Hariko Satsune as both of you would probably know."

A simple statement, since the gay dude had already met her; and the Hokage was hopefully smart enough to realize that there was only one girl on her team.  So this is the woman who is the 'sister' of Yoroi. He seems pretty attached to her... so I wonder if she's all that or not. After the rather mentally abusive year in which Yoroi had been training Satsune, she had managed to catch a glimpse into his life. And this woman was a part of that.

Suzaku felt sick. The boy stood, hunched over the sink within the bathroom of the small studio style apartment he had been afforded by the village's military division which deigned that all who served Hi no Kuni in the line of duty were to be granted free housing should they so desire. It wasn't anything luxurious, but it was far better than the living conditions to which the boy had been accustomed to for the entirety of his rather short life. He heaved, his esophagus feeling as though it were suddenly growing shorter in length, the meager contents of his stomach threatening to spill out from between his thin lips. He clenched, both jaw and throat as he tried to force the vomitus back down, swallowing hard before spitting into the sink, a sour and repulsive taste now coating his tongue, lingering and serving as a constant reminder of his general malaise. The saliva that he managed to eject came in long strings, the sight of which quickly bringing the feeling of nausea back to the surface.

He had to pull himself together. There was no way he could be sick on a day like this! Today was important; it being the first official day of being assigned to his new cell. Though the boy wasn't particularly pleased or excited about the prospect of working with Masamori or the sociopathic bitch that was supposed to pass off as a young woman, he did not underestimate the importance of such a meeting; said importance only being underlined by the fact that the leader of their cell was none other than the current Hokage herself, Katsumi Kimiko. Suzaku had admittedly never met her, or really seen her for that matter, but that didn't detract from the significance of the current set of circumstances before him.

"Come on Suzaku...You can do this."

Maybe his nausea was a result of his anxiety. The thought had occurred to him, several times actually. He was nervous, uncharacteristically so. It struck him as odd that the Hokage would personally be overseeing his training. Not yours. The team's. He quickly corrected himself, reminding himself that in the grand scheme of things he was rather inconsequential both to the world and even to the military he now served. An important person like the Hokage wouldn't find much value in an individual like Suzaku. Still, that didn't mean he could just take the day off. If nothing else, he needed to go through the motions of being a ninja in order to maintain this improved lifestyle for both himself and his father. That meant overcoming his anxiety and slightly anti-social tendencies. That meant forcing himself to work with his teammates no matter how disagreeable they were or how unappealing the prospect of being stuck with them was.

The boy continued to stare at haggard form that stood before him in the mirror, his reflection serving as an all too painful reminder of his current state. His eyes drifted toward the scabbed over wound on his right cheek, the place where Satsune had managed to injure him upon their initial meeting. The thought caused him to scowl. He really didn't like her, nor did he like the fact that she had needlessly injured him and likely had managed to leave a permanent mark that would remain with the young male for the rest of his life. It was better not to dwell on it though. His current state of health and his disdain for his female comrade were things he'd have to learn to cope with. With a small grunt he'd push himself from the sink, standing a bit straighter before making his way toward the door, slowly opening it and stepping out into the small living space that he and his father shared. Immediately his sensitive ears picked up the subtle sound of his father's light snoring. The boy's eyes darted in the man's direction, quickly inspecting older male, checking to make sure there was no need for any immediate concern. There was none. The man seemed fine aside from the fact that he was probably completely hammered as was the norm. Suzaku stifled the sigh that fought to escape his throat. There was no time for him to lament or spend long contemplating the issue; he was going to be late if he didn't start to get ready.

Breakfast was out of the question. He doubted he could keep anything down in his current state. Without so much as a glance toward the kitchen area Suzaku began to head toward the small dresser which housed his limited wardrobe. As he moved he began to strip off his sleepwear, tossing the light grey t-shirt on the ground and sliding out of his loose fitting, striped pajama bottoms, allowing them to slide down his legs and pool around his ankles before he stepped out of them, completely nude yet unashamed of the exposure as he knew there was no one to see; his father being completely incapacitated for the time being. He'd dress himself quickly, adorning himself in a pair of black cargo pants that he'd taper off with white athletic tape around the ankles to tie off the flared bottoms which were already beginning to fray. Next came the navy blue short sleeved t-shirt, plain and simple yet slightly too big for his lithe form, just the way he liked it and was all too used to. As if that wasn't enough though, he'd proceed to cover his wiry upper frame with a baggy hooded sweatshirt that was olive green in color, his form practically vanishing in the billowing fabrics that composed the shirt. It felt comfortable and safe and provided the anxious youth a semblance of inner peace as he took a moment to allow himself to sink into the shirts gentle grasp.

A small sigh escaped his lips as a small smile crept across his angular features, but it was short lived and soon his amber hues were scanning the area for his belt and tools. It didn't take him long to find both, quickly wrapping his belt around his waist before securing the satchel along the back, tucked inconspicuously under the loose hooded shirt. The boy then began to distribute the smaller weapons around his person with a practiced quickness that spoke volumes about the sheer number of times he had performed said task, kunai, shuriken, senbon and other knick-knacks and tools finding safe and convenient places within the several pockets that spanned his attire. Next came the kunail holster and sheathed knife, both finding places on his left and right thigh respectively as he secured both through the meticulous manipulations of the straps. There was no way they would come undone unless he willed it so.

Finally, the main attraction was reached, his 'dominant' weapons. Suzaku worked quickly, strapping his ninjato to the back of his belt much in the same manner as he did the ninja satchel, tucking the shot blade's sheath beneath and behind the body of the pouch and further concealing it by allowing the hooded shirt to fall over it as the blade was oriented in a more or less horizontal angle with its hilt pointing to the right side of his body. The gauntlet that housed a hidden, spring-loaded wrist mounted blade was strapped on his right arm before allowing the over-bearing sleeve of his hooded shirt to slide over it, concealing the weapon much like his ninjato; the only hint being the portion of the leather gauntlet that covered his palm and the back of his hand while allowing his fingers to go uninhibited, giving it the appearance of a fingerless glove that he only wore on his right side. The katana, his favored weapon, was worn on his right side, the sheath hanging from his belt in a traditional style that hinted at his preferred handedness.

With everything seemingly in order the youth moved toward the door, making sure not to forget to grab his pack of cigarettes and his favorite metallic hinged lighter along with his wallet and keys. Upon stepping outside, he'd immediately turn to lock the door behind him, ensuring that any who tried to break in to steal what little possessions he and his father had would have that much of a harder time. Once finished, he began to make his way through the village, heading toward the village gates, barely allowing three minutes to pass before he had already managed to light up one of the cigarettes he carried, taking a deep drag from the death stick before moving a hand up to gently grasp at the base with his middle and index fingers, pulling it away as he exhaled a steady stream of tobacco smoke.

The youth moved quickly, his pace paradoxically hitting that of a jog all while he maintained the appearance of a brisk walk. It didn't take the boy long to make it to the gates and beyond, barely paying the guards any regard aside from the subtle motion toward the headband that hung from his belt and over his left thigh, a sign that he was part of the military now and no longer one of the academy's youth. The gave Suzaku no trouble as he exited the village, knowing that such was a regular occurrence for the village's Shinobi.

Eventually the youth would reach his destination, finding it rather quickly despite the fact that he had never ventured to the Forest of Death until today. Still, it wasn't as if it were that hard to find, given the general directions that had been included with the message he had received about today's meeting. Despite managing to find the place with little trouble, it had seemed as though he were the last one to make it. Perhaps his illness had slowed him down more than he had anticipated. He had to admit, even though he had barely expended any effort on the trek here, he was feeling a bit winded, his breathing slightly harder than usual.

"Seems I'm running late..."

His gravelly voice cutting through the morning air as he approached the group, cigarette smoke billowing from his nostrils at the end of his sentence. He'd stop a good five feet from both Masamori and Satsune, already knowing how much both detested his smoking habit; an action done both out of respect for their wishes and out of his own best interest as both were very prone to violence, unreasonably so.

Suzaku's eyes would begin their slow scanning movement as they passed from one team member to the other then finally toward the only adult in the current vicinity. Was this Katsumi, Kimiko, the one known as the "Konoha Blaze"? Was this really the Hokage? She's shorter than I would have imagined...And so young too. Suzaku felt another sigh threatening to escape his throat. He didn't know why, perhaps the youth had been expecting...more. Still, she was the Hokage for a reason, right? Surely someone wouldn't be able to hold the title of the strongest Shinobi in the land if they weren't indeed the strongest.

"Are you...? Are you Katsumi, Kimiko?"

Even Suzaku couldn't hide the doubt in his voice. It was obvious that he was finding it hard to come to terms with the fact that someone who was seemingly so young and innocent looking was indeed the Hokage. She didn't look the part at all, though perhaps there was strength in that. Suzaku had expected someone more intimidating though. A stream of smoke exited the corner of his mouth as his amber hues remained fixated on the older female. He had to admit, even if she didn't look like a Hokage, she was definitely very cute and coming from Suzaku, that was saying something, as the youth had never really been one to take notice in the opposite sex; until today it seemed.

Ever since her huge shift in persona and appearance well over seven years ago, the former Katsumi had found that her body clock had taken huge leaps forward. She was always at least twenty minutes early for any meeting of any kind, and to be any later than that was odd for her. That was why, if ever she was late for a meeting, people would begin to worry. Even though she was so punctual, and always had been during her time as a sensei, she was not particularly irritated by those that didn’t adhere to time restraints. She was used to her husband, after all, who was standardly late to everything by an hour sometimes. That, and she was always so well occupied with her own thoughts that it even occurred to her that so much time had passed. And so, as she waited for her new students to arrive, she surveyed her surroundings and occupied herself in such a way. Her mind was filled with everything except the task at hand, just because there was no reason to be. With nobody to relay her plans to, why would she go back to it when she was already so certain in what would happen? She had been through the scenarios so many times in her head, and she knew exactly how she would explain the task, what the objective was, and how to handle anything in between. For once in a very long time, the Hokage allowed her mind to wander and effectively take a break. She exhaled a deep breath, feeling her shoulders relax as she clasped her hands together in front of her and found her chocolate orbs focusing on the wildlife outside the Forest of Death. These creatures never strayed too close to the closely fenced area, she noticed, and rightly so. The average blackbird would surely be devoured by the much larger grotesque birds of prey that inhabited the fenced-in area. Small mice and rats would become plant food, as the carnivorous plants used their cunning ways to ensnare and digest them. Whatever else that existed outside the Forest of Death knew not to slip through the wire fence, for they had undoubtedly had it ingrained in their very bones from witnessing mishaps of their own kin previously. In a way, the forest was very much like reality in the way it preyed on the weak. It truly was down to survival of the fittest within those barred gates, as in, only deadly things survived. The same could be said of the shinobi world on a wider scale. Yes, shinobi villages nurtured their youngsters until they were able to grasp killing intent for themselves, and thus these places were like safe havens when compared to the lands in between.

Kimiko had witnessed too many horrors away from the heavenly walls of her home village, and she didn’t wish to have any of them repeated if she could help it. It was this, fuelled by a natural desire to help all that she could to fend for themselves, and to protect everyone that could not otherwise fend for themselves, that built her as a person. A soft touch in many ways, perhaps. But still a cold-blooded killer underneath.

On that… cheery thought, she became aware of the sound of footsteps approaching from down the pathway. She raised her head in the direction she had first identified movement from, and smiled as she watched a familiar face emerge into the small clearing before the Forest of Death itself. By familiar, she did not mean a face that she had personally seen. Instead it related to the face she had seen printed on top of Yuki Masamori’s shinobi profile. “Ah, good morning, Masamori.” She greeted him cheerily, noticing how he stopped a fair distance away from her. It wasn’t a long distance, granted, but it seemed far away considering they were currently the only two of their team present. She looked at him curiously but said nothing, not wishing to make him apprehensive or intimidated by her in any way. That being said, she was not a particularly intimidating figure; of that she was well aware. It had not escaped her that he had averted his gaze from her so quickly after first seeing her that it was almost untraceable, and she was left feeling even more confused than she had been before. Luckily, to avoid any awkward attempts to make conversation with the angsty teenager, the next Genin squad member arrived. It was the female, Satsune, whose grating manner did not escape the ebony-haired woman in spite of the obvious attempt to cover it. She smiled at the girl, obviously not perturbed by the very forced action of courtesy whatsoever. “Good morning to you too, Satsune.” She greeted in response. That only left one more, Suzaku, that they were waiting for. Due to not wearing a watch of any sort, the sensei among them wasn’t sure of the time and thus wasn’t aware of whether the boy was late or not.

Not long after the arrival of Satsune, the woman whose senses were highly honed became aware of a set of footsteps approaching them. That, and the smell of… cigarette smoke? She inhaled a little discretely to try and confirm this, but she couldn’t surely be right. She caught sight of a dark-haired boy round the corner, however, and knew from that moment that she saw him holding a cigarette that this was indeed one of her new students, and the last to arrive. While she had no issue with smoking in general, as numerous of her peers at her own age had taken up the habit as a stress relief considering their line of work, she was a little put-out by one so young openly ruining his lungs. She restrained herself from saying anything, instead glancing at the cigarette in a way that would politely suggest ‘Please put that out’, before paying more attention to the boy’s question of who she was. The doubt was obvious to her, more so because she was so well-versed in people and how they portrayed emotions in numerous ways, but she didn’t grow angry at the boy’s question and instead smiled kindly at him. “That’s correct, I am indeed Katsumi Kimiko to the village. Personally, however, I am Hinamori Kimiko. But that isn’t something that you should concern yourselves with.” She unclasped her hands and held them out to her sides, gesturing at the foreboding forest behind her. “You are all here today as part of a team that I will tutor personally. There are certain expectations that I have of you as shinobi of the village, but nothing too lofty that none can hope to attain them. Perfection is the end goal, not the starting point.” She nodded slowly and turned to face the place that she had led her new students to, chocolate orbs shimmering softly as she surveyed the surroundings from the safe side of the fence. “Perhaps it seems bizarre that the Hokage is to be your sensei, of all individuals, but it is my desire to see a strong upholding of our leading skills and tenacity. I was a teacher before I was the leader of Konohagakure, and I still enjoy to pass down knowledge to the next generations to ensure our safety for the future. When I’m dead and gone, it will be you three and your other peers that take over.” She turned her head back over her shoulder to survey the expressions of her new students, and would then reach a hand out to the tall gate allowing admittance into the famed Forest of Death.

“Your task is simple. I have hidden five special scrolls within this forest, and you must retrieve them as a team. They must be collected in a certain order, as I have used a special Fuuinjutsu trap between the five so that if they are picked up in the wrong order, they will detonate and rip you to pieces.” She said the latter part in a rather ironic cheery tone, and laughed, realising that the task was currently sounding very serious and dangerous indeed. “Each scroll is numbered to make things easier for you all. And they are hidden in equally obvious places. Although they might be easy to find, they will not be easy to obtain. After collecting them all, you must then find me in the forest. Maybe that will be the easiest part, but there is the possibility that it might not be.” She pushed open the gate and ushered the three Genin inside. When they had all entered, she turned and swiftly slammed the gate shut, barring and bolting it behind them. Above their heads, the fence continued in a literal cage to keep them inside, as well as the horrible creatures that dwelled within. “I wish you all the best of luck.” With a blur of movement, the ebony-haired woman disappeared in no particularly fathomable direction.

{Scroll Number 1 is hidden in a cave in the centre of the forest, which is inhabited by monstrous spiders, the smallest of which is the size of a bike.
Scroll Number 2 is hidden in the treetops, hanging from a rope which will (upon being pulled) destroy numerous hornet’s nests. It is to be noted that these hornets are each the size of large rats.
Scroll Number 3 is concealed at the bottom of a small pond, which is infested with carnivorous piranhas.
Scroll Number 4 is hidden in an underground cavern, which is safe except for the entrance where a huge bear guards the entrance.
Scroll Number 5 is tied above poisonous plants that have a taste for meat, the smallest of which is the size of an estate car.}

Masamori didn’t appear to react in any particularly distinctive way when his teammates arrived. He did show some surprise at the order in which they showed up however – it struck him as rather odd that Satsune beat Suzaku to the chase. After all, wasn’t Satsune the self-styled princess of the group? The idea of waiting on someone else must have grinded her gears a little at least. Not that Suzaku’s arrival was in any way rewarding. Instead, he showed up smoking a cigarette, and though he paused in good distance of the others, Masamori couldn’t help but scowl. He resisted the urge to lash out at the other boy, or rather, specifically at the cigarette in his hand. How many times had they discussed the matter? Suzaku never learned...

It was curious to see what equipment the others had brought with them for this task. Masamori had carried his usual things though granted, they would have been a new sight to the eyes of both of his teammates - his nodachi was comfortably placed on his back, his spear was clutched tightly in his hand whereas his ninja kit sat quietly by his waist. These were all weapons and items he knew how to use and could use effectively, something that was very important when they were about to enter the most dangerous place in the Fire Country. As for his teammates, well, the Yuki boy wasn’t so sure if they could protect themselves or use whatever items they brought today.  Satsune seemed to be a swordswoman, judging by the sight of her katana, though she carried scrolls and pouches which suggested to Masamori that she was a bit more than that. Good. Suzaku on the other hand, seemed armed to the teeth with weapons that the Yuki youth figured couldn’t have been more than a few days old. He was well aware of his friend’s financial situation, so to see these weapons meant either one of three things – that he stole a lot of money, that he had managed to make a profit on gambling (highly unlikely) or that the administration had provided the weapons for him. Masamori hoped it was the latter that was true. Regardless, the Yuki was doubtful of his friends’ skill; even if Suzaku was good with blades, a weapon took some getting used to. The Yuki had been piercing and throwing his spear for the last five years at the least. He knew what he was doing and, to put it bluntly, which end of the weapon to use where.

The Hokage proceeded with her explanation far more swiftly, than the Yuki imagined she was capable of. She had a look of a politician about her, or maybe a philosopher, not that those were compliments in Masamori’s mind. What he was trying to insinuate was that he had imagined that she would try to give some long-winded, passionate speech (with a lot of gesturing and varying intonation) with the goal of motivating the three and giving them an overall sense of purpose. Instead, he felt like what was achieved instead, was the swift and careless removal of three genin from an area of relative safety, from which they were thrown instead into an area of danger and chaos, with little advice and an obscure goal to complete. So much for guidance, or leadership for that matter. Far too quickly did Masamori found himself being ushered inside, and for that matter, getting locked in by the young woman who had, throughout this short interaction, shown a surprising capacity for double-facedness and faked sweetness. She was surely the perfect role model for Satsune, no?

Once inside, and with the Hokage disappearing so quickly as if she had never been there in the first place (good riddance, Masamori figured), the Yuki found himself standing awkwardly in between his two teammates. Although Suzaku had finished smoking, the stink still clung to him, the smell heavy and unpleasant to the Yuki, who took a step back from his friend only to find himself a little bit closer to Satsune. The notion must have seemed to the Yuki to be just as terrible as breathing in the remnants of Suzaku’s death stick, so he decided to just step back from the both of them. He cringed a little, measuring up the two quietly with his dull, grey eyes.

Although Masamori had never been one to talk much, when the situation demanded for it, and judging by the fact that neither of the two was likely to contribute anything worthwhile or positive, he decided it was probably for the best that he would take the reins of conversation.

“Ok, so as far as I see it, we’re going to be looking for these stupid scrolls for at least a few hours” he began, straight to business, as tended to be his style. “Though this is a team exercise, I feel like splitting up carries more benefits than not and it certainly should seriously cut down the time this task will take us” he continued, putting forward his plan of action. “If we go our separate ways, and then rendezvous back here in an hour or so, we can cover more ground and with some luck, find at least a single scroll if not more. Obviously if someone is in danger, we will need some sort of signal to know that they require our help, but then using a jutsu as a flare should do the trick” he finished, now waiting for his teammates to respond. Going by their personalities, Suzaku would be in favour of being alone whereas Satsune... well, again, she should be in favour of it, but Masamori wasn’t so sure. It was perfectly possible that she had some rare physical condition that demanded that she was constantly in the presence of people she could torment.

Out of the corner of her eye, Satsune noticed 'mister smoker' arrive at the scene finally.  From the information on the papers she had received about this meeting, Satsune finally knew what he was called.  Suzaku.  She however did not look in his direction as she thought that.  Most likely she'd be tempted to throw a projectile at him 'again' if she did, seeing as she could clearly smell the smoke that was lingering in the air. I would have thought he had learned his lesson by now.  She however refrained from commenting or doing anything since their team leader was there; observing and probably judging.  As all had arrived, the Hokage started speaking... and she kept talking and talking.  Satsune groaned softly to herself, fidgeting a bit side to side as she hoped the speech time would be over soon.  Her attention was straying a bit, but she kept her ears open for any part that might possibly interest her.  Like the part about what the heck they were doing here of all places.  Wasn't it easier to meet at the training grounds?  Or a ramen stand?  This was out in the middle of fucking nowhere.

“Your task is simple. I have hidden five special scrolls within this forest, and you must retrieve them as a team. They must be collected in a certain order, as I have used a special Fuuinjutsu trap between the five so that if they are picked up in the wrong order, they will detonate and rip you to pieces.”

The raven haired teen raised a single eyebrow in surprise.  Well then, that didn't sound extreme at aaaall.  Noooope.  Perhaps that wussy looking female was a bit tougher than she seemed at first inspection.  Tougher, and more insane?  What, does she expect me to take part of something so dangerous?  She must have a heat stroke.  Who allowed that crazy bitch to have power at all?  I demand a new Hokage election.  Satsune was starting to have a serious doubt about this whole 'team' thing and this whole 'scroll retrieving' mission of theirs.  The Hokage kept talking, explaining how their last task would be to find her within that..lovely forest..  how fucking troublesome, so not only are we probably going to get blown up but we have to spend hours searching for a deranged woman, within the forest of death.. perfect..  After the explaining, Kimiko ushered them inside and closed the gates securely behind their backs.  Obviously, no one was supposed to be leaving.  Satsune looked back at the gates with regret before turning her attention back towards the ebony haired woman.

“I wish you all the best of luck.”

The hell you do, you just want to blow us up you crazy bitch.

Satsune sighed and looked at the two males on her team after the Hokage had disappeared in a puff of smoke.  Now what would they do?  They'd probably have to establish some 'order' within the team.  Pick a leader of their own, or divide the power of decisions equally.  Not that she'd know anything about how that stuff worked.  Most of all, she just wanted to turn around and go home as this seemed way too troublesome. I guess I must try though.  If she would leave now, Yoroi was certain to kick her ass.  And she'd probably lose the last chance she had of being on a team.

“Though this is a team exercise, I feel like splitting up carries more benefits than not and it certainly should seriously cut down the time this task will take us”

Snowflake was the first one to speak up, and Satsune did not like the least bit of what she was hearing.  Obviously, his brain was just as small as she had thought way back in the academy.  When was splitting up ever a good idea?  It would never lead to anything good, and especially not in a place like -that-.

"What?  Are you fucking kidding me?"

Satsune glared hard at the male before shaking her head.  What a fucking weird idea that was he had.  The biggest problem about it was that she was going to get lost within the first five minutes if she was to be left alone (although they were not supposed to know that).  But there was also a flaw to his logic, a big flaw.  And of course she would not keep quiet about that, her life was at stake after all.  Plus she would never be able to resist the temptation to point out his stupidity.  That was her role on this team.  Perhaps his role was supposed to be the pretty face of the team.  Pretty face with shit for a brain. So what would Suzaku's role be?

"Do you even know what's inside this forest?  I most certainly don't, but I can only bet it's nothing cute and fluffy.  I've heard enough horror stories to know that splitting up is never a good idea.  I for one am not going to enter this damn forest alone and get eaten by something.  You must be insane and borderline retarded if you think I will.  Even more insane than that crazy bitch Hokage."

She waved her hand towards the forest while her voice kept it's steady and rather low tone as per usual, yet the words were fierce and it was obvious that either they were going to be a group or she would -not- be going in there at all.  This was not a weak protest from a scared female, it was a very strong protest from a very determined female that had the power to be a very difficult pain in the ass if she would not be listened to.  If they wanted her help with anything, they would better be ready to listen to what she had to say.

"How can we be faster if we split up and each of us gets attacked in different areas?  Isn't it easier to work together and kill whatever attacks us together?  We have no idea what rank the beasts inside this forest are.  Last time I checked we are all just genin, and if you don't have some secret super powers then I think you will have a good chance of being gobbled up just like us.  So do you have a super power that we don't know about?  Besides, that chick there said that the scrolls were numbered and would -explode- if we pick them up in the wrong order.  Did you not hear that part?  Were you too busy staring at her boobs perhaps?  Or do you maybe just want to go and commit suicide?  By all means, go ahead but I wont be taken down with you."

As she finished speaking, she crossed her arms over her chest and glanced in the direction of Suzaku with her ruby red eyes, wondering what he had to say about the matter.  No matter what either of them said, she was NOT going there alone.  One of them would be forced to have her tag along with them, and the males had no saying in the matter at all.  She could only hope she'd have someone side at least a bit with her argument.  She was royally screwed if they were both just as dumb and stubborn.  If they leave now, I am staying here.  They can have fun in that damn forest.  I will never get out of there if I go there alone.  The thought made her feel a small sting of panic at the pit of her stomach, yet she kept her face without an expression.  She would not let them know about her weakness.

It was one thing to be forced to team up with the two males she didn't know, and did not like the least bit.  And she'd be damned if she would allow them to know her personally.  What right did they have for that?  There was some serious shit going to happen before she would ever consider them close to her.  So far, she was not impressed at all by either one and she knew that the feeling was mutual.  That makes me wonder if we are even going to be able to do this as a team.  How did one work with another person without liking or trusting them?

The look cast by his superior did not go unnoticed nor unheeded. While the boy could feel the starts of a sigh welling up in the back of his throat, he promptly swallowed it. This was the woman who signed his paychecks, so to speak. Being stubborn and insubordinate while in her presence was not a wise move. No, he needed to play the game and show at least some semblance of respect. Bearing that thought in mind, the youth brought his hand up to the lit cigarette, withdrawing it from his mouth between his index and thumb. His right foot would move slowly up word, lifting from the earth as he maintained perfect balance on his left, his weight shifting subtly and gracefully as he angled his knee outward, bringing the sandal clad plantar surface around to vaguely face in his general direction. Moving his hand down, and with it the cigarette, he'd grind the end against the bottom of his foot, easily extinguishing the contained flame at the lit end. This caused the body of the entire death-stick to bend ever so slightly yet far from being unusable. Once finished, he'd bring his foot down before bringing the unlit cigarette back up to his mouth, replacing the filtered end between his thin lips, simply letting it hang there in an idle fashion as he listened to the woman's impromptu orientation; the speech serving as a rather romanticized greeting and a brief yet discrete set of instructions pertaining to their newly appointed task.

Suzaku once again felt the urge to sigh. In truth it all sounded rather bothersome, and he had no real desire to tread into any place that the word "Death" as part of its name. I don't suppose it's called "The Forest of Death" because it's filled with kittens and puppies. A sardonic chuckle resonated from the base of his throat, even as he felt their new sensei ushering the group inside through the newly opened gate. Once inside Suzaku heard the familiar and foreboding sound of the door behind shut behind them. The boy didn't even need to look to confirm this fact, it was entirely expected on her part. Of course she'd lock the door behind them, taking away any true hope of escaping. No, in her mind the only way the three of them would be leaving was either through accomplishing their current goal or in body bags; and the latter was not even guaranteed if the forest was true to its name.

In the next moment she was gone, or at least Suzaku could only surmise as much given that he no longer heard the sweet tinkle of her wind-chime-like voice. How long would the three go before managing to fall into dispute, he wondered. Without the common enemy that was their new teacher, he didn't expect long. For now he remained silent, his amber hues moving over the landscape, surveying his surroundings to the best of his abilities. He noticed the cage like structure spanned upward and over the forest in a dome type manner which eliminated the chance of one being able to climb over the fence. He could also see that the fence that housed the forest seemed to span in each direction as far as he could see, curving ever so subtly. It wasn't hard for the boy to imagine that the forest's fenced in area was roughly circular, or perhaps spherical was the better word, considering how the fence also stretched upward.

What about below? Suzaku's eyes now moved toward the ground. He doubted that anyone would have bothered to build a fencing structure underground. For Suzaku, the possibility of escape was quite real. He could get out! He could leave these two saps behind and just go home and get drunk and forget about this entire morning. He was feeling rather ill, after all, pain radiating throughout his entire body, a cold sweat now breaking out over his sun-kissed skin. Even his breathing was somewhat heavy at this point and he didn't doubt that he probably appeared a bit paler than usual to anyone who truly paid attention; not that either one of these two would notice. Well maybe Masamori might, he always seemed to have this infuriating habit of butting into other peoples' business. The thought caused Suzaku to scowl ever so slightly. Now's not the time for that, Suzaku. You've got a bigger issue to deal with. You can't simply leave them behind, no matter how much you may dislike them. That inner voice that served as both his conscience and a mental authority figure brought Suzaku's thoughts back to his current situation.

“If we go our separate ways, and then rendezvous back here in an hour or so, we can cover more ground and with some luck, find at least a single scroll if not more. Obviously if someone is in danger, we will need some sort of signal to know that they require our help, but then using a jutsu as a flare should do the trick” Suzaku had missed the first part of what Masamori had been saying, being too lost in his own head, but he had definitely heard that and what the older male had proposed made Suzaku mentally squirm. No. He didn't like that idea in the least. He wasn't quick to object though, knowing that one's knee-jerk reaction to suggestions was often not the right one. He needed to think about it, he needed some time to process the situation and Masamori's proposed solution. He was granted that time, luckily as Satsune seemed quick to jump into the conversation, eager to give her input.

"What?  Are you fucking kidding me?" That seemed about right. As expected from someone like Satsune. Suzaku still made no attempt to jump in, no attempt to shield his former friend from the female's berating words and matching tone. Even more insane than that crazy bitch Hokage." She had a point. He had already thought as much before even stepping foot into this Gods forsaken place. His eyes now moved from the ground toward the two of them, watching with the interaction with a slightly intrigued expression, his lips tightening ever so slightly around the end of the cigarette that still hung from his mouth; the unlit death-stick that was now begging Suzaku for an open flame.

By all means, go ahead but I wont be taken down with you." Suzaku found himself fiddling with his lighter at this point, his fingers running over the metallic body as he weighed the pros and cons of whether he wanted to attempt relighting his smoke. In the end he decided against it, his hand sliding out of his front pant pocket.

"She's right, y'know. Splitting up as a terrible idea."

He'd finally speak, his tone soft and almost carefree despite the rather bleak situation.

"We're in an unfamiliar place that is most likely filled with not-so-nice things and on top of that we're essentially searching for bombs - very touchy bombs that seem to have a preference in the order in which they are moved. The last thing any of us wants is to go setting them off because we were too gung-ho about rushing forward, nor do I think any of us want to be turned into something's breakfast."

As he spoke he found himself sinking into a crouching position, his eyes still on the two as he rested on his haunches. Why was he already so tired?

"I agree with Satsune, we should stay together, but I know you've spent the last two years on your own Masamori. If there's anyone out of the three of us that could survive in here, I have no doubt it would be you so if you truly feel like you'd be better off alone..."

He'd pause for a moment, his eyes now moving from his male companion to the lone female of the team.

"...Satsune and I can work together to search for the scrolls. I only ask that if you find one that you try to figure out which number it is before you try grabbing it."

It was true that Suzaku didn't like the idea of Masamori splitting from the group, but he was confident in the Yuki's ability to survive. He had done so for two years all by himself, traveling the world and growing both stronger and wiser in the process. While Suzaku didn't know much about Satsune's past experiences in the last two years, he could tell that she didn't want to be left alone in this Hellish forest, a sentiment that Suzaku could appreciate and even agree with. Masamori would be fine on his own. At least that's what the raven-haired boy kept telling himself. The last thing he wanted was to hold the taller male back if he truly thought he'd be more efficient on his own. Though it may have seemed callous, the reasoning was sound and the decision made out of respect for both Masamori's wishes and assumed skill. He'd take a moment to fall silent, seemingly allowing the two to voice their opinion, yet not seeming to listen at all as his gaze drifted back toward the ground, a momentary look of malaise passing over his features.

With a small grunt he'd pull himself back up to his full height, stretching a bit before moving his right hand up toward his cheek, letting his fingers lightly run over the scabbed over wound that Satsune had inflicted upon him the other day. His eyes would narrow slightly as he once again seemed to get lost in thought.

"Satsune..."

His eyes would snap in her direction once more, seeming to undulate between an unfocused gaze and a determined stare. His eyes would fixate upon her form, upon her face as though what he was about to say something of dire importance. A few beats of silence would pass between the two of them before he'd finally open his mouth to speak.

"...Do you have a pen and paper?"

He figured that if anyone had something to write with it would be her. He had seen her during their academy days, watched her from time to time due to the fact that she had always seemed to watch him from afar for whatever reason. It hadn't escaped his notice nor memory that she had had a tendency to doodle. No. Not doodle. Doodling implied that it was little more than a hobby or an activity to pass the time. Her drawings were magnificent, he had seen them, and even from across the room or training field he could easily tell they were quality pieces of work created with the utmost care and attention to detail. For her, it was a passion. They were drawings and painting that could be likened to the masterpieces one expected to see hanging in the estates of Konoha's elite.

Suzaku began to make his way toward the girl, holding a hand out expectantly. His eyes still fixated on her face in a seemingly awkwardly intense stare. Despite the look in his eyes though, a thin smile seemed to grace his lips, the cigarette slowly rolling to the corner of his mouth. It was almost as if the whole incident in the restaurant had never happened, or that he had somehow managed to put it all behind him despite the very noticeable scab on his face that would most likely leave a scar to serve as an ever constant reminder of that unpleasant evening.

"I want to make a map of the area as we travel. If we are searching we should do so in an organized fashion so we don't end up accidentally retracing our steps and wasting time and energy. Also...we should think about setting up a safe place to rest before it gets dark. There's no light out here aside from the sun. Once that goes down we'll be wandering blind. Luckily the Hokage never specified a time limit for this little activity so we can take all the time we need and proceed cautiously. There's no need to rush this. It's not worth any of us losing our lives over a stupid scavenger hunt, after all."

Another pause would follow. His eyes now shifting away from his female team member, his gaze now affixed to the forest before them.

"Masamori... if you do go alone though, be very careful. If our Hokage is the type of woman to send three children into a place like this and have them deal with potentially fatal scrolls, I don't think she'd be above picking off members who strayed from the group to prove a point. I don't know if she'd outright kill you, as that seems contradictory to what she said about wanting to pass knowledge and all that crap about us being the future of this village, but I have no doubt that she'd try to injure you greatly. Remember, she's out there somewhere. She could even be watching us now..."

His eyes would move back toward Satsune, as much as he wanted to try to search the treeline for any signs of their teacher, he knew that his current task of mapping out the area around them was the wiser choice. If she wanted to take them out she would have struck already while they were establishing their game plan. If the true goal of this exercise was to stress the idea of teamwork then attacking the three while they were making a genuine effort to work on their communication and ability to operate as a unit would be counter productive. There would be plenty of time for the "trial-by-fire" method later.

Masamori was not surprised to hear that neither Satsune nor Suzaku approved of his plan. He had anticipated as much, though was uncertain what reasons the two would give and those were the things that he was most curious about. The girl went down a fairly predictable route, trying her best to insult him though his face was impassive and he presented practically no emotional reaction; instead Masamori donned the general impression of being completely unimpressed. Let her talk, he thought to himself, letting his ears expertly filter all the crap that came out of her mouth. His academy days had been filled with Satsune’s rants and outbursts, and although most of them were directed at others, it was practically impossible to completely dodge the bullet when her voice carried throughout the whole damn building. The Yuki had developed a great talent for avoiding and ignoring the girl back in those days, being less and less on her receiving days, as graduation came knocking. Well, so much for that now. Still, he was used to her being like this and seeing that kind of reaction only told him that she had not grown up at all since back then.

“So you’re scared” he summarised simply, knowing that the words would carry so much more bite, than his innocent and calm voice could possibly hide. “The reason why I wanted to split up, as I explained, was to cover more ground. We find the scrolls, we don’t pick them up unless the one you find is numbered ‘one’ and return to meet with the group, to report on anything you have seen, scrolls included. That way, we can go back for the ones we have located and pick them up in the right order” he explained calmly, though his voice allowed a glimpse of annoyance to show in his tone. The plan wasn’t so hard to understand. “If anything, the monsters that you anticipate are in here, are more likely to come out at night then now, when it’s still relatively early” he added, partially because he wanted to scare the girl, but also partially because he wanted to drive the point home that splitting up now would be far better than doing so later. In fact, splitting up later, when the sun was no longer in the sky was not an option at all. The youth chuckled at the comment regarding the Hokage’s chest. He had spent the entire time with the woman trying very hard to avoid her face, forget the rest of her. Still, it was funny to see where Satsune’s priorities lay.

Then, Suzaku spoke up. It seemed like he too missed the point of Masamori’s plan. The Yuki didn’t want to split up the group completely, he only wanted to cover more ground and do some basic scouting, before returning to their starting point. As he had outlined, he hoped to find at least one scroll in that first hour, a task which would be much hard if the group moved together. And of course he wasn’t going to pick up any old scroll. Though he personally didn’t believe that the Hokage had really told the truth when it came to these apparently decisively lethal explosives, he wasn’t exactly going to test that theory either. Still, it was frustrating to feel that neither of his teammates understood what he had wanted to achieve. He had expected Suzaku to at least do so.

Masamori didn’t reply to Suzaku’s comment about his survival skills. The Yuki wasn’t so sure he could manage to brave the Forest on his own. Sure, maybe he had some worldly experience behind his belt, but there were still things that he needed to rely on, like a teammate watching over him sleeping, so that nothing crept up on him when he was at his weakest. He did smile a little at the compliment, though wasn't certain that's what it was intended to be.

Suzaku seemed to have a plan of his own, or maybe he had made up an excuse to get closer to Satsune, for he certainly moved quite near to her and looked ever so intently upon the girl. Not that Masamori thought much of it. He merely interpreted this as Suzaku standing up for himself – making a statement. Maybe he felt that he had looked weak in front of the girl when they had first met in the Electric Dish. If that was the case, then he had managed to make a stronger impression quite well.

The map idea was... an okay thought, though Masamori could pick faults with it. Without a clear sense of where they were, trying to draw out an area seemed rather a pointless venture. Once inside the forest, it would be hard to gauge where they had started from, and should a monster or monsters get in their way, any sense of direction they previously had, would be instantly lost due to the scuffle that would likely follow with the animals. The notion of establishing a safe place was a much better idea however, though the Yuki had figured that hugging the gate and the fence was probably their safest bet. After all, wouldn’t the monsters have been ‘taught’ to stay away from the entrance?

And then came the last point. It seemed that Masamori’s plan was interpreted as his desire to go at this task alone. A part of him did want to do so, but then the Yuki wasn’t so sure if that was the best idea. For starters, he would have to find his teammates eventually and without any real means of doing so, that could take far longer than he would have liked, especially considering that the Yuki was incapable of producing his own light source; that meant that travelling at night would be more the so perilous if he was on his own, with finding the two teammates made more the so impossible. On the other hand, he was certain that he could cover more ground and by doing so, cut down the time they were to spend here. He hadn’t expected or planned for a long team session, and if they weren’t quick and diligent about this task, they could be stuck here for days. And the longer they spent here, the more of their time would they have to commit to surviving rather than to looking for scrolls. He wasn’t too keen on monster meat either.

“Look, I will scout ahead okay? Try to go in as straight a line as possible, so that I can find you eventually once I have taken a good look around. Maybe mark a few trees to make it easier on me” he told them, smiling reassuringly. “If I’m in trouble, I will definitely let you know. Look out for explosions or jutsu flying in the air” he added, jokingly, though there was seriousness hidden behind those seemingly carefree words. Deciding that was about all he had to say, or could muster himself to speak, he clapped Suzaku on the shoulder and, after giving Satsune a wary, threatening look of “Don’t hurt my friend whilst I’m gone”, he ran towards the nearest tree and launched himself from the ground, leaping on to the nearest branch. From then on, he continued to jump higher and higher until he eventually reached the very top. The dome was not so far above him.

From here, everything was ant-like. His grey eyes did their best to scout the area in front of him, but he couldn’t see as much as he would have liked. The forest was, despite its name, a forest with ridiculously high and thick trees, and as such, areas of darkness and shade. All he could see from here was a small pond, and a cave nearby. Those didn’t seem like places where the scrolls could be. There was no sign of monsters, which made him more afraid than the sight of them could ever have. An unknown enemy was the worst enemy. Sighing to himself, he began to move east. He noted, mentally, where the general direction of the entrance was. He could always just move by the fence until he found it.

“So you’re scared”

Satsune couldn't help but smirk but refrained from commenting on what the male was saying.  Think what you want Snowflake, if you view me as a weak female I'll have an even easier time of making your life miserable later on.  Go ahead and think that I am scared of these little monsters in this forest.  You'll never get to know the truth behind why I feel so strongly towards not parting up.  After all, she was not the least bit scared of what could be hidden within that forest.  But she was not about to let that boasting idiot know that.  What she truly felt uncomfortable about, and yes perhaps had some fear towards, was the idea of getting lost.  Satsune knew that she would not have much of a survival chance if she got left alone inside that forest, as she'd never be able to make her way out of there again.  Perhaps with the help of her clan jutsu she could do it, but wasting any time in a place like that could be your death sentence at any given minute.  She'd most likely starve or die from dehydration before anything else, as Satsune was pretty confident she could protect herself from attacking predators.

If the Yuki wanted to split up, she'd simply wait until he'd need help with something, and at that moment she'd watch closely as he would have to help himself.  If he would be able to.  The idea of stalking behind him just to be able to watch his final moments was actually starting to sound very tempting.  The boy whom she so dearly liked to call Snowflake kept on yapping, probably loving the sound of his own voice, and it only made her feel like an annoying fly was buzzing near her ears.  So he had his own plan figured out and was so damn sure he was right; then he could go ahead and execute that plan.  She didn't give a shit.  If he'd just shut up already and leave, then she would be happy.  If Suzaku would agree with what the Yuki was saying and go his own way as well then Satsune was going home, it was that simple.  There was no reason for her to go in there alone and either get lost for years or be blown up by a psychotic Hokage.  The raven haired female waited to see what her other team member had to say, and was fully prepared to have to argue with him as he'd start backing up Snowflake.

Satsune of course didn't think for a second that either one of them would decide to agree with her.  And especially not Suzaku whom seemed to dislike her even more than the Yuki did.

"She's right, y'know. Splitting up is a terrible idea."

I would have expected my death sooner than him ever agreeing with me.

She was.. well stunned into silence.  Satsune had no doubts that Suzaku still held a grudge after what had happened during their encounter at the restaurant the other day.  She felt completely innocent from what had happened (indeed it had been him that decided to be drunk that day), but she couldn't help but wonder if he was plotting something as a revenge. If he has any sense he'll just let it go.  It wasn't that big of a deal anyway.  There probably wasn't even going to be a scar on him, so why would he be complaining?

"...Satsune and I can work together to search for the scrolls. I only ask that if you find one that you try to figure out which number it is before you try grabbing it."

Suzaku turned his amber eyes to her, and he would probably not miss the surprised and then very suspicious look that crossed her delicate features.  With her keen eyes, she had not missed the small movement as he ran his hand against the slight scabbing on his cheek.  The reminder of the 'incident'.  That only strengthened her suspicion of him holding onto the grudge.

What?  Just what?  He wants to be alone with me?  I knew it. He's gonna do something.  That bastard thinks he can take me out while we are on this little task.  He thinks he can just kill me and bury me somewhere deep within the forest.  If he'd even bother to bury me.  I will have to make sure never to turn my back on him.

Her hand grasped onto the hilt of her katana as she kept watching him with a searching gaze, wondering just how long he'd wait until he would make his move.  Her thumb caressed lightly the sturdy material of the katana's hilt, and her blood red eyes went from one male to the other; as she wondered why they didn't just team up and attack her that way.   It'd be much easier, but perhaps the black haired male wanted the revenge to be more personal.  He'd probably want to take all the glory for himself.  So immersed was she in her own thoughts about what could possibly happen, that the female actually jumped a bit in the air as she heard Suzaku say her name.

"Satsune..."

"What?"

She immediately snapped back at him, sounding and looking like a cornered and ferocious wolf.  A little bit of a silence passed, before he finally continued the sentence.

"...Do you have a pen and paper?"

And again her face almost dropped to the ground.  A pen and a paper?  Why the heck was he asking about something as mundane as that?  Was he going to attack or not?!

"Oh...uh.. yeah."

She was so confused by now that she almost forgot where she kept all her stuff.  But soon enough she was rummaging through her kit and (while also watching him closely as he approached) she also found some paper for him.  He was staring at her as he approached, making her feel rather on the edge, and then if her quick glance hadn't deceived her, a tiny smile had appeared on his mouth.  Don't even try to fool me.  Without commenting, as she felt rather stupid already for reacting so strongly, she handed him the things he needed and listened to what more he had to say.  Making a map sounded like a pretty strong move, as long as he wouldn't expect her to read it.  Despite all of her effort through the years, Satsune had never managed to figure out any directions and most certainly could not read a map.  Not even when her life depended on it.  She was sure he'd be fine with controlling the map, weren't males always so proud of their maps?  She'd simply take on the part of scouting and let him do the rest.

Satsune had to admit that she liked his way of thinking, to take things rather slowly and carefully.  That way they could probably avoid most of the trouble.  She didn't feel excited towards the idea of having to run through the forest and search frantically while getting dirty and sweaty.  So even if the male was probably plotting her death, she would keep agreeing with him.  At least for now.  Her ruby orbs turned towards the other male as he spoke out again, and then left Satsune and Suzaku alone.

“If I’m in trouble, I will definitely let you know. Look out for explosions or jutsu flying in the air”

Satsune smiled sweetly and dangerously while watching him go.  Sure, she would watch out if something was wrong and he would try to alert them.  And she'd promptly -ignore- that sign.  He was pissing her off more than usually, coming up with a stupid plan and then deciding to go ahead on his own.  It was never a good idea to leave your group when you were in a strange territory and might be also hunted down by your own sensei.  ...A deranged sensei with explosives.

"Well if he had asked, I could have perhaps offered some scouting assistance.  But then again... I probably wouldn't have.  Fuck that bastard."

She shrugged and started pulling out a brush, small scroll and an ink capsule while she let Suzaku busy himself with that map.  The female kneeled down on the ground and spread out the small scroll before dipping the brush into the ink.  With expert skill she quickly drew 14 mice on the paper, before she focused a small amount of Chakra into the creations.  As quickly as she had painted them onto the white scroll, the mice sprung to 'life' and scattered in all directions while disappearing into the woods.  Satsune kept her position on the ground, her eyes were closed as she was 'experiencing' what the mice were experiencing and on her face was a focused expression.  This was probably the most peaceful moment Suzaku would get when near her.

The minutes dragged on, one by one the mice were killed by random things.  Each time the female couldn't help but flinch just a little bit, but she kept her focus on the others that lived.  The numbers were quickly pulled down until just two were left; but finally, Satsune suddenly opened her eyes and got up while gathering her things.  It was done, the last mice had gotten killed, but she had also gained some useful information from that last mouse before a snake had gobbled it up.

"Found a scroll."

She walked towards Suzaku, glanced him over one more time with slight suspicion; before taking the pen from his hand and quickly drawing down onto the map the path the mouse had taken from where they were standing.  She had to do this right at that moment before she'd forget.  She was trying hard not to be bothered by how close they were standing to each other as she finished scribbling down on the paper, before handing him the pen back.  So far, Suzaku hadn't tried anything fishy, and it made her wonder if perhaps he wanted to wait until he had used up all the help she had to offer.  Maybe he'd wait until they were almost at the end of their task, hoping to catch her then as she'd be tired and off guard.  Not going to happen.

"The other mice were killed too quickly for me to really use their information well.  I also can't say for sure that the path this mouse went is completely safe, but we at least know the estimated whereabouts for this scroll."

She was making a bit of an effort to sound ... well more calm and gentle than normally.  They needed to try and work together on this thing, and Satsune had been told often enough that people didn't like working with those that treated them like underlings.  But her tone was still a little bit harsh as she felt a bit ... on the edge while being alone with him.  Not only did it feel weirdly awkward, but it didn't help that she was expecting him to try and stab her at any given moment.

Suzaku paused, sensing the annoyance in Masamori's voice. There was no real need for that, was there? Suzaku despite feeling utterly miserable both emotionally and physically, still managed to put on a smile for their sake. It was no secret that both Masamori nor Satsune were his favorite people to be around, yet he tried to make it all tolerable. He already had come to the realization that team work here was essential. One of Suzaku's limited strength had no real hope of surviving this ordeal alone. He needed Masamori and Satsune as much as they probably needed him. He'd nod though, biting his tongue as he did so. He decided not to point out that he had known all that Masamori had said, known and disregarded in lieu of safety. Breaking the group up was just a bad idea. Even if Masamori's strategy helped them cover more ground and potentially lessened the time that it would take them to find their objectives, it exposed the group to undue danger in the face of too many unknown variables. The mission parameters didn't call for speed and swiftness, they called for caution and strategy. There was no time line and as such this was not a time sensitive task. All these thoughts and more went through the raven-haired boy's head but did not translate into speech as the boy kept his teeth firmly pressed against the tender oral muscle that was just dying to participate in the formation of the syllables that would have explained his own rationale to the annoyed Yuki.

"Alright then."

It was all Suzaku said as he took the paper and pen from Satsune, a pleasant smile still on his face as he did so, his tone still carrying that carefree character all in the interest of lightening the mood and making this all more bearable for the three of them. No need for the entire time to be at each others' throats. Once he had the items in hand he'd turn, heading a few feet away from Satsune before crouching down toward the ground, his eyes surveying the area carefully before glancing toward the paper and penning a rough schematic like drawing of what he could see. It was nothing fancy or professional looking, but it was better than nothing. He drew the curved border that served as the fenced in area that he could see, circling the area where they were currently, signaling to any who looked upon his creation that this was the "entrance". As he performed this task, Suzaku would listen as Masamori stated that he was going to scout ahead, reassuring the two of them that he'd let them know if he encountered any trouble through the use of a jutsu fired toward the sky. Suzaku nodded absently, obviously very focused on his own task at the moment. He could only hope that if such an occasion arose that either him or Satsune would be able to see the signal through the dense canopy that hung overhead.

"Good luck and be careful."

The boy's words came out in a low and relaxed tone, almost as if he were in some sort of trance. Of course he'd miss the silent exchange between Masamori and Satsune; the Yuki giving the girl a warning glance and the girl seemingly shrugging it off while simultaneously taking a sadistic delight in the fact that Masamori was heading into a seemingly dangerous situation. It was only after Masamori had left that Suzaku finally managed to pull his attention away from his map-making, his eyes now on Satsune as he heard her speak. "Well if he had asked, I could have perhaps offered some scouting assistance.  But then again... I probably wouldn't have.  Fuck that bastard."

What is she talking about? Suzaku was left wondering to himself as he watched her withdraw her iconic paper and brush. Suzaku had seen her do such before back in their academy days, but what happened next was something the boy would have never expected in his wildest dreams. Once she had finished her artwork in what seemed like three seconds flat, the drawing seemed to spring to life, spawning shapes and creatures that looked vaguely like rats, though Suzaku did not feel safe calling them as such due to the unnatural manner in which they had been brought into existence.

"Well that's new..."

He'd find himself muttering, his voice betraying his surprise. It wasn't until Satsune finally opened her eyes and mentioned that she already managed to find a scroll that Suzaku finally spoke again.

"The number?"

Satsune didn't seem to answer, rather moving toward him and grabbing the pen after a moment's hesitation, quickly marking on the makeshift map the relative area in which she thought the scroll lay. Upon seeing the map it would probably be obvious to her that his drawing was being done in chunks, only putting down on the paper that which he knew. Most of it remained blank and the area she circled would also remain blank aside from the mark she made. He'd take a moment to look over the page before nodding. "The other mice were killed too quickly.  I also can't say for sure that the path the mouse went is completely safe, but we at least know the estimated whereabouts for this scroll."

"I understand... Good work. I've never seen anything like that before. I'm impressed."

A genuine compliment tossed in a nonchalant manner as though it were an every day occurrence. He'd seem to zone out again, his gaze becoming unfocused as though he had drifted off to another place only to come back with a slight grimace. Pain radiated throughout his entire body, his muscles contracted in response, causing him to seem momentarily tense before he'd quickly shake it off, seeming to return to the moment.

"Alright so...."

He'd begin, his eyes on the map rather than her face as he spoke. That wouldn't last though as his eyes eventually drifted up toward her face, staring down at her with the same intense stare that he had held moments ago when he had asked her for the pen and paper.

"...I'm thinking that we'll go check out that scroll you found. It's the best we have at the moment. I figure that I'll take lead and you watch my back, assuming that you don't carry that bow for show."

He'd make a slight nodding motion toward the bow she had slung across her body, still maintaining a slight smile as he spoke. He knew that it would probably seem a bit strange to her that he'd so voluntarily take the lead, leaving his back entirely exposed to her. The two had no reason to trust one another and several reasons to mistrust. Still, Suzaku wasn't about to let that interfere with the task at hand and he had no interest in arguing with her about who was going to stand in front of who and who was going to leave their back exposed.

"My eyes are pretty good, but I don't have a bow, so I'd be better used up front so I could spot any incoming danger."

He'd quickly reason, figuring that she might need a little push to agree with what he was saying. He had seen the way she had looked at him earlier, the way she had reacted and how her hand had drifted toward her weapon when he had approached. It didn't take a genius to realize that she was suspicious of him at best, most likely paranoid that he was vindictive ass hole waiting to jump her when she least expected in order to repay her for the wound she had inflicted upon him the other night. He had no real way to convince her otherwise. He knew there was nothing he could say that she'd believe. He'd have to simply convince her through his actions. Hopefully she'd realize that such a trivial matter, while still bothersome, meant nothing in a potentially life or death situation such as this. He was sure she did realize that on some level. Suzaku was nothing if not a bit too trusting for his own good, especially when it came to people whom he was supposed to rely on.

"Does that sound alright to you?"

He'd ask after a moment, his tone almost a bit too gentle and too relaxed when one considered their circumstances. He'd reach forward slowly in an attempt to take the pen back from her, knowing that he'd need it to map out the area as they walked. If she agreed he'd simply nod before turning around, motioning her to follow as he headed off in the direction in which she had indicated with the map, no sign of worry or concern in his step as he ventured forth, as if the fact that it was Satsune watching his back was perfectly fine with him. In truth the thought terrified him, but he'd do well not to let that show. It was the best option he could come up with, after all.

As the Hokage softly landed on a tree branch elevated high from the forest floor, having used her new cat-like agility granted from the jutsu she had used beforehand to get her up here, she grasped loosely onto the tree trunk beside her. To put into perspective how high she was from the ground, the tree (which was positioned directly in the centre of the forest) was very close to brushing the top of the high domed fence covering the whole forest. Up here, she was concealed due to the thick branches that grew all the way to the top of the tree, and she had a perfect birds-eye view over her students. To keep this jutsu active it didn’t take too much effort on her part, and she realised the necessity of it in this situation. Her eyesight, hearing and sense of smell were all heightened to superhuman levels in this form, plus her speed, strength and acrobatic skills were enhanced to the point where she felt confident about getting anywhere in the forest with little effort… but still in good time. While she had told each of her new students that they would be going this ordeal alone, it was far from that. And she was more than aware of how they must think about her regarding this task of theirs. Of course it pained her to start things off in this way, but sometimes drastic circumstances called for drastic measures to make things work. She would much rather have a successful trial for her new students, like this one, instead of having an utterly failed (basically elementary) task due to the background of each specific student. They needed this push, much more than they most probably assumed. She remained poised on the tree branch, looking down on proceedings with wide amber, very feline and almost feral eyes, drinking in all of her surroundings and quickly spotting the whereabouts of her students.

To say that she was dismayed that they had already broken off into two ‘groups’ was an understatement. Her mouth pulled down into a very firm scowl of sorts as she watched the movements of the former trio; now a separate individual and duo. She wasn’t particularly surprised by who had paired with who (or rather, who hadn’t paired up with anyone), noting that Suzaku and Satsune were the pairing and Masamori was the lone wolf. She thought about how Suzaku was still a recently graduated Genin, and he would undoubtedly feel nervy about approaching this kind of situation alone. In fact, she was rather sure that he would have insisted they all stay together as a group. Satsune, the only girl in the little team, would most probably have paired with Suzaku due to self-preservation. In these situations, it was most commonly seen that people had one of two reactions; go it alone, or group together for safety. Of course there were pros and cons in each situation, but the whole point of this exercise, as Kimiko had made an elicit comment about, was to work together. It was a fundamental skill that every shinobi needed in order to survive in their life, especially as village ninja, because they would always be placed on teams. If you weren’t compliant in a team, you would become shunned and nobody would come to your aid if you were caught unaware by something. The ebony-haired woman witnessed the teamwork shown by the small pairing, of how some kind of strange technique was used to… send little mice out into the forest for a wider range exploration. Good thinking. While it became obvious that the creatures in the forest were more than a match for the strange mice that had been… painted, it appeared, the girl that had used the technique seemed satisfied about the results of her strategy. The pair continued to converse, and it seemed that Suzaku was actually giving direction, judging by his movements and gestures, following something that Satsune had told him. Her feline ears twitched madly atop her head as she tried to strain to hear what exactly was being said, but above the din of the very noisy forest (which would be eerily quiet to most), she found it very difficult indeed to pinpoint their voices specifically. After double-checking that the dark-haired pair were safe and on the right path, she turned her attention to the obvious… exception of the group, Masamori.

He had leapt up to the highest point (excluding where Kimiko was currently hidden, partially due to the fur patterning camouflaging her in the tree which had specifically thick branches) to survey things from afar, which was a smart move. But not one that his sensei particularly agreed with. If she had simply given them the exercise to retrieve the scrolls, without putting emphasis on the teamwork aspect, then she would have appreciated his decision more. Having surveyed the forest, he started moving away again, and the Hokage monitored his movements very closely. To her estimate, which was spookily accurate due to how well she knew this forest, he was heading in the direction of the Second Scroll that she had hidden. On a lower canopy level, he would possibly stumble upon a scroll dangling down in the midst, above which were four medium-sized hornets nests. If anyone would pull at the rope whatsoever, it would knock a large rock which was dangling amongst the nests and thus jostle each one. The creatures that resided within the nests were… particularly feisty as well. Easily provoked. And, like everything else in this forest, super-sized. While she wasn’t happy with the youth’s choice to separate from the group, she would rather the forest teach him a lesson instead of her. She would never let any one of the kids die, of that she was certain and felt confident in her abilities to preserve all of their lives. It was more of the… shock treatment she was going for. The realisation that ‘Oh damn, we could die here… maybe we should do what she says’.

Apparently not.

As for the scroll that Suzaku and Satsune were approaching, it was most definitely the Third Scroll, made obvious due to where the mouse had retreated from when Kimiko had been watching. Things would most certainly start… burning up in this forest. Especially since the snake (which was very disappointed by its meal being tasteless ink) that had snapped at the Genin girl's mice was now heading straight for a not-so familiar scent, something it had been craving for a long time; fresh meat. It hissed loudly as it approached, raising its head up from the ground where it was slithering to spot two dark-haired children heading across its path. And meanwhile, where Masamori was venturing, a huge and multi-feathered creature launched itself through the treetops headed straight for him, squawking loudly with its huge beak gaping open in readiness.

Dire Consequences: Team 2 and their Test [C] [Chris, PolarBear, TOPKite] Vide
PostSubject: Re: Dire Consequences: Team 2 and their Test [C] [Chris, PolarBear, TOPKite] Dire Consequences: Team 2 and their Test [C] [Chris, PolarBear, TOPKite] EmptyThu 06 Mar 2014, 12:15 am

Masamori had soon lost track of time. He had proceeded to utilise the high ground, moving from tree, from branch to branch, always on the lookout, wary of attack by unknown creatures. His eyes dashed around left and right, and back and forward, trying to locate a scroll or an ‘obvious location’ where one might be found. But he found no such place and it disheartened him to think that the task wasn’t going to be as easy as he would have liked. It was likely that it would take the trio some sizeable time to find the scrolls. In the worst case scenario, they would have to sleep here. He did not like the prospect.

Although some short amount of time elapsed since the team had split up, already he felt as if he had spent hours in the forest. There was something psychologically unsettling about this place. Maybe it was the odd similarity of every branch and bark, and the familiar shade under which one always travelled due to the height of the trees and the dome, both of which obscured the sun’s light. Though the youth had been fortunate not to encounter any monsters thus far, he was forced to move lower and lower down, though he still kept to the branches, as the trees became increasingly thick and it was harder and harder for him to see what surprises the ground held. The one minus of this was that he could no longer see what dangers the air held. And in that moment of ignorance, was when the danger decided to show its ugly head.

The squawk, the original warning sound, was a distant affair. Whatever its source, Masamori had began his descent by then and had no need of fearing what sounded like a giant bird. Well, that’s what he believed anyway. With branches around him, he felt safe, his eyes turning their attention more so to the ground. But, the youth was completely unaware of the fact that the shrieking creature had located its prey – him that is – and had shadowed him carefully. Its eyes were far more powerful than his, and those wild irises pierced the canvas of leaves and wood to locate their target with an expert ease. Still he was safe, for the time being at least, blissfully unaware of the danger he was in. That is, until he reached a momentary clearing in the forest.

The suddenness with which the creature appeared had caused the youth to stop less quickly than would have been ideal. Before him, hovered a bird-like monstrosity, multi-coloured and yet artistically disfigured, with red crashing awkwardly with the blue and the purple, whilst green mingled with orange and yellow. The thing had wild, white eyes that followed him with a terrifying intensity. Its beak was huge and scarred, jagged and cracked in places, where it had faced off with other monsters and won. In fact, the whole creature was scarred and hideous, missing a claw here and many feathers there. If it was a bird once, it had lost all of its charm, having given itself away to madness and carnivorous hunger.

Masamori took evasive action as soon as he could, and that was not too soon, for it shrieked once more – the sound was so close to him this time and so ear-shattering, that he was afraid his skull would be decimated by the sheer power of it – and proceeded to peck at him. But from his perspective, and the ‘bird’ being huge, the sight was more akin to a wrecking ball coming dangerously fast in his direction. The youth darted upwards, dodging the beak narrowly, watching the branches below him get dashed aside with the ease a human dashes aside leaves. Then the bird proceeded to lunge again, and this time the youth went the other way, dropping fully to the ground. During his fall, he had fumbled for a kunai and an explosive tag, and by the time he had dropped ‘safely’ to the ground, those two items had been combined. Before he could make use of this device however, the bird clawed at him, now landing beside the little ant. He jumped back, missing its misshaped talons by inches. At this failure, it stomped angrily and tried to peck again. But the youth had moved further into the forest, using the trees as cover. The bird tore through trees with ease, and yet they slowed it down considerably. The youth was grateful for that much intervention from the forest.

As the bird became more slowed down, so did the Yuki become braver.  He placed the explosive kunai back into his kit, and instead decided to damage the beast to the best of his ability with his spear. That of course went rather poorly. He found quickly that it was too dangerous and rather impossible to cause damage to the claws or the beak – they both had taken damage from much greater and stronger things than his spear, and had survived. The fleshy part of the creature was too well guarded, for the monster had great instincts and was always following the Yuki’s movement.

In fact it was that very intensity with which the monster’s eyes followed the boy that resulted in his idea. Hiding momentarily behind a tree, the youth’s hands darted through some very simple seals and within a second, two others of his exact appearance stood next to him, uneager to perform the task he had set out for them. Still, the two Masamoris dashed from behind the tree, each in different directions; the bird was thoroughly confused, and the original used that to his advantage by climbing the very tree he had hid behind in the meanwhile. With the creature deciding to follow the clone that had moved to the right, the youth followed quickly, spear in hand, trying to time his attack as best as he could.

Finally, it seemed the bird had trapped the young ninja. It seemed to arc its head back in triumph, its eyes bloodshot and excited, lingering, tasting the moment of victory. Then, with a heavy and hammer-like blow, the beak (that might as well have been made of steel) crashed into the ground where the boy was stood, obliterating the earth and the flesh? under it. But there was no blood or flesh. The flesh and blood was in the air, completely ordered, unaffected by this deadly act. With a spear brandished in both of his hands, the youth fell from the tree, fell from the sky like an arrow, fast and furious, the steel of the weapon aimed at the bird’s head. With a crunching sound that announced the penetration had been successful, the tip of the lance had, at first, struggled through the flesh, but upon reaching the bone, the crunching and splintering sound seemed to suggest that indeed success had been achieved. The explosion of blood from the wound covered the youth whole. And yet he had enough wits about him to carry on fulfilling his plan. With a swift movement of the hand, he had brandished his explosive-tagged kunai. Dislodging his spear, much to the protest of the now full-in-agony bird, he threw the projectile into the little hole he had made. Blinded partially by the blood, the youth jumped away as best as he could; knowing that time was crucial here and every second could mean his death, should the bird retaliate faster than the youth could traverse the air and locate the nearest branch with his feet, Masamori formed a single seal with his right hand. “Katsu” he muttered, before the bloody, yet somewhat muted explosion occurred.

------

It was hard to tell whether it had been the explosion or bits of the monster that had resulted in Masamori’s impact with a tree, then some branches and finally, unmercifully, the ground. He felt broken, disorientated, highly bruised and was certain some great amount of time had passed. The sounds coming from the carcass of the bird were unsettling at best; he was lucky, regardless, that monsters were scavengers at heart and hunters only when necessity called for such. Fear of shinobi and humans had been erected in them throughout the many years the Forest had been used to train the prior. Perhaps it was also the stink of blood and bird-flesh on him, that made the corpse of the monster more appetising.

The youth made slow progress towards the nearest branch he could find – he figured the high ground provided some temporary comfort. He had no idea how long the encounter had lasted, worse yet, how long he had been out. He was painted red, which made his stomach churn uneasily and his spear was missing, though he was sure he had held it in his hands when the explosion occurred; his kit was by him thankfully. Had Suzaku and Satsune heard the explosion? Had they seen the bird in the sky? Did they think he was dead? He shrugged those thoughts of, seeing as his aching head could not stand for such frustrating ideas to plague him. He looked around bleakly. Nothing particularly big or dangerous had come to benefit in his victory. That was good for him. Still, it was unsafe to stay here... and yet he couldn’t help but watch, half fascinated, half aghast, how his former nemesis’ carcass disappeared under the needy, desperate claws and teeth of what, in comparison to the bird, seemed like mere critters.

He would be moving again soon enough.

"I understand... Good work. I've never seen anything like that before. I'm impressed."

Satsune had started getting ready, using the time to retrieve her bow and a quiver from a scroll, when Suzaku spoke out again.  Her ruby red eyes narrowed a bit, but the female kept quiet.  Why was he paying her random compliments?  Surely he had seen other abilities from other people, and did he compliment them also?  For some reason it annoyed her greatly.  She hated when people were trying to seem nicer than they felt like being, and Satsune -knew- that he didn't like her.  So this whole smiling and complimenting was rather turning her mood to the worse than actually making it lighter.  Sure she was trying to be 'nice' herself, but she didn't go through the trouble of paying compliments.  And smiling?  Fuck that.  All she wanted was to survive, and she already suspected him of having a dirty trick up his sleeve, and that made the 'nice guy' act even more irritating and set her even more on edge.

"...I'm thinking that we'll go check out that scroll you found. It's the best we have at the moment. I figure that I'll take lead and you watch my back, assuming that you don't carry that bow for show."

Satsune nodded, it made sense in a way.  She could watch out for incoming attacks, and plus it was what she would have preferred anyway.  Given both her suspicion towards him, and also her horrible sense of direction.  If she'd set out first, they'd only manage to make a small circle before landing at the same place again.  His reasoning about the fact why he wanted her to be in the back was unneeded, yet she still kept her mouth shut.  Her ruby orbs were however starting to glare a little bit.

"Does that sound alright to you?"

Satsune allowed him to take the pen away from her hand, yet she could not keep her mouth shut any longer.  She had tried, oh boy had she tried to keep silent.  Keep the peace.  Not 'ruffle any feathers', but he was just going too far with pretending to be nice and gentle.  It was making her mind reel with annoyance.  The male would turn around and start walking, and in that moment she would glare holes into his back as her low voice would flow to his ears.  The words were piercing, the contempt and annoyance clear behind each syllable, yet she didn't raise her voice at all.  Just spoke with a loud enough volume to reach him, as Satsune did not feel like attracting any unwanted attention.  Plus, it was very rare for her to raise her voice at all.  The more calm she seemed when angry or trying to piss someone else off, the more it seemed to annoy the other person.  This time however, a very rare occurrence, she wasn't trying to tick Suzaku off or annoy him; but rather speaking in her way too honest words what was on her mind and what would possibly be the cause of their 'team spirit' to break up.

"Sounds just peachy.  Your ideas thus far have nothing wrong with them.  However can you drop this nice guy act?  It sets my alarms off because I know you don't like me the least bit.  So why pretend?  I'm not a weak female who plans to sit down and cry if you are stingy.  Are you perhaps planning on slipping a knife between my ribs when I least expect, and therefore want to butter me up a bit and make me less on the guard?"

She'd pause while she irritatingly moved a branch out of her way, careful not to let the leaves or wood touch her face.  And then she kept talking in that same low voice, not really giving him a chance yet to interrupt.

"Nobody said we would have to be best friends, only that we should work together.  It's good to see that you possess a bit more intelligence than Snowflake there who decided to split up, yet I'd appreciate it if you would show your true colours.  This smiling facade of yours is doing nothing for me.  Except for maybe making it feel more tempting to shoot an arrow at -your- head."

The speaking would stop at that point.  Suzaku would either reply with something, or keep silent.  Either way, Satsune would keep silent and listen or just keep on walking and let him mull over what she had had to say.  Her arm was ready to grab the bow or the katana at any small sign that either the male wanted to attack her for those harsh words, or if an animal (or whatever 'thing' that was lurking around) was about to attack.  Satsune had trained herself to know in what kind of situation each weapon would suit best, but having the opportunity in a real life and death situation made it more tense and difficult.  But it also made it more exciting.

They trampled onwards into the forest, every small sound made Satsune's eyes glance around and she made a good note to keep a good watch for her -own- back.  Yet she was not going to let Suzaku down if anything would come forth from these... filthy bushes that surrounded them.  Satsune had no real 'wish' of hers to save the lives of others, but this was a mission she was on and she was not supposed to fail this mission.  No matter if she would have to drag his almost lifeless body out of there, she -would- return him still breathing back to the sensei.  And with that show that she was worthy of being a ninja, and that she -could- work with others. I hope he's not an idiot that rushes into danger.

The minutes ticket on, the forest seemed endless.  Just how long had they been walking when Satsune was ready to burn down the forest?  She was starting to sweat a little bit, and no matter how much she tried; she couldn't prevent a little bit of dirt starting to colour her boots.  This -sucked-.

"We should be there soon, I think this was about one of the last things I noticed."

By that she meant some of the last things the mouse noticed, but Suzaku should be able to catch the drift.  I'm pretty sure there was a pond...  She traced back into her memories, and then nodded.

"We are searching for a pond."

Just as Satsune started to look curiously around in order to spot the scroll, or just the pond, her head snapped to the side at the sound of an explosion.  She couldn't quite make out how far away it had been, but she knew right away that it had probably been the Yuki of the team.

"That idiot, did he already get in trouble?  I wonder if he managed to blow himself up, wouldn't surprise me.

The sound of explosion wasn't the only thing however that suddenly caught her attention, as at the last second the female darted to the side in order to prevent being bitten by a snake.  As she moved, her hand went into the pouch at her hip and retrieved a shuriken which was quickly thrown at the snake's head in order to prevent it from immediately following her or attacking the male, as Satsune had moved out of the way.  With a curse she both alerted the male whom was travelling with her, in case he hadn't noticed, and also voiced her displeasure; whilst the female pulled out her katana.  This snake was rather large, bigger than any other she had seen, and there was no way of knowing if it was poisonous or not.

"Keep an eye out for more of these fuckers."

She'd move her lithe body, taking a step to the side and attracting the attention of the snake again.

"That's right you prick, come at me."

The creature was probably either starving, or just greedy in general, as it made no real hesitation of what prey to follow.  Rather it decided that the one who moved more and made more sound would be better to snack on first.  With a hiss it moved swiftly, way more swiftly than a normal snake really should, its mouth opening and dangerous piercing fangs appearing into view.  The slick creature lunged forward, its fangs barely missing Satsune's arm as she moved swiftly to the side.  Just as the female moved, she twisted in the spot and did a sudden round house kick; as her foot moved in the air she manipulated a bit inside of the boots with her toes, and out shot a small knife which bit into the flesh of the snake.  The creature made an angry loud hiss as it pulled free from the knife, blood running down its long and slender body.

Satsune got a firm grounding again and glared at her opponent, who in return glared hard at her.  This prey was clearly dangerous, and that only made the snake more hungry and angry.  Already it had been teased with fake food, and now it was fighting with a creature that had manage to injure it.

Another quick lunge was made, Satsune stepped quickly again to the side, but didn't watch her footing; as the snake had used its head as a decoy while moving the tail next to the female's feet.  The raven haired girl stumbled over the tail, and lost her grounding as the snake prepared to bite her in the throat.  With a groan, Satsune painfully twisted herself as she was in the middle of falling to the ground.  Her arm reached behind her into the quiver, grabbing onto one of the arrows; and just as the snake's fangs were just inches away from her face, that same arrow plunged down through its head and closed that mouth.

The serpent fell to the ground, wriggling furiously while trying to get rid of the arrow.  In the meanwhile, Satsune scrambled up to her feet, and swiftly plunged her katana into the flesh of the snake, snapping its head of with a single swing of her bladed weapon.

As the deed was done, Satsune looked wildly around for Suzaku and to check if there was more danger.

Suzaku moved at a brisk pace through the forest, though not so fast as to hamper his ability to perceive any and all potential threats that had managed to stray too close to their current position. Even as Satsune spoke, all his senses were focused on the task at hand, rather than listening to her, casting the occasional nod and an idle.

"Uh-huh..."

A tactic that all men seemed to utilize at least once in their life; especially when dealing with overly chatty or nagging females. So grating was the girl's voice and tone that Suzaku found his resolve wavering, the urge to light the bent cigarette in his mouth becoming an almost irresistible force. His left hand twitched slightly, already beginning the movement toward one of the many pockets on his outfit, aiming to grasp the lighter but he stopped himself. The memory of the Hokage's expression still sitting firmly in his mind. If she was indeed watching then perhaps she wouldn't take too kindly to Suzaku having a smoke in the middle of this "assignment". It was hard to tell and the woman hard to read. It wasn't as if Suzaku had been allowed an abundance of time to try and figure her out. He was sure that if he had been given that luxury that predicting the woman's actions would have been easier. Was she sadistic? Was she gentle? Was she a hard-ass? Was she nurturing? All these questions and more swirled in the boy's mind as he trekked through the dense brush with his female team member in tow; a team member who was still talking. Did she really need to go about saying all this? Suzaku rolled his eyes, a bored expression blatantly sitting on his face, though going unnoticed due to his leading position.

Suzaku would stop now; Satsune's words seemingly striking a nerve. The boy made no attempt to look over his shoulder, however, his eyes continuing their scanning movement over his surroundings.

"Do it then."

He'd say lightly, his voice still sounding as pleasant as ever, the tone never seeming to change. Though the words seemed to come out pleasant enough, there was definitely an almost menacing undertone. Whether it was his attempt to intimidate her or simply an ever present characteristic to that gruff and gravelly manner in which he spoke was hard to say. Another moment of silence would pass before he would give his head a light shake.

"These are my true colors. It's up to you if you want to be suspicious of me. I don't have to like you to respect you and your abilities. And I don't have to be a genius to realize that right now all of us need one another and are going to be stuck together for a long time after we get out of here. And make no mistake, we will get out. So you can continue to be suspicious and bitchy if you want and Masamori can continue to be a stubborn jackass, but you two aren't going to drag my attitude down with you. So long as we're all alive, then that's a good day for me. Now let's go, and keep your voice down so we don't attract any unwanted attention. I'm not too keen on being lunch today."

With that the boy would continue forward, saying no more on the subject. He had no intention of arguing with either Satsune or Masamori on how he chose to act. In terms of team cohesiveness, there was no reason to blame any sort of breakdown on his attitude. The boy did what he had to and he did so with a smile. Whether it was forced or genuine was of little consequence when one considered that the alternative to working together was becoming a meal for the numerous predators that lay in wait for any careless soul to wander into their grasp.

Suzaku was pleased to see that Satsune seemed to take some of his words to heart; the statement about her needing to keep chatter to a minimum while in the forest. Talking was overrated, after all, especially when one considered that many of the beasts that lurked beyond Suzaku's line of sight probably used sound as a means to locate their prey. Suzaku listened silently as Satsune made the occasional comment about their current progress to their intended destination. He trusted that she was right in directing him. She had, after all, seen the scroll through the use of that unusual technique of hers. He'd make note to inquire about that strange jutsu at a more suitable time. For now however his mind was focused on their current task, at least until his sensitive ears managed to pick up the sound of a not so distant explosion rippling through the air. Suzaku's eyes widened as his head snapped in the direction from whence the sound came.

So focused was Suzaku on the thought of Masamori having potentially been injured that Satsune's words had barely registered with him. Swallowing hard, he'd slowly allow those amber pools of his to narrow. Masamori had been the one to make the decision to go off on his own, yet Suzaku couldn't help but feel as though he were the one responsible for the team's current state; he had been the one to allow Masamori to run off on his own, after all. Suzaku's anxiety began to creep up on him, images of the injured Yuki flooding his mind and making him slightly jittery. Should he go check on Masamori? Then what about Satsune? Would she come with him? He couldn't very well leave her alone, could he? She had seemed so adamantly against the prospect of being left alone in the forest, not that Suzaku blamed her. Suzaku wouldn't have long to ponder such things, however. In the next moment Suzaku's thoughts were drawn to a more immediate concern. The hissing of the serpentine predator did not go unnoticed and as a result the boy's head immediately swiveled toward the creature, quickly assessing the situation and jumping backwards to narrowly avoid being potentially struck by the large creature's dangerous fangs.

Flying backwards through the air, Suzaku quickly adjusted his position, his feet landing firmly against the trunk of a large tree, a single hand coming down to rest against the arboreal body in order to aid the youth in maintaining both balance and stability as he remained firmly stuck to the side of the tree's base in direct defiance to the concept of gravity. Suzaku watched with bated breath as the large snake seemed to take more interest in Satsune, unsure of whether it be because she had been the one to injure it or the fact that she was noticeably smaller than Suzaku. Whatever the reason, Suzaku could only watch for the time being, too hesitant to interfere for fear of breaking Satsune's "flow" and getting in her way. Rather he used the allotted time to quickly scan the area to confirm that there was indeed only a single adversary for the duo to deal with. Upon returning his gaze back to the scuffle before him he watched with horror as he noticed Satsune seem to lose her footing. Without a moment's pause Suzaku was upon the creature, his voice cutting through the air as he let out a tremendous roar of anger and pain as his lithe frame collided violently with the snake's slithering body in the moment that it had prepared to lunge for Satsune's downed form.

Suzaku's world exploded in pain as he felt the snake's fangs sink deep into his left forearm. Not only that but an alltogether new sensation took hold, inducing a sense of dread and rage in the raven-haired youth's panic-stricken mind. It felt as though his entire body were being torn apart from the inside out! His eyes widened as he felt the second impact of both his and the snake's body slamming into another tree directly behind the beast, the snake seemingly pinned between Suzaku's arm; which was firmly planted in the creature's open jaw and the large tree trunk behind the snake's skull. Suzaku winced as he felt the snake's large body struggling, its tale whipping around frantically in an effort to try and break itself free from it's new overly-vulnerable position.

With his breath coming out in harsh pants Suzaku could only stare in an almost dumbfounded state as he realized the source of this strange pain. Aside from the fangs that had managed to make their way into the musculature of his forearm he also noticed how several strange white spikes seemed to have spawned from his arm, penetrating the snake through the upper portion of his jaw and skull, though managing to have missed its brain, thus subjecting the creature to an indescribable amount of pain as blood seeped from the gaping wounds. What are those?! Suzaku could hear the fear in his own thoughts but he dared not pull his arm away lest he free the serpent. What he didn't notice however were how those very same projections seemed to have sprouted across his back, protruding from the tips of his shoulder blades and from the center of his spine about half way from his buttocks to his neck, easily tearing large holes in both his flesh and clothing. He felt the pain though, his entire body seeming to cry in protest with every movement he made.

"Satsune..."

He'd suddenly say, his right hand shakily moving toward his own back, reaching beneath the flap of his jacket. So clumsily his hand moved that one could not help but notice the ninjato for which he was reaching for, his fingers wrapping slowly around the hilt as he glared at the snake.

"You were right... I don't like you, but... as long as you wear that headband and continue to call yourself a konoha shinobi... As long as I can call you an ally then I will always do my best to protect you... That goes for anyone who I can call an ally."

The words came out slowly, obviously straining against the urge to cry out in pain as he continued to struggle with the snake, whom's movements were starting to slow down, obviously growing weak from the major injury it had sustained.

"Someone once told me to never draw my weapon unless I intend to kill or... Unless I intend to protect something valuable to me. So shut up and watch...and remember this the next time you decide I'm not being straight with you."

With that the ninjato came out, it's slick metal blade sliding easily from its sheath, reflecting brightly in the slivers of light that managed to break through the canopy above. It was obvious the blade had never been used until this day. With a practiced efficiency Suzaku spun the blade in his hand, bringing it from a reverse-grip style to a proper hold before suddenly slamming it forward into the snake's body just under its head. With a forceful sideways slash he'd sever the snake's head from its body, allowing the long tail to fall in coils at his feet as the snake's movements were suddenly arrested, leaving nothing but the dead head still latched firmly to Suzaku's arm. With a grunt he'd yank his arm backwards, dislodging the bony spikes from the large tree in front of him.

The raven-haired youth would then proceed to release his ninjato, letting it fall to his feet before grabbing the snake's head, letting out a small yelp of pain as he yanked the snake's large head from his arm, dislodging the fangs, revealing the two large holes left by the creature's bite. Without the fangs to plug the holes blood would begin to flow from the wound as well as from around the bony spike-like projections all over his body. Upon freeing his hand from the snake's grasp he'd reach down to retrieve his weapon, replacing it in its sheath, doing his best to try and hide the fact that whatever these strange spikes were, they were hurting him greatly, his movements stiff and slow as he tried his best not to agitate his wounds. A shuttering exhalation would leave his lips as he stared down at the strange spikes on his left forearm, a rather fearful and confused expression managing to overtake his haggard features, making it more than obvious that this was the first time he had ever seen such a thing much less experienced it first hand. The pain was evident in his eyes but he did well to not let it show more than he already had.

"We need..."

He'd pause for a moment, his breathing heavy at this point.

"We need to check...Masamori...he could be in danger..."

He tried to push aside his fear for now. These things, whatever they were, wouldn't get in the way of what needed to be done. He could still move, albeit slowly and stiffly. He could still fight and he could definitely still be of some help. If push came to shove he knew he could manage. As he thought that he'd begin to tear at the sleeve of his hooded sweatshirt, easily tearing the fabric asunder before tying it around the puncture wounds left in the wake of the snake's attack. As all this occurred, not once did his eyes ever meet Satsune's, the boy finding himself too self conscious about how he looked at the moment to even think about dealing with her suspicious or hateful glares at this point.

"Let's go...I refuse to let anyone die here..."

[OOC:  Me and Eric were required to skip Amy and Chris for this round]

She had already planned out the end of this fight, how she would have slammed the arrow through the snake's mouth before beheading it swiftly with her sharp Katana.  Just a single downward thrust, a twist of her wrist; and it'd be dead.  The young female was not scared in this situation, rather there was adrenaline pumping through her veins in these very few short seconds.  This adrenaline was making her feel more alive than ever, and it helped sharpen and hurry her movements.  She honestly felt like time around them was moving in slow motion.  There was no hesitation in her thoughts or actions, because there was no time for hesitation.  Her eyes glistened over with the excitement of being involved in a life or a death situation like this.  Somewhere deep down there was fear as well of course, but she didn't have time to think about that as she stared into the yellow stones that were the snake's eyes.  The girl had forgotten completely about her comrade.  But then something happened, something that completely altered her already decided plans.

A shout of anger snapped her out of the trance, and suddenly the snake was no longer charging at her.  With wide eyes, Satsune watched Suzaku as he had collided with the serpent.  Why?  Her breathing was fast, her usually neat and tidy hair was at a disarray, her cheeks were flushed; yet all she noticed was what was happening in front of her.  Why had he jumped into the fight?  The snake was biting him, was he absolutely out of his mind?  They didn't know if the snake was poisonous or not!  The grappling pair crashed into a tree, the fight between the two was fierce.  But what Satsune was watching wasn't the fight itself, but rather...

What the heck is happening to Suzaku?

There was what seemed to be white spikes spawning out of his arm and back.  It was a peculiar sight, and maybe horrible to many who weren't Satsune.

Bones?

This wasn't an unfamiliar sight to her, seeing how she had been training and communicating with a Kaguya for more than a year.  But, why hadn't he told her?  Told her and Snowflake?  Why should he?  Perhaps he had been waiting for a chance to get her with that ability of his.  But why did he then jump into the fight?  If he wanted her dead, he could have just ... watched her fight the snake and see what happened.

"Satsune..."

The female jerked a bit at the sound of her own name.  She had finally gotten around to standing up, and was wondering if she should approach the struggling snake and male.

"You were right... I don't like you, but... as long as you wear that headband and continue to call yourself a konoha shinobi... As long as I can call you an ally then I will always do my best to protect you... That goes for anyone who I can call an ally."

Her lips parted slightly, but she didn't say anything.  She only watched and listened.

"Someone once told me to never draw my weapon unless I intend to kill or... Unless I intend to protect something valuable to me. So shut up and watch...and remember this the next time you decide I'm not being straight with you."

A blush spread out over her entire face just as he dropped the last words.  What?!  Just what was his purpose of saying these damn cheesy words?!  Did he think he was some knight in a shining armour on a white horse come to rescue the damsel in distress?  Satsune had no idea why she felt as flustered as she did, but it truly set her anger off, because that idiot had rushed into a dangerous situation and gotten himself injured.  If he had believed in her abilities they would have been just fine right now!

With narrowed eyes, she watched the male draw out his ninjato; and then the fight was over.  He killed the snake.  Chopped off its head.  That should have been my kill.  She grumbled to herself as she sheathed her Katana again, and moved towards the male who was just then yelping as he pulled the large fangs out of his arm.  What puzzled her most of all, was how he kept looking at the producing bones from his arm.  He looked scared and very surprised.  Don't tell me he didn't know?  The boy moved with obvious pain, his tone strangely strained whilst he started moving.  A loud groan of annoyance escaped Satsune as she stomped onward to catch up with him.  What a fucking nuisance.  Now we have to go search for that stupid Yuki fuck that decided to leave on his own and is probably hurt somewhere.

"Let's go...I refuse to let anyone die here..."

"Then how about you sit down for a second and breathe through your nose while I check your damn arm?  If you are so intent on playing the damn hero then at least think of your own life also!  God dammit we don't know if that snake was poisonous or not!  I never asked for any damn help, and you didn't have to rush in like an idiot and get yourself hurt!"

I can't believe this idiot! Why would he ever go so far for someone else?

She would reach him, step in front of him, and either Suzaku would sit down on his own accordance or Satsune -would- make him.  Her voice had sounded harsh, yet there was a strange and new slightly gentler undertone than usually.  She was after all, a bit flustered still from those weird words of his. And she honestly wasn't sure if she should hit him or pity him for having such .. noble thoughts. When she'd manage to have him sit down, Satsune would sit for a few seconds and stare at his wounded arm.  It looked.... dirty.  There was blood everywhere.  Her germophobia was screaming inside of her head; her hands were shaking violently as she did a few attempts to touch his arm.  He might probably just mistake it for fear of blood, or that she was scared of seeing the wound.  Whatever it was, it was clear that she was not feeling very well any more.

I can do this.  I can do this.  I'm already dirty, and I am still alive.  Yoroi said this is all in my head.  This is something I can deal with.  I just have to... do it!

The female took a deep breath, and then with surprisingly gentle movements, she finally managed to grab his arm lightly and took away the fabric he had used to cover up the wounds.  With a scrutinizing gaze she leaned closer to the puncture wounds, her eyebrows almost meeting in the middle of her forehead in a concentrated frown.  The female quickly retrieved a water bottle from her satchel, and then unbuttoned her coat.  As she had it unbuttoned all the way, she tore a piece of her shirt (knowing it was way cleaner than the fabric he had used) and gently started to wash out the puncture wounds.  Her face switched from a green to a white complexion as she did so, small droplets of sweat formed on her forehead, and she had to fight through each second so she wouldn't retch violently over his wounded arm.  The smell of the blood, the sight of it and the dirt mingling together... that along with the fact that she was actually -cleaning it- off his arm was seriously attacking and abusing her germophobia.  The female bit her lips together as she finished cleaning the wound as well as she could before binding it with a new strip of her shirt.

Although she did not thank him for what he did earlier, this action was probably the closest he would get to 'thanks' from her.  She was being gentle, wasn't exactly yelling at him, and was doing what she could to help him out in this fucked up situation. That was as far as she could go. Because first of all, Satsune never said thank you to anyone.  And second of all she still thought he had been stupid to rush in like that.  Right now however, they didn't have time to wonder or argue about that.

"I-I can't see if it has poison or not in it.  I don't know.. what more to ... do.."

Her voice was strained, as if she was the one who was in pain.  And suddenly she pushed up to her feet and managed to stumble a few steps before vomiting violently onto the ground.  She coughed and spat out saliva, glad that she hadn't eaten that big of a breakfast.  Still shaking and feeling completely disgusted with what she had had to do, Satsune took a gulp of the water and then used just a little bit of the liquid to clean her hands.  She had to stand there and take deep breaths a few times, before she could turn around and face Suzaku again.  She felt a bit mortified, and without a word she went to get a scroll again and some brushes and ink.  The same technique as before was made, she was going to let the mice go first and check just how far they'd get before they were eaten by something.  Also there was the chance that one or two of them would catch the scent or sight of the Yuki.

After the little flock of mice got out of sight, she waited patiently and focused.  She needed a few more minutes before talking to Suzaku.  One after the other the mice disappeared, but she gained some useful information.  And if she was not mistaken, then the Yuki was not that far away.  There had been the smell of blood in the air where the last mouse had been, and also the disgusting after-smell of an explosion which had lingered in the air.  The mouse was dispersed, and only then did she finally look at the male.  Or to be more precise, she looked at where the bones were still sticking out of his flesh.  Her red eyes then travelled up to his face where she studied him for a few seconds.

"Why don't you pull them back in?  Don't you know how to?  Is this the first time you use them?"

To Suzaku she would probably look and sound way too calm and casual towards what was happening to his body.  The female still felt a little angry, and flustered, after what had happened; but she sighed as she decided that now was not the time to lecture.  So she was not acting as hostile as she wanted to.  With regret she looked back to where the pond probably was hiding with a scroll.  The female knew that Suzaku would go searching for the Yuki no matter what she said, so she might as well tag along with him.  She was not about to be left alone somewhere, and he was injured now.  Does that mean I'm responsible for him?  Ugh.

"Come on mister knight in shining armour, let's find the village idiot and then get back on the task at hand.  He had medical skills didn't he?  So he should know if you are poisoned or not.  I too am not about to let anyone die."

She would give him a stern look of scolding, before offering him her hand to get up, and he could either take it or leave it.  Either way she would start speaking out again before waiting for action.

"Snowflake isn't that far away, there was a strong scent of blood in the air in that direction. And he better come with us this time, I don't have enough Chakra to keep searching for him everywhere."

She pointed, and then waited for Suzaku to respond.  Or move.  Or just do something.  If he'd seem to require help with moving, Satsune would reluctantly offer a shoulder for him to use as support. If he would object, she'd snap at him about being too slow to move on his own. However if he would start walking at a somewhat normal pace while trying not to show that he was feeling bad, she'd simply walk behind him and watch out for danger.

Suzaku had already begun to head off into the forest in the direction in which he thought the sound of the explosion had resonated from, his aim simply being to find Masamori and tell the Yuki that they were all going to stick together from now on. Splitting up had been a bad idea from the start, something that both he and Satsune had made known to their taller comrade, yet Suzaku had let Masamori run off instead of pushing the issue. It had been the wrong move. At the time Suzaku hadn't realized it, but now, with his body feeling as though it were tearing itself apart from the inside, he knew it had been wrong. If something happened to any of the three, then the other two would need to cover for the fallen party member's weakness. Such a thing could not be done if they were divided. The forest would win through a divide and conquer tactic. It was them against this hellish place and already it had seemed that they were in dire straits and he had a feeling that things would only get worse.

The dull roar of Satsune's voice seemed to fall on deaf ears, or rather, Suzaku heard it but tried to ignore it. His head was pounding at this point, his internal environment thrown into chaos from the adrenaline pumping through his system and whatever else that had been introduced into his body from the snake's fangs. Even if the serpent hadn't been poisonous, one had to account for the natural bacterial contained in the creature's mouth. There were things far more insidious than toxins, things that could kill over a prolonged period of time. Suzaku tried not to think about such things, shaking his head lightly which only worsened the throbbing global pain. In the next moment Satsune was in front of him, blocking his path and glaring at him with those red hues that he had tried so hard to avoid. A defeated sigh left the boy's mouth before he'd step backwards, eventually coming to sit on large rock that seemed imbedded in the earth below. He'd give a small nod, signaling in a silent manner that he'd allow her to perform her impromptu inspection. If it would put her mind at ease then he'd comply. The last thing he needed was for her to be in an even worse mood than she already seemed to be.

Suzaku didn't for a second think himself some great hero, nor did he allow his pride to swell at idea that he had possibly saved her. Her words carried truth. She hadn't asked for help and perhaps she could have taken care of the forest beast without his assistance, but at the time with his mind and body thrown into such a distressing situation, seemingly fueled by nothing but pure adrenaline, his movements had been largely automatic, his actions performed without hesitation or forethought. It hadn't been until he had pinned the snake to the tree had things slowed down enough for him to reflect upon his actions. He didn't regret it, but perhaps it would have been better to have trusted in the girl's abilities.

"Hey Satsune..."

He'd speak as he watched her timidly try to examine the injured area, her hands shaking like leaves in a strong wind. Several pangs of guilt went off in his chest. He didn't like people being so worried about him, or feeling the need to help him. He had gone through his whole life extorting such sentiments, begging for food and money. He hated it then and he hated it now, but he made no effort to pull away. Deep down he thought he could catch a glimpse of concern on her features. It was slight though, probably impossible for most to see. Suzaku wasn't like most though. Years spent studying and dealing with people had given the boy a unique insight into the psyche of those around him. It wasn't so much a skill that he had simply picked up but one that was absolutely necessary for one whom had been in his position to survive and although he no longer needed to rely on such tactics, he found that this skill of his had a wide range of application. It helped him read his fellow shinobi and team members. It would probably help him in coming to understand their enigmatic leader as well. For now though his attention was focused on Satsune.

"...Sorry about jumping in like that. I know you didn't ask for my help. My body just sorta moved on it's own, y'know?"

It was the best he could give her. His eyes failed to meet hers however, continuing to stare at the arm she was fussing over, watching as she removed his makeshift bandage and worked to clean the area. Suzaku could tell how difficult this was for her, the way she regarded the blood and the dirt and broken flesh. Was she squeamish? It seemed much more than that, much more intense than a simple aversion to blood and wounds. Suzaku's eyes narrowed, his mind beginning to wander back to the restaurant where they had first met as an official team. She had brought her own food. At the time Suzaku hadn't thought much of it but now he was beginning to see the vague outline of a picture slowly coming together. His mind delved further back, back to their days in the academy. The two had never spoken, nor interacted aside from the occasional glance or stare. It was no secret that Satsune had spent a decent amount of time staring at Suzaku; something that genuinely had scared the boy. What might have been a surprise though was the idea that Suzaku had also been watching, noticing small peculiarities. It was through his observations of her in their early years that he had known about her habit of drawing and her skill level in such an activity. It was also through these observations that he had noticed her rather anti-social tendencies and how they both mirrored and dwarfed his own. One thing he had never thought too much about was her refusal to make any sort of human contact unless absolutely forced. No one was allowed to touch Hariko Satsune.

Back then such an unspoken rule had seemed more of social structure setting. She had arguably been the queen of all bullies. Who would want to touch her or be touched by her?! Now though, as Suzaku watched those trembling limbs clumsily groping the injured appendage, he wondered if perhaps such a rule had been erected by Satsune herself for fear of what human contact meant. Taint. Dirtiness. Disgust. Germs. All of these things and more. She was terrified of touching people! She was terrified of touching anything that looked dirty! Suzaku felt his eyes narrowing more as he came to this epiphany, a small smirk curling on his face despite the pain that wracked his body. He made no sound though, nor did he bring it up. That was just asking for trouble. Nobody liked to have their fears and insecurities paraded around for all to see. No one liked the idea of being figured out and in the face of such an occurrence they would most assuredly become defensive and even hostile. That wasn't needed right now and there was always the chance that the raven-haired youth could be completely wrong. Without putting his theory to the test, he'd never know and perhaps that was for the better. In the very least, it granted the boy a bit of insight into the mind of his female companion. "I-I can't see if it has poison or not in it.  I don't know.. what more to ... do.."

The female's words brought Suzaku back to the present, back to their current situation. That's right, he had been bitten by the snake and here Sastune was, fretting in her own way about his current condition. He'd respond to her words with a light chuckle, as if the situation were some sort of joke.

"No, I don't suppose you'd be able to tell just by looking. Most snake bites don't usually have enough poison to immediately kill a person. Though judging by the size of that snake I think it's safe to assume that if I had been poisoned I'd be dead by now. We'll just have to wait and see what happens. Heh."

His tone held a lackadaisical quality to it, shrugging off the supposed seriousness of their situation as though it were an everyday occurrence. How different he was sober when compared to his attitude when drunk. Aside from the outburst of anger toward the snake there was little that seemed to phase him. He still felt awful though, the pain that had plagued him this morning intensifying from the earlier exertion and rising further at the emergence of those strange spikes projecting from his body. His eyes moved toward the bone-like spines that protruded from and broke the surface of his skin. It looked as though he had broken several bones yet at the same time the skeletal structure of these unnatural appendages was unfamiliar and did little to mimic the natural anatomy of a normal human being. His eyes narrowed again as he started to lose himself in thought once more, only to be brought back again by Satsune's voice. "Why don't you pull them back in?  Don't you know how to?  Is this the first time you use them?"

"Huh?"

Suzaku would blink in confusion. What did she mean by "pull them back in"? His first time? She wasn't making sense. Had she seen this before? He'd make a slight groaning sound as he closed his eyes, his head pounding with pain as he tried to concentrate.

"I don't understand... Are you trying to imply that I did this to myself and that I can somehow control it?"

Suzaku didn't wait for an answer. That must have been it. She wouldn't have made such a comment otherwise. Was this some strange ability rather than a disease or an injury? It was true that he had just come to the conclusion that if these projections were indeed bone as they looked, that they seemed far too unnatural to be of his own skeletal structure. They were misshapen and lacked proportion. Too thin in some places and too thick in the other. The ones on his shoulder and back were too long and slender to be part of his scauplae and though he could not see the one projection from his back, he didn't suppose that he'd be able to stand had it been a true portion of his axial skeleton that were jutting through his skin. That left the question: What the hell were these things? With a trembling right hand he would move to grab at one of the bony spikes on his left forearm and try to push it inward, aiming to force the strange bone back into his body. The attempt wouldn't last long as his entire body seemed to seize in pain, the starts of a yell welling up in his throat before he quickly bit down on his own tongue to silence himself, the iron taste of blood filling his mouth.

"FFFFFFFFFUUUUUU-"

He'd suddenly slump forward, his eyes shut tight as he allowed his breath to come in heavy pants. By now Satsune had managed to finish scouting with her strange mouse producing technique. He could hear her voice though it was drowned out by his own thoughts as he tried to calm himself down. So fixated on the bones was he that he had missed her earlier display of revulsion, her vomiting and retching going unnoticed by the boy as he now dealt with his own pains. A part of him was glad that he couldn't hear her clearly, knowing that his display of vulnerability at this point would most likely not sit well with the callous girl. That's not going to work. They won't go back inside... He thought weakly to himself, his left hand still clutching the spike tightly. He could have just left them where they were but that would leave him with a chronic, aching pain that managed to register pretty high on his personal pain scale.

"One option left...."

He'd grimace as he spoke to himself, his eyes only rising as high as Satsune's knees before he suddenly began to pull. Again he felt the same pain radiating throughout his body from the point of attachment and again he was tempted to yell out but this time he had mentally prepared himself, bracing his entire body as he tugged on the strange spike. At first there was nothing then suddenly... It moved! The strange spike seemed to elongate just slightly, or rather seemed to start to dislodge itself from his arm. The pain that came with the sudden shift nearly brought tears to the boy's eyes but at the same time there was something strangely pleasant, a dull pleasurable feeling in the act as though tugging at it felt like the right thing to do. Suzaku focused on this, reasoning that his body was trying to tell him how to fix this. He kept going and in a matter of seconds would tear the bony structure from his arm, staring at it with wide eyes as blood trickled from the end before tossing it aside and grasping the next one.

"That's one..."

He'd gasp before suddenly tugging on the next. Like before pain started followed by just enough pleasure and physical reassurance to make Suzaku feel secure enough to continue the act. The second came easier than the first, most likely due to Suzaku now having more confidence in what he was doing. The spike came out, slightly curved as though it had been a large talon like object, yet misshapen and malformed as it lacked uniform thickness. He'd toss it toward the first.

"...T-two..."

His voice was weaker now, more blood spilling from the areas the bones had managed to slip out from. Now came the third and final piece on his arm. Inhaling deeply he grasped for it and after a mental countdown he'd yank hard and fast, having no desire to drag this out more than he already had. It came out relatively easy, this one smaller than the first two, yet more blood poured from his arm, staining his olive green hooded sweatshirt in a dark wet crimson stain. The entire sleeve was a blood bath at this point.

"....that's three...Now...the shoulders..."

Before Satsune had a chance to say anything his arms crossed in front of his chest, right hand reaching toward the left shoulder and left hand going for the right shoulder. Both hands would clutch as the strange bony spikes that seemed to add an overall broadness to the youth's frame. Without hesitation he tugged on both, out and downward as though he were drawing twin swords from back-mounted sheaths. At first they didn't budge, the boy grunting in strain as the muscles in his arms flexed and contracted then after a few seconds they moved, sliding from his skin and exiting his body, leaving two gaping holes in their wake. Without even taking the moment to inspect the strange spikes, he'd toss them aside and bring his right hand behind him, gripping awkwardly at the final spike that was situated near the center of his rear.

"Last one...."

He'd whisper, more to himself than to Satsune. He'd pull hard, grunting as he did so, giving little thought for the consequences of messing with something situated so close to his spine. He'd be damned if he was going to let this thing just hang there. From his current angle the bone was hard to dislodge, offering ample resistance as the shoulder spikes had done, but like the rest it eventually gave, allowing Suzaku to move it as he inhaled sharply. He'd hold his breath as he pulled the long spike from his back, letting it drop behind him once he had finished. Once finished he'd lean forward again, his body trembling as it tried to allocate his remaining blood supply to the vital organs that would serve to keep him alive while also trying to provide some relief from the multiple surges of pain that had taken hold of the youth. Though he heard Satsune's voice, telling him that Masamori wasn't far from his current location, he'd remain seated for a minute or two, silent as he tried to regain his composure.

"Alright...I'm ready..."

His eyes focused dully on her hand as she extended toward him, a strange thing for her to do, considering the conclusion he had just managed to draw about her. He'd finally glance up at her, offering a weak yet reassuring smirk before pulling himself to his feet, not wishing to disgust her more than he probably already had.

"That way...right?"

He'd motion in the direction from where he thought he had heard the explosion, the way in which Satsune pointed. He'd begin to move, his pace a bit slower than earlier but far from stiff. Though removing the bones had been a painful affair it had seemed to help with his overall state, allowing him to continue functioning despite the large blood stains that now covered the majority of his shirt.

Vulnerable & Alone?

Once Masamori had sat himself on the branch, though it was perhaps more accurate to say that he slumped himself awkwardly against the bark, not really making an attempt to hold on, there was little for him to do. His body seemed to have exerted its very last energy on the task of climbing up the tree, meaning he was at this point completely exhausted and highly vulnerable, though fortunately in a position of high ground. Still, despite his almost complete deprivation of energy, he had somehow managed to hold on to his hiding spot in this dazed state and that was an achievement in itself, he figured, trying to boost his own spirits somewhat. However the fact that he was this weak and hazy made him realise that he wouldn’t be moving as quickly away from this place as he had originally wanted to.

In fact, there were only two things he could really do at this point – watch, wearily, how the carcass was devoured or close his eyes. The latter seemed too dangerous in this particular context. He was too liable to fall asleep and then fall off the branch and even if he did not do so, the monsters that had ignored him for the time being could easily change their mind once their main meal was done and they saw him dozing off. He didn’t want to end up as the dessert of some rabid wolf-dog hybrid.

So his eyes remained peeled to the gruesome scene. The manner of creatures he saw, eating away at the flesh of the large bird, both surprised and shocked him. Whilst a majority of the animals were of normal proportions, and were of an easily identifiable species, some of the critters were surprisingly deformed and odd looking. Many carried battle wounds: scars, missing ears, claws and one even had a missing eye. For the most part however, they were either hounds or vultures or snakes, of which the first two seemed somewhat capable of cooperation in this hefty task. The few snakes that he saw were isolated cases and though they were abnormally large, they were still smaller than humans. They coiled around what was left of the bird’s head, away from the other two. The hounds carried a great deal variety, some more wolf life, others rabid, but he could imagine they were extremely wild and at the end of the day, just as dangerous as each other; perhaps less so, only because their hunger was sated. The vultures, somewhat ironically, looked like much smaller versions of the thing he had killed. They were probably the only real danger to him, but knowing their nature, or at least hoping that the textbooks spoke the truth, they wouldn’t touch him unless he himself was dead.

The youth was awash with blood, or rather, almost all of his upper body was. Somehow, his hair had managed to avoid the grim liquid, though his face had splatters of the stuff. In fact, some had gotten on his lips and a careless movement of the tongue had had him spitting and almost retching. Still, weirdly enough, the sensation gave him some strength back. He wondered for a second, trying to pinpoint the reason for his weakness. Yes, he had taken a hard fall, but had he not been knocked unconscious for that exact reason? He thought about the blood. Perhaps the smell of it made him nauseous? Perhaps, like when some persons weaken at its sight or smell, its strong proximity simply completely deprived him of the will to move!

Was he paralysed by this potentially ominous and foreboding substance? There was only one solution. With a desperate, awkward movement of his hands, the youth took his naginata out of its sheath and deftly stuck it into the bark, as far as he could. Then slowly but surely, he grasped on to his top, pulling and tugging until it slowly shifted off his body, the blood having soaked through the fabric which resulted in the clothes sticking to his flesh. Yet as he pulled, the liquid seemed to give way all too suddenly, almost knocking the youth completely off the branch! But he had succeeded in removing the blood-stained fabric, and, well, that was that. He was topless now.

Just like he had assumed he felt better almost instantly, welcoming the oddly refreshing sensation of when the first rush of cold wind hit him square on; not smelling the blood so intensely also helped. At these times, he loved being a Yuki. Rather than shake and proceed to slowly freeze to death, this was a rather comfortable temperature in his mind. The chill was a welcome sensation to his now awoken body.

Before the youth could think much of it however, he heard incoming sounds. Maybe the explosion had tampered with his senses, but the footsteps were really loud and clear – he was certain of at least one set of such, judging by the slightly heavy way in which the source moved – and they were coming this way. Swiftly, with his body not only awaken by the cold but now also highly alerted to this potential danger, with adrenaline beginning to pump into his system, the youth threw his top down to the ground, hoping the sight of the messy, indistinguishable carcass and the bloodied garment would suggest to whoever was coming, that the bird and the boy had both perished, the latter perhaps from the teeth of the hounds.

Masamori didn’t trust that plan too much of course. He figured only his new-sensei or his teammates were actually in the Forest, unless by some coincidence, another individual entirely had entered the gruesome training ground. Regardless, he knew that this little diversion was crucial to giving him more time to gather up his strength and assess the enemy, should an enemy indeed show up. In this case, he figured his sensei would act as such, as part of the training, so she was to be treated with the utmost suspicion.

In a burst of quick movements performed by his almost-recovered body, the youth grabbed his weapon and dashed upwards, further climbing the tree until he had manoeuvred himself way out of the line of sight of anyone who wasn’t looking completely upright. Indeed, he was practically vertically above the incoming figure when said figure showed up. But the figure was not alone. Indeed there were two of them, and it didn’t take the youth more than a few seconds to realise that their torn-up state of clothing, as well as the bloodied state of one of them, only heralded his boring-old teammates; so they had been in a fight too, had they?

Before the two could assume too much about what had happened to the Yuki, the youth spoke up from the branches above. “You’re late” he had said loudly, his customarily emotionless tone present behind those words. But perhaps hidden somewhere within that standard Yuki coldness, was a shroud of relief.

Without much ado, the boy jumped down from his hiding spot, landing somewhat gracefully behind the two. This gave him a good few seconds to survey their new appearances, before they turned around to face him. Though his discarded garment might have suggested a horrid state, the youth was in fact mildly concussed and bruised at best. On the other hand, the two looked more haggard than him and more so than he had imagined they were when he first saw them from above, with Satsune’s torn clothes present on Suzaku’s arm. And his old friend was covered in blood. “What happened to you two?” the youth asked, his tone betraying his surprise at their state. And he thought he had had it bad.

"I don't understand... Are you trying to imply that I did this to myself and that I can somehow control it?"

Suzaku got a sideways glance while Satsune tried to figure out if he was joking around with her.  Trying to be a smart ass, the funny guy.  But the boy was truly too scared and, well shocked, over the state of his body for her to believe he was -that- good of an actor.  What the heck?  How can he be a Kaguya and not know about it?  What is this shit?  Her expression did not hide what she was thinking while the raven haired female watched the male start pushing the bones back in.  Actually pushing them and causing himself more pain, than if he'd just 'pull them back in'.  Well, to say that he was actually pushing the bones in would have been a lie.  He -tried- to do it, and then only screamed out in pain; making Satsune jump slightly and look in all directions to see if the noise was attracting any unwanted attention.

Goddammit can't he do this more silently?

She stood still, trying to be as alert as she could to the surroundings, whilst her eyes continued to stray towards the troubled male.  It seemed like a new idea had sparked inside of his mind, and now he started to pull on the bones.  A scowl of confusion marked Satsune's expression, but she said nothing.  If he wanted to do it the hard way then he could do that.  Just as long as he'd stop the damn screaming.  She couldn't help but cringe a bit while watching him, and she could only imagine how it could feel.  To watch someone pulling their bones out was ... bizarre to say the least, and had she not been training with a Kaguya for the bigger part of a year by now, she might have found herself getting sick for the second time that day.  Her body was already calming down a bit, yet she could feel small shivers run through her limbs every now and then.  There was a disgusting taste in her mouth still, even when she had rinsed it with water, and Satsune was feeling rather irritated at this point.  It was taking a lot of her willpower to ignore the nagging thoughts of germs crawling up her skin, invading her system. She had to bite hard on the inside of her cheek, and use that pain to distract herself from starting to panic again.

This is just messed up.  Really messed up.

Everything around the two of them was completely silent, way too silent for her taste actually.  It was as if a million pair of eyes were settling on the young humans, yet nothing came out from hiding.  Nothing made a move to attack. There was no snarling or snapping. No growling or yowling. Not a single branch moved, the only sound drifting to Satsune's ears were the groans of the pained male.  Did the smell of blood scare the animals away?  No that was not possible, as blood was supposed to attract the predators. Then was it the noise?  Or perhaps they had all noticed how the snake had fared, and therefore a better hunting plan was needed before proceeding to make a snack out of these delicious looking teens.  Whatever it was that kept them away for now, she was sure it wouldn't last forever and really wished that Suzaku would hurry up with his little self-torment moment.

He had made good progress so far, almost making her able to admire his high threshold of pain.  Or perhaps he was just too damn stubborn to give up?  Yeah I'd place my bet on that. Her team mate was down to the last bone, slowly and obviously painfully pulling at it.  The fresh blood spilling onto the ground mirrored the deep red colour within Satsune's eyes as she watched in a somewhat fascinated manner at this freak show of a scene.  It was like Satsune was in the middle of a horror story. A carnival of carnage and gore. She sort of wanted to ask Suzaku why he hadn't realized this sooner, or rather how exactly he had managed to -not- notice until now what powers he possessed.  Yet she figured there was little chance of getting any answers in the state he was in.  So silence was what she decided on.  A rather uncharacteristic move from her part, but perhaps this little mission was already starting to serve its purpose of making her more mature.

"Alright...I'm ready..."

The female looked hard at him, waiting to see if he'd faint or show any signs of feeling light headed.  But even if he did look like crap right then and there, he seemed to be possessing most of his wits.  Kudos to you.  The smirk that had been thrown her way before he stood up made Satsune however feel a bit... weirded out, as she truly did not know what had been the cause of that expression.  It was almost as if he was gloating over something.  But what?

"That way...right?"

"Yeah."

She gave him one more glance, before allowing him to walk on ahead of her.  Satsune had no way of knowing just how he was doing, so she kept a slow pace and watched the surroundings closely.  Her muscles were ready to spring to action, either to grab the katana or the bow. With each new step, she figured out a new plan to defend against whatever possible attacks they could be under.  Yet after they had walked for a few silent and uneventful minutes, Satsune honestly started to wonder if there was anything watching them at all.  No.. I can feel the hungry stares.  It's giving me the creeps. Making me feel as if I want to scream for hours. Just run out of here.  It was going to be impossible to relax at all in this Forest of Death.  A fitting fucking name for such a retched place.

The grass scrunched almost silently underneath the soles of her boots as the female had started to look around in order to see the wayward Yuki.  They would soon be arriving at the place where her mouse had discovered the strong smell of blood in the air.  Now what exactly would they find? The Yuki alive and well? Would he be gravely injured? Would they perhaps only find a bloodied mass that used to be a human body?

I will strangle his corpse if he's already dead and wasting our time.

She did not allow her thoughts of worry towards the possible poison running through Suzaku's system interfere with the annoyance that was dominant within her mind.

“You’re late”

The voice came from above, making Satsune's head snap upwards like that of a string puppet as she stopped dead in her tracks.  Her ruby red eyes searched the branches that hung heavily above, as she tried to locate the exact spot where the annoying voice had come from. Annoying but very alive voice.  However before she could be done locating anything or anyone, a thud from behind made her turn around. There that prick stood. This bastard who thought it'd be a good idea to split up. I will tie him up and drag him by the hair before I let him wander off again. This place really is not a fucking joke. And I refuse to be eaten.  Wordlessly, cold glances were exchanged between the teens, before the Yuki spoke again.

“What happened to you two?”

A single raised eyebrow indicated that Satsune wanted to ask just the same, as the Yuki looked like he had just stepped out of a gory horror story.

"Suzaku here had to play the hero and got hurt.  A snake bit him and we don't know if it was poisonous or not.  And it wasn't helping the situation that we weren't sure if you were dead or not."

She waved her hand towards the dark haired male at her side, her words bearing an extra harsh tone as she was rather embarrassed to feel herself a bit relieved to be again in a three man team.  She was ... wait, was she honestly happy that everybody were alive and somewhat well?  Bullshit, I just want to get out of here alive and I can't do that alone.  These fucktards can drop dead right after the mission.

"You look like crap.  What kind of an idiot goes off on his own and blows shit up?  Do you know how much attention you have drawn to this place?"

The words were snappy, as she felt truly irritated and almost at the brink of being furious after discovering that these two -idiots- had actually made her feel concerned.  If not for just a split of a second. It was an alien feeling, and rather uncomfortable and mortifying.  With a hasty movement, she started unbuttoning her coat while mumbling about the horrible fate of being surrounded by idiotic males.  But if they were good at 'reading' others, they might have both witnessed that rare moment when a tiny splinter was hacked off the Ice Queen's armour.  Perhaps Suzaku's words had managed to move her a tiny bit?  One could always hope, or dream.. or just wonder.

Move Suzaku. Keep moving.

The mental voice urged the boy forward, forcing him to place one leg in front of the other despite the pain that radiated throughout his very being. Doing his best to stifle the pain filled groans that threatened to escape his throat, the youth felt his jaw clenching while his brows knit themselves into a firm scowl that granted his visage a rather unfriendly appearance. It was a good thing Satsune was behind him and unable to see the expression that was adamantly affixed to his face. He didn't need her worrying about him anymore than she was or worse, ridiculing him. Despite his seemingly friendly demeanor up until now, he was quickly losing his patience. The boy had spent the greater part of their trek mentally chastising himself for allowing things to develop in this manner. The situation was not good and he only had himself to blame. Though he was not the leader, he couldn't help but feel as though he could have prevented most if not all of this. Suzaku was relatively certain that the snake's bite had carried no venom, or if it had said venom hadn't been enough to do any real damage but the fear always linger in the back of his mind, an ever constant worry that ate away at him in a slow and malignant fashion. You'll be fine. Stay focused. Once again he heard the familiar voice urging him forward. He couldn't allow himself to be consumed by worry. They had a job to do; a job that was at the moment, going very poorly.

Pushing those thoughts aside, Suzaku found his amber hues slowly scanning the area as they continued to move. It didn't take long for the young shinobi to notice the progressive disorganized and disheveled appearance the forest seemed to take the further the pair moved. Suzaku soon found his steps slowing as he veered off their intended path, moving toward one of the toppled trees, the roots of which were fully exposed to the outside air. Suzaku paused, his eyes scanning over the fallen structure before moving toward the roots. With a small sigh he'd reach forward, his bloody hand wrapping around one of the easier to reach appendages. The boy remained silent as his hand proceeded to grip then slide along the slender body, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the dirt below. Still moist and the dirt around this area was recently disturbed. Judging by how green the leaves are, this tree hasn't been like this long. Something knocked this thing over not too long ago. I have a bad feeling about this. I really hope Masamori didn't run into whatever did this. Without a word Suzaku would turn to glance back at Satsune, silently motioning for her to continue as he resumed walking, picking up his pace in response to his growing anxiety. He truly hoped Masamori hadn't been injured or worse...

Walking at this new speed, it wouldn't take the two long to come to the scene of the battle; though long before then Suzaku's sensitive nose had already managed to catch the trace scent of burned flesh. The fragrance was slight but still present, lingering ever so slightly in the air due to the presence of the large carcass that sat not too far ahead of them. Upon reaching the corpse the youth's eyes couldn't help but be drawn to the downed creature; or what was left of it. The creatures feasting on the deceased beast did not escape Suzaku's notice. Immediately the boy felt his body reflexively dropping low, moving into a crouch, once again pausing as he felt the familiar and unpleasant pain radiating throughout his body. The intensity of such nearly causing him to yelp. Once again the boy found his jaw muscles clenching, his teeth grinding harshly against one another as he suppressed the urge, forcing his body to move forward quickly and quietly as to not draw the attention of the feasting monstrosities before them.

It wasn't until Suzaku managed to catch sight of the bloodied clothing at the base of a rather large tree that he found himself rising, his anxiety filled mind pushing out the worry of being detected by the scavenging creatures behind them and replacing it with concern over his old friend. Working quickly, Suzaku analyzed the scene, quickly noticing how no traces of his friend remained beyond the blood that stained the shirt. Surely if he had been devoured and this was all that remained there would be more. Bones, hair, torn flesh. There was no way that the animals of this forest were that thorough. There was no reason for wild beasts to bother with the indigestible bits. Years of hunting would have taught any competent predator what to take and what to leave. All this ran through the boy's mind quickly, his analysis serving to calm his nerves only a split second before he heard the familiar voice calling out to them from above. Going wide-eyed, Suzaku's head snapped, his gaze shifting away from the shirt yet not going up but behind him and Satsune in an effort to check on the animals not too far behind him. Was Masamori insane?! Suzaku felt his features hardening, the concern that had once been clear on his face quickly vanished as a new expression took hold, one of frustration and disapproval as his old friend seemingly dropped into his field of vision from above, taking a moment to assess the diminutive duo before inquiring about their current state. “What happened to you two?”

Suzaku sighed, a mixture of relief and frustration filled his chest as his eyes quickly rolled over his bare chested comrade, noting that, aside from a couple of bruises and scrapes, he was no worse for ware.

"Nice to see you too."

Suzaku made no attempt to hide the irritation in his voice as his eyes now made their way back toward the group of monsters behind his friend, watching as they continued to feast away at the large avian carcass that the raven haired youth could only surmise was brought down by Masamori. The boy had to admit, he was impressed, though his features did little to show it. His eyes only broke away from the scene, drifting in Satsune's direction as she spoke up. "Suzaku here had to play the hero and got hurt.  A snake bit him and we don't know if it was poisonous or not.  And it wasn't helping the situation that we weren't sure if you were dead or not."

"I'm fine. No point in worrying about that now. We should just be glad we're all alive for the time being."

Again, the frustration in Suzaku's tone was all too obvious. The carefree manner in which he had spoke in earlier was no where to be found. The pain had begun to take its toll on the youth and despite his desire to wave off any potential concern, he was doing a lousy job at masking how he felt. "You look like crap.  What kind of an idiot goes off on his own and blows shit up?  Do you know how much attention you have drawn to this place?" Once again Suzaku found his eyes drifting toward the fallen bird, his gaze focusing on the group of grotesque and intimidating beasts that surrounded and feasted upon it.

"Come on, this is not the place to have a conversation. It's only a matter of time before those things decide that they want something a bit fresher than charred monster. We can talk once we're safe."

Without another word the shorter male would begin to walk, heading back in the direction from whence he and Satsune had came, feeling secure in knowing the path they had traveled was most likely safe or at the very least relatively so.

[OOC: I’m so sorry for this being late! I didn’t get a notification from it! And that’s what I rely on… never mind. Here goes. *prepares self for the rusty writing*]

If only the ebony-haired woman had known what kinds of disasters would unfold slowly, one by one, in the Forest of Death. She would have never set the test to be in such a dangerous place if she had been aware of the drastic events that started a domino effect, worsening in intensity and sheer volume by the second. Kimiko kept a close watch on the forest, her feline ears and adjusted nose twitching rapidly to not only listen for danger, but to also smell it as well. As a common rule of thumb, the more dangerous the animal, the more potent their scent seemed to be. It was especially true when considering which animals were poisonous and which ones weren’t. She wasn’t particularly concerned by the snake approaching Satsune and Suzaku for the simple reason that it wasn’t poisonous, she realised as much from looking at its markings and not picking up on a potent poison-laced scent. Apart from its size, it wasn’t too much of a threat. As for the bird that had hurtled towards Masamori, the same rule applied. The typical bird brain wasn’t too intelligent, and was instead fixated on feeding itself. Not an intelligent enemy by any stretch of the imagination. She slowly crouched down onto her haunches on the wide tree branch, arms resting over her thighs and dangling loosely past her knees while her feline senses worked overtime to ensure the safety of her students. Everything was looking to be okay thus far on both sides (she inwardly cursed the group splitting up, because every observation she made on each side was delayed due to the time it took to switch between both wide distances), with no major issues. No injuries. Just them realising that this was a challenge that they had yet to face in their young lives, which was no bad thing. But as the Hokage would most likely chirp to them, adaptability was a shinobi’s greatest tool. It was all well and good being highly trained in your specific specialties, but if you couldn’t back it up with the ability to adapt and change strategies for survival purposes, they’d soon perish. Growing up, this young woman was a literal laughing stock in the Academy and as a Genin for her lack in skill, but somehow she always managed to survive. She came back stronger, sporting battle scars and stories, but it was better than not returning.

Having gone through the whole phase as a child of ‘playing the hero’ (as Kimiko used to be quite known for in her younger years), she knew how dangerous it could be if you didn’t have the skill to back up such strong claims and actions. She was hoping that her students wouldn’t make the same mistakes she had made, up until… well, she got quite the shock and all her hopes were dashed when she watched Suzaku step up to tight the snake. Her heart felt as if it stopped beating in her chest for a second or so when the snake latched itself onto the boy’s arm, and amazingly, protrusions of sharp bone shot from him. ‘A Kaguya?’ She thought to herself in sheer shock, feeling literally staggered by the revelation. Oh yes, she knew the bloodline very well indeed with her own adoptive brother being of the strange strain that could use their bones for combat purposes. Her brain raced through Suzaku’s profile, however, and she couldn’t recall his surname being ‘Kaguya’ or any of his characteristics matching the typical user of the Kekkei Genkai. How bizarre. Her ears twitched and managed to lock onto the boy’s words as he had literally defended his team mate from meeting a sticky end of her own, and this too managed to surprise her. Somehow it felt as if she was looking at a male version of herself from many years ago, when she was his age of fifteen and facing down two Nukenin that would have overpowered her if not for her literal inability to give up.

She raised a hand to her face and pinched the bridge of her nose sharply, eyes shutting for a brief second or so as she sighed deeply, realising that this whole exercise was slowly becoming a disaster; especially when she heard a loud explosion coming from the last location she remembered seeing Masamori. The area was surrounded in a cloud of smoke, and she knew that he had detonated an exploding tag, most likely, to help himself deal with his own opponent. After inspecting the area a little further, opening her eyes and leaning forward as much as possible on the tree branch without falling off, she turned back to find that Suzaku and Satsune were beginning to backtrack, seemingly heading for their team mate’s location. Now that the smoke was clearing, Kimiko could see her Yuki student and wasn’t surprised by his state. After wrangling with a huge bird and having to detonate an exploding tag (probably in close proximity to himself) it was unsurprising. She pushed herself back up to her full height and ran a hand back through her long ebony locks, pushing at a few bangs to put them behind her ears. She started to descent the tree she had climbed up, starting by leaping and allowing herself to free fall until she hit the next level of tree canopies beneath her. Her hands shot up and grasped onto branches as her body twisted to avoid obstacles in her way, swinging through the treetops with a quick haste, following her nose for guidance of where to find her blood-soaked team mates. They were a walking meat feast, considering how bad the stench was, especially around Suzaku. If she allowed her consciousness to disappear/ ‘go on autopilot mode’ her lioness instincts brought out by her current jutsu would probably alert her to the meal up ahead, which was disturbing in itself. She had to get the disastrous trio out of this forest, and quickly, plus get them all to the Hospital to get them checked out. From what she had seen, Satsune hadn’t sustained too much damage, but that didn’t mean to say that she should take that as law. A thorough examination and healing process was required for Suzaku and Masamori, it went without saying. She released the last branch and dropped down to the middle section of a line of trees, instead starting to dash through the trees in a full-on sprint. Her body was nothing more than a blur as she hurtled out of the trees and landed on the ground not far from the secret Kaguya and the Ink-user, having controlled her landing into an animalistic crouch.

It would probably come as a shock to the trio that she had turned into more lion than human, except from her usual humanly gait and posture. Her long ebony locks remained the same, but everything else was different; as in, covered in sandy-coloured fur. And her eyes were wide, bright and amber-coloured. That, coupled with how claws had grown long and dangerous on each of her fingertips and toes, the latter being visible due to her black sandals showing them, and fangs protruding over her bottom lip made her quite the… interesting sight at present. “The task is, undeniably, terminated.” She stated, already making ushering motions back to where one of the gates was situated in the Forest of Death, aiming to get them out as soon as possible. “We’ll get you all to the Hospital and talk later. Hate me all you want for this, but I think you know more so than I that serious training is in order to right some very fundamental wrongs.” She stated crisply, her nose twitching noticeably and her eyes widening a little at the realisation. “Hurry!” She hissed, having caught whiff of a very large predator heading straight for their current location, obviously excited by the smell of fresh meat simply waiting for them like sitting ducks. Even if they had moved at insane speeds, however, the hunters currently stalking them were much faster and reached them first. Out of the undergrowth behind them, a huge pack of super-sized monstrosities burst forth, growling, snarling and snapping their jaws at them. What they were was hard to pinpoint exactly, but they were visibly a hybrid between a Direwolf and some form of bear, each one super-sized to epic proportions. They gave Kimiko’s immense lion summon, Aslan, a run for his money. And what worried the Hokage was that she had not yet seen these creatures in the forest, meaning they were a new species and she had no idea of what they could do. Safe to say, she would be facing these alone.

She moved forward to put herself between her students and the huge creatures (of which there were probably about six or seven), briefly turning her head to look at the trio with an entirely serious gaze. “You three need to get out of here, they’re attracted by the smell of your blood. Run back to where we came from and get through the gate, bar and lock it after you and don’t wait. Get to the Hospital. Get your respective wounds treated.” She ordered, hoping upon hope that the three of them actually listened to her this time, that all of them turned and ran to safety. Having told them as such, it seemed that the leader of the pack was growing impatient and tried to push its way past Kimiko to get at the fresh smell of lovely blood. Her head snapped round to focus on the hybrid creature, eyes narrowing and a low, animalistic snarl ripping from the back of her throat. Her dominant right arm shot up from her side, hand extended with her fingers all pressed together close to create an edge of sorts, swinging it round to impact with the side of the creature’s huge neck. The strength of the strike made it stagger and buckle on its otherwise quite steady legs, falling to a crouch as she rounded on it again, left foot pivoting madly as her body spun and lunged to close the very short distance between where she had been stood and where the beast had almost fallen, springing into the air like only a feline could. She flipped in mid-air so that she was facing where her students were hopefully gathered and/ or already fleeing (which she hoped was happening at present), and came down hard atop the creature’s skull which further stunned it. Taking advantage of the precious seconds she had perched there, one of the four seals on her forearms started to glow as she released from it her Nodachi, a fearsomely long blade that she wielded with one strong hand to come down through the back of the beast’s neck, using the strike as leverage to leap from the leader’s head by vaulting herself using the handle of her blade. She landed with a controlled skid back where she had been stood, acting as a barrier between the beasts and her students, not perturbed by their size or the sheer number. Having slain the ‘leader’, the creatures didn’t even seem fazed. All they wanted was their next meal. They began their charge, all at once, in the hope of getting further than the one annoying human standing in their way. None of them would get past if she could help it.

Extra: These things not only look intimidating, but they have the raw strength and power to back it up. Their claws are rock-solid and capable of ripping through most materials with ease, let alone the average flesh on prey animals. They rely heavily on their sense of smell and their hearing, which means that their eyesight is not entirely up to par. Contrary to the picture description, the lot that have confronted the Hokage and her students are rather deformed; probably due to the species mutation that has occurred. Their ears are flat to their heads and areas around their eyes are mottled. But their teeth are equally sharp, and they have two sets; the front set, and the back set. Stay clear at all costs and try to reach safety... if you can.

The Last Spark?
Suzaku’s and Satsune’s response were partially expected. The Yuki felt that he could guess what the other two would say even though the three had barely known each other. Well, arguably Suzaku and Masamori knew each other very well if one didn’t count the two year gap that had alienated them far more than the youth would have guessed it would. Regardless it seemed that now, his old ex-friend was always eager to show off his new found coolness. He was the ragged rebel, smoking and drinking like a champ, saying “fuck you” to responsibility and duty; he was the distant, mysterious guy in the group. Satsune on the other hand was the cold, malicious one, always eager to throw in a sarcastic remark or a threat. Yet, neither seemed too capable of maintaining these personas. What had changed in the last few hours?

Well, apparently, Suzaku had been brought to heel somewhat. In fact, Masamori had experienced the same thing, but it wasn’t as evident. It must have been the serious wound that Suzaku had sustained or maybe it was the frustration and tiredness which plagued him, which made him more bearable. Or perhaps less so. He was still trying to take the lead after all, but at least now, he emanated a need to be protected and this need made him lose some of that tough guy, devil may cry image that he tried to project.

Satsune on the other hand, had seemingly lost some of her bite and poison. She was definitely less tongue and cheek, and for once, she appeared to care about her teammates. Or maybe that was a crafty illusion; maybe she was afraid that their ill-being would result in her own death. Whatever the case, it surprised the Yuki to see this change in her demeanour. Well, the change was only really evident momentarily, but still, maybe the forest had been good for her. For Suzaku too. Imagine what sort of results could be achieved, if the two were left in the Forests for days! Heck, Masamori would have a functioning and reliable team by the end of that experiment.

“Sorry” he replied simply, tiredness also showing in his voice. The boost of adrenaline that he had underwent when he believed he was under threat, was now quickly subsiding, leaving his body once more sore and uncooperative. “I wasn’t trying to make you worry” the youth added, his eyes looking at Satsune before they dropped to the floor, as if in a symbolical, apologetic bow.

“An explosion seemed like the only way of avoiding being that thing’s dinner” the youth explained, motioning at the carcass. “But Suzaku is right. We need to move before those things get tired of roast chicken-“ the youth began to say, but his voice all but stopped when a ‘thing’ dropped from the sky, much like he had done, landing dangerously close to the group. Was it another enemy?

The sudden sight of a humanoid lion-esque figure was in equal parts terrifying and amusing. It took a few seconds for Masamori’s eyes to identify the Hokage’s features under and around the coat of golden, puffy fur that had spread across her body, but it was definitely her! Sure enough, the big cuddly cat thing was their sensei – of course it was... What a ridiculous thing to see after a near-death fight with some strange, unrealistic bird-like monstrosity. Had the Yuki not known better, he would have figured that he was experiencing a dream, a dream that was now spiralling out of control and exploring some very weird ideas. Was there any significance in dreaming about women-cats? Maybe it was a good thing it wasn’t a dream. A psychiatrist might have told him he had a strange furry fetish. Now that’s not exactly a thing one wants to break to their family during dinner.

The Hokage had been apparently monitoring her team all this time, and was unhappy with their progress. The unhappiness was surely exaggerated, was it not? No one had died, Satsune seemed completely fine, Masamori only needed a few more minutes to get all the feeling back in his body and, well, Suzaku perhaps needed some medical attention. Surely, it wasn’t so bad. What did she expect to happen in the Forest of Death? From what the boy had been told by his kinsmen, people of higher rank, got wounded often and heavily. Some even died. Thus far, a few hours in, the group had only sustained a single noticeable injury. Surely, they were doing a good enough job, no?

But there seemed to be no arguing with the woman. She pushed them on, urging the trio to leave as soon as possible. Truthfully, Masamori was still too out of it to put up a verbal argument and in any case he needed all his strength to walk on, under her stern gaze and her pressing voice. Like a little child, he grimaced quietly to himself, half-tempted to cross his arms and silently told himself that the woman was wrong in her assessment and that this was all ‘bullshit’.

And then she hissed “Hurry” and things got out of hand quickly. One didn’t need to have especially acute senses to notice the mini-earthquake that seemed to originate from behind them. It was as if a giant was marching in their direction, or perhaps, multiple smaller-giants, in unison. Surely that’s why she seemed so tense all of a sudden. Ironically, Masamori couldn’t help but stop some steps behind her and perhaps that was a mistake for, what he saw, he did not like. Neither did his gut.

The bird that attacked him had surely been at least the same size of these bear-wolf creatures that had shown up, and yet, where the bird had been flying solo, instead they were now to face a pack of savage, crazed monsters. As she explained, they were attracted to the blood on Suzaku’s and Masamori’s bodies, and it seemed she was the only thing that could stop them. NO WAY! What sort of Konoha shinobi could let their Hokage fight such a danger on her own? If something happened to her, the three would be held responsible, considered traitors even, or at the very least, shameful cowards. They had to help her. It was their duty, as underlings and students.

The welcome, now-familiar boost of adrenaline coursed through his veins. Masamori watched his sensei in awe, as she dispatched what seemed like the leader of the pack. Then he saw his chance to contribute. Like a wild, angered waterfall, the whole pack sought to cascade upon the woman, as if one entity, seeking to crush her with the sheer momentum that they amassed. The youth wasn’t going to let that happen. Expertly, his hands had attached an explosive tag to a kunai, and within seconds he had launched the small dagger, awaiting for it to get as close to the pack as possible, before he finally detonated it with a loud, snarl-like “Kai”. The beasts, though undamaged, scattered all around the team, at the sound and sight of the explosion. The youth identified the monster that was the most separated and closest to him and ran at it, his naginata raised. With one hand, the boy raced through a number of hand seals, with the beasts’ eyes now focused on him and its fangs showing, as its feet dug in to the ground, muscles tightened, its large mass almost ready to charge at the little sack of meat, which Masamori was. But the youth was one step ahead.

With the seals completed, a large body of water materialised above the wolf’s head, engulfing it wholly. This moment of confusion was all Masamori needed, giving him precious seconds. He launched himself from the ground, both of his hands now raising the blade in the air, as he came crashing down upon the now-angered, but still thankfully dazed beast. The sword sank into the fur, flesh and muscle, as if it was all butter, only stopping at the bone. However an almighty, desperate push from the boy's upper body allowed the metal to cleave through bone also, sinking deep into the beast’s head. If Masamori had thought that was it however, he was wrong...

A claw had hit him from the side suddenly, flinging his body with childish ease, as if he was made of sponge. He crashed into a tree, or perhaps two, his lungs bereft of oxygen. His sword had been left in the head of the beast, a beast that was now going rampage. Whatever he had hit inside that head, and maybe it was even the brain, it had surely meant the wolf’s end. Maybe it meant his own end too... As he slid down to the ground, barely putting out his hands to limit his fall, he felt blood welling up in his mouth and couldn't so much as feel any part of his body. He felt broken... and surely enough, a cough, a cough that felt strange, almost new as if he had never coughed before, produced the familiar thick, red liquid. He tried to speak, but couldn’t. The oxygen was still driven out; his lungs were still in shock. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw blood protruding from another part of his body. He must have been flung onto a branch and the sheer force had had him impaled. Hopefully that’s all it was, he thought...

Meanwhile, as the youth lay, near unconscious, the damaged beast reeled into another wolf, which had been so focused on the Hokage and the danger she presented, that it didn’t notice its brother’s body crashing into him before it was too late. The two had fallen awkwardly, luckily for the shinobi, with the wounded animal crushing his kin with its weight.

These two unlikely deaths heralded the end of Masamori’s contribution to this fight.

He smiled faintly, as his eyes closed wearily...

Satsune certainly agreed with Suzaku that they needed to start getting the fuck out of there.  Earlier she hadn't noticed the charred bird meat was drawing attention, but now she was starting to see and hear some rather disturbing creatures closing in on the scene where the half cooked corpse lay not too far away from the teens.  This is starting to get ridiculous.  How was this location ever going to be good for simple genin training when they hadn't even trained together before?  The Forest of Death was something used to determine Chuunin ranks, not really something Satsune had visualized as the place where she would learn more about her team members.  They had no way of knowing how to work together, as they hardly even knew each other by name.  And let's not forget the fact that there was little love between the three youngsters.  Can we even keep going at this rate?  Masamori looked like he had gone through a meat grinder, and there was always the snake bite to worry about when it came to Suzaku.  Plus the fact that he had just recently discovered his Kaguya ability, and still seemed a bit shaky.

Yeah this is completely fucked.

She took a step to one side, then a step to the other.  Her mouth was dry and felt icky after the violent vomiting earlier, and her entire body felt sticky and dirty from sweat and mud and various other things she might have gotten on herself from that stupid forest.  I want to go home.  Right about now.  But then there was the question of where their Sensei was hiding.  Obviously the woman was going to be observing them closely ... or so Satsune hoped at least.  She didn't know if she secretly possessed some sort of a mind-power, but the female found herself looking at her Sensei just seconds after annoyingly wondering where the older woman was.

What the?

Satsune at least -thought- it was her Sensei.  And hoped it wasn't some ... were...wolf..lion..-thing- that was standing in front of them.  Squinting her eyes, the female looked over the creature that had the same ebony locks as the Hokage yet was now covered with sandy fur and had amber eyes.  I've never seen anything like this before.  It would be a lie to say that she didn't feel interested and impressed, yet the young teen managed to keep her cool and her expression remained for the most part neutral.  What did it mean now that the Sensei had appeared?

“The task is, undeniably, terminated.”

A mixture of relief, surprise and disappointment swirled within the mind of Satsune.  She wanted to get out of there, that was true enough.  She needed to desperately clean herself and burn the clothes she was currently wearing.  A toothbrush would also be welcomed, along with a comb.  Yet she was a bit taken back that the Hokage would stop this mission so quickly and easily.  Perhaps her team mates were more hurt than she would have guessed.  Or maybe the Hokage knew of something that was about to happen.  And then she was left with that strange feeling of disappointment.  Satsune wanted to finish this mission, show that she was capable of completing it and proving to her team mates, the Hokage and herself that she was strong and very capable.

“We’ll get you all to the Hospital and talk later. Hate me all you want for this, but I think you know more so than I that serious training is in order to right some very fundamental wrongs.”

Oh well, it can't be helped.  Her ambition and need to prove herself to others didn't run deeper than that.  The strong urge for cleanliness won over any other emotion running through her, and so she decided to simply agree with the Hokage.  However it didn't seem like they would get unscathed away from that location.  As Satsune had feared, more and more predators were lured in to the smell of blood and meat.  As the female looked at the lion-hybrid of a Hokage, she noticed that the woman had been alarmed by something that was probably above the normal human senses to pick up on.

"Hurry!"

The Hokage didn't have to tell Satsune twice to get moving.  A startled gasp escaped the female as she heard a loud rumbling and she felt the ground literally shake underneath her feet as something -big- was coming their way.  Snapping her head to the side, her crimson coloured orbs took in the new enemies that approached.  What is that?? Her mind seemed to barely manage to grasp the monstrosity that was before her, before adrenaline burst through her veins and made her almost start feeling dizzy.

“You three need to get out of here, they’re attracted by the smell of your blood. Run back to where we came from and get through the gate, bar and lock it after you and don’t wait. Get to the Hospital. Get your respective wounds treated.”

Gladly.  This was not a moment to start acting like a hero.  The Hokage needed her space to be able to use her techniques as she best could, and Satsune doubted that three incompetent genin could do anything but be in the way.  Plus she really did not feel interested in being killed today.  And so, she started running, running as fast as she possibly could. I am -not- dying here.  Not a chance.  Her katana snapped and bit at undergrowth and branches that were in her way, whilst the female pushed her slender body forward.  It wasn't until she had sprinted over a decent amount of ground, that she noticed that she was alone.  Wait.  There was already the sounds of fighting behind her, and as the female turned to look back she absolutely couldn't believe what she was seeing.

"Those fucking idiots!"

Why was it that males were always compelled to act out the 'hero role'?  Masamori was engaged in the fight already, and impressively seemed to have gotten one of the beasts; yet he paid the price for that.  I can't believe this stupid fucker would go and do whatever he wants AGAIN.  As she thought that, and kept going on with a string of curses inside of her own mind; Satsune had already gotten out a scroll and started painting on it.  Instantly two proud lions of the impressive size of 220 pounds each and body length of more than 2 meters appeared next to her.  The female grabbed onto the scruffy mane of one lion and swung up on its back.  There was no time to think or hesitate any longer, and however much she wanted to just keep going and leave the others for their own fate; Satsune turned back.  Her ink creations ran so fast it seemed like they flew over the ground, and as they were nearing the fight; Satsune sheathed her katana.

The Hokage was doing a good job of holding the creatures back, and as Satsune neared Masamori where he lay bloodied and lifeless on the ground, she tried to spot Suzaku as well.  Not that she cared or anything .... There was little hope of seeing the male as everything was being quite chaotic, but for a flash she thought she saw his dark hair and immediately turned to the other lion at her side.  "Go.  Help him."  Suzaku was smart, he would most probably notice that this lion had the similar structure and colour as her mice from earlier, so even if he wouldn't see Satsune on the other lion, he could at least assume this one was there to help him.  The lion would run swiftly to the side of the boy, and depending on his actions; do what he would want it do to.  Even if the creature held no chakra abilities it still had the size, claws and fangs to easily become lethal to an opponent. Or a good distraction and means of transportation.

In the meantime, Satsune used to her advantage that the battle was too busy for anyone to really notice her presence, and she instructed the lion to grab at Masamori's clothing with its teeth before swinging him onto its back in front of Satsune where she could hold him tightly. However much she disliked that. By sheer willpower only was she able to not kick him off again and just leave.  "Hokage, I will take him back.  He's not dead but needs immediate help."  The female yelled the words out, hoping that the Hokage had the heightened hearing of a lion as well as the looks, and would be able to make out Satsune's words over the loud sounds of the battle.  She then bent forward, holding tightly onto the limp body of the male in front of her, as she tightened her legs around the lion underneath her; which in return immediately bounded forward and headed towards the gates.  Satsune could have made more animals and used her ability to let them explode, yet she didn't dare do that for fear of catching her other team mate and her Hokage within the blast.

What was it with her worrying over others suddenly?

[Exit.]

Dire Consequences: Team 2 and their Test [C] [Chris, PolarBear, TOPKite] Vide
PostSubject: Re: Dire Consequences: Team 2 and their Test [C] [Chris, PolarBear, TOPKite] Dire Consequences: Team 2 and their Test [C] [Chris, PolarBear, TOPKite] EmptyMon 21 Apr 2014, 3:59 pm

Suzaku's heart pounded in his chest at the sight of the large beasts racing toward them. All previous thoughts about the Hokage's unusual appearance or his apprehension at having their training mission prematurely terminated had vanished by this point, the only emotion growing within him being pure and unadulterated fear. The boy felt his body trembling as it refused to move, even at the Hokage's command. Though his mind knew her word to be law, his body did not. The boy was left helpless to watch as the largest of the beasts attempted to make its way in his direction. With wide amber hues the boy watched as the woman, who's strength he had questioned only hours ago, single handedly slapped the beast aside, sending the monster reeling and stumbling giving the woman time to execute an impressive aerial maneuver that not only further stunned the creature but bought the Fire Shadow enough time to deliver a swift yet gruesome coup de grâce.

Once finished Suzaku found himself now staring in wonder, only vaguely aware of the fast approaching pack that now charged for his leader, obviously angered by her display of brutal efficiency. It was only then that Suzaku's body seemed to catch up with his mind, realizing the danger he and his team were in. We have to get out of here! The thought was enough to motivate his body to move once more. With the gift of mobility restored the boy spun around on his heels, making a dash for the tree lines as he managed to catch the fleeting sight of his female team member rushing through the dense foliage of the forest, cutting a clean path with her sword; a path which Suzaku had intended to follow. Despite his plans however, the boy's form froze once more as the sound of an explosion tore through the tension filled air. Again the boy spun around, his eyes wide as he stared at the pack of beasts as they seemed to scatter in all directions, seemingly spooked by the explosion, at least enough to pause in their forward charge, giving both the Hokage and her team a few more precious seconds to act. What Suzaku saw next though left him almost speechless as Masamori charged forward in what seemed like a half-brained attempt to prove himself to both his team and the Hokage.

Watching in horror, Suzaku felt himself struggling to keep from crying out in protest as he watched the scene unfold. What was he doing?! Why was he fighting? And why was he charging them  head on?! The world seemed to slow down for the young genin as he watched his old friend connect with his downward cleave, only to be flung like a rag doll into a distant tree, his body making a sickening thud as he collided with the sturdy trunk. Suzaku watched as Masamori managed to catch himself, spewing crimson liquid with each labored breath before collapsing completely.

"He's not moving..."

Suzaku's voice choked weakly before turning his gaze back toward the creatures, seeing the immediate effects of his comrade's work. Suzaku once again felt his body refusing to move. What was he supposed to do?! Grabbing his injured friend wasn't a viable option. Even if the boy managed to reach Masamori, he wasn't strong enough to carry the Yuki boy while outrunning or out maneuvering these beast, should any manage to get past their leader. The fear filled thought of simply running to save his own hide quickly surfaced. He could have ran, leaving Masamori and Kimiko to fend for themselves. While he was fairly confident the Hokage could take care of herself, he knew that Masamori was defenseless and with his near lifeless body lying so close, it would only make Kimiko's job harder. Could she really manage to distract all these creatures by herself? Perhaps. But Suzaku didn't think it very wise to find out. Still, what could he do? Fighting a single overgrown snake was one thing, but several of these beasts at once? Doubt and fear once again crept into the back of the boy's mind. "One should never draw their weapon unless they intend to kill...or to protect that which is precious to them."

Suzaku felt his eyes narrowing slightly as his father's words from so long ago echoed within his mind. The distant memory cause a pang of guilt to resonate heavily within the young man's chest, shame filling his heart as he regretted even thinking about running at a time like this. Gritting his teeth Suzaku brought his hand up, forming a quick set of three seals before suddenly sinking into the earth as if his very body had lost any sense of its physical aspect. One moment he had been there and in the next he was gone, safely tucked underground and unbeknownst to all on the surface, moving quickly under the earth like a prarie dog scurrying through its complex network of tunnels, making a beeline for the beast that was closest to Masamori's position. Without warning the boy's sword suddenly shot up through the earth, stabbing right through the beast's front right paw. Reflexively the creature drew back it foot, jumping and rearing up on it's hind legs much like a horse as the katana remained planted through its front paw due to Suzaku having released his hold on it's grip only after the blade had impaled the beast's limb.

Refusing to remain still, Suzaku continued his journey for a bit longer, emerging behind the creature by launching himself in the air, breaking through the earth in a seemingly dramatic fashion, both Ninjato and bowie knife drawn and wielded in a reverse grip style; ninjato in the left and knife in the right and what looked to be a crumpled piece of paper held firmly between his teeth. For only a second Suzaku soared through the air toward the beast's exposed back, his grip around his weapons tightening as he brought both up over his head then down, sinking both blades into the flesh of his over sized opponent. The beast yelped and began to run, circling round and round like a dog chasing it's tale as it tried to use it's jaw to bite Suzaku's flailing body. Moving his foot, Suzaku kicked outwards, sending his striking limb straight into the creature's nose, causing it to yelp further, stunning it slightly as Suzaku yanked his bowie knife from the beast's flesh, putting all his weight down on the ninjato before reaching as far as he could with his right arm before slamming the knife down into the creature's back again only to pull his ninjato out in the same fashion, extending then stabbing. In this way Suzaku quickly scaled up the creature's back as it thrashed about, howling in pain. It didn't take long for Suzaku to reach the beasts head, his right hand quickly releasing the handle of his knife, leaving it embedded in the beast's neck as he reached toward the piece of paper in his mouth. Spitting it into his hand he'd slap the moist tag firmly to the back of the beasts skull before quickly pulling his knife and ninjato from the beowulf's flesh, using his legs to kick off and away from the creature, landing several meters away in a harsh tumble. Quickly writing himself the boy would release both weapons, letting them fall to his sides as he formed a quick seal, not bothering to say anything as he glared at his victim.

In the next instant another explosion would sound off, echoing through the forest as the creature's head seemed to collapse in on itself, the force of the explosion tearing a hole through the beast's flesh and fracturing the skull, incapacitating the monster and causing it to fall into a heap a good fifteen meters from Masamori's former location. Noticing that Masamori's body was now nowhere to be seen Suzaku began to look around frantically, catching sight of not only Satsune riding off on a lion but also another of the smaller beasts beginning to give chase, not willing to let such a seemingly easy meal go free. Suzaku's hands quickly went for his two short blades, grabbing them and desperately sprinting in an attempt to catch the beast, quickly realizing the effort was a futile one as the disparity in their speed seemed too great. Already Suzaku felt himself short of breath, the effects of losing so much blood earlier in the day now catching up to him. When all hope seemed lost however, the beast was suddenly tackled by what looked to be a black lion of sorts. At first the boy found himself slowing down, not knowing what to make of the situation, but it didn't take him long to see the similarities this lion had held with Satsune's mice she had summoned earlier and how it looked almost identical to the creature she had been riding off, carrying Masamori's unconscious form.

"Smart girl..."

Suzaku muttered to himself as he started to charge forward again, knowing full well that Satsune's lion wouldn't be able to hold its own for long now that it had lost the element of surprise. Just as he predicted, the lion itself was easily taken down, held firmly between the jaws of the Beowulf, only to explode in an inky mess as the monster chomped down. The ink explosion and the smell and taste it carried caused the beast to freeze momentarily as its senses became overwhelmed. That moment was all Suzaku needed as he quickly dropped his ninjato, left hand reaching into his pouch to grab two explosive tags, slapping them on the handle of his bowie knife as he continued to charge forward. He'd suddenly come to a skidding stop, throwing the blade forward in mid slide before bringing his hands up to form another set of seals.

The knife would sail through the air, end over end, planting itself firmly into the back of the creature's left hind leg, prompting the beast to turn around just in time to see Suzaku sink into the earth once more. In the next moment Suzaku's hands would burst through the earth, grabbing the beast's front left leg and quickly dragging it underground, burying it momentarily in the earth, temporarily immobilizing the small Beowulf. Acting quickly Suzaku emerged from the earth much like before, though this time leaping backwards and away from the creature's mouth as he formed another series of three seals. Upon completion he'd land hard on the ground, punching the dirt, causing his chakra to channel through the earth and toward the beast's buried paw. Suddenly the creature would howl in pain as the ground around his limb would harden and tighten, the dirt becoming stone like in consistency as it began to grind the poor limb, crushing it.

Though it didn't take long for the monster to free its paw, the damage, for the most part, was done. As the creature began to make it's way toward Suzaku in a limping fashion, the boy suddenly formed another seal with his hands, causing the two tags on the creature's hind leg to detonate, once more causing it to yelp in agony before toppling over onto it's left side, having lost the strength in both left limbs. Not wanting to miss his opportunity, Suzaku formed yet another set of seals. As he finished the earth next to him began to materialize, forming a carbon copy of himself that immediately raced forward then arced out to the creature's left, circling around the snapping jaw and thrusting his right hand forward as though to punch. At the last moment however a blade would spring forward from the clone's wrist, impaling the creature through it's right eye, pressing hard to sink the weapon further inward. The creature would begin to thrash about, throwing the clone off to the side, causing it to disperse upon impact with the ground. As this occurred Suzaku himself ran forward, using the distraction to strike at an opening left under the creature's jaw, thrusting his own hidden wrist mounted blade straight for the monster's throat, leaving a gaping and bleeding hole. Dragging his weapon down the exposed neck, Suzaku widened the cut before trying to leap back, though he was not left entirely unscathed as one of the flailing limbs of the beast managed to connect, sending the boy tumbling across the ground. The hit had hurt but it had by no means been debilitating due to the fact that the beowulf had been so badly injured and in an awkward position.

Groaning lightly, Suzaku moved his hand over his injured torso, his breathing heavy as he turned his gaze toward the Hokage, checking to see how she was handling the rest of the pack and gauging whether it was a good time for him to retreat now that Masamori and Satsune were safe. With a small grunt he'd try to stand, struggling to do so as his entire body felt as though it were made of lead, his muscles seemingly refusing to listen to his mental commands at this point.

‘One down… six more to go…’ The ebony-haired woman thought rather grimly to herself, her eyes narrowing on the beasts as they all started their charge towards her. Her hands were hastily brought up to her chest, already flashing through familiar seals and her chest slowly expanding and moulding Katon chakra there. The technique was cut short, however, when she became aware of a flash of clothing moving swiftly, and her chocolate orbs widened in surprise. She almost literally staggered back, having just seen her Yuki student hurling himself forward to join the fray. “Masamori, what on earth are you doing?!” She bellowed at the youth, feeling panic well up in her system at the very sight. He could be severely injured, or worse, killed. These were not the run-of-the mill animals here in the Forest of Death; that much was obvious. Kimiko didn’t even know that these things existed, so they were suitably dangerous and strong to have flourished so quickly from the last time she had entered this place. It didn’t bode well, not at all. A beast obscured her view and blocked her way to the dark-haired youth who was now doing his part in the fight, making her hiss loudly in sheer irritation and desperation, watching as she was being partly surrounded due to them assessing her as the bigger threat. Suddenly, an explosion sounded out of nowhere, and it was then that the Hokage knew what her student was trying to do. Scatter the beasts. It worked well enough, all of them sent reeling from the loud, harsh sound and the destructive power that went with it. Now that the creatures had cleared from her immediate view, she saw just in time how Masamori had let his guard down for half a second and was swiped aside. The blow looked harmless, but judging by the size of the creature that dealt it and the way in which the boy went flying through the air like a rag doll made it very clear that it had been a lot harder and possibly fatal. The woman gritted her teeth and tried to move towards her student’s location, where she had heard a sickening thudding sound as he impacted with a solid object of some description, only to be stopped by the beast itself moving towards her aiming to do the same thing as it did to the boy beforehand.

She leapt up into the air to avoid the swinging claw, landing on its leg and sprinting up onto its back, easily confusing it and making it run amuck trying to shake her off. This in itself managed to scatter the beasts further, and it was from her vantage point that Kimiko could peel an explosive tag from her weapons pouch and slap it onto the monstrous animal’s back after leading it far enough away from where Masamori had fallen, leaping off and activating it hastily before it could follow her and cause her any damage. It exploded into a ball of flames and its body was scattered here there and everywhere from the point blank explosion that it couldn’t do anything about just as its assailant landed in a crouch-like position on the floor with plenty of distance to spare. She was now quite far away from where her student had been launched at a tree by the very creature she had just killed, reflecting on the youth’s choice to aid in combat. ‘Has he finally understood the importance of the lesson I set out to teach?’ She thought fleetingly, the thought making her smile ever-so-slightly as she sprang up to her feet and readied herself yet again to fight as she found the creatures flocking towards her. There was five left now, with three moving to her position and the other two further way. One was moving straight for Masamori, recognising an easy feast when it saw one, making the Hokage start to panic. She was about to dash using her enhanced speed to intercept when something made the beast start rearing up and bellow in pain. ‘Satsune? No… it has to be Suzaku.’ She thought, realising that out of her two other students, the male would be much more likely to put himself in harm’s way for the good of a friend. But then she started to panic. Suzaku had been the worst out of all three in terms of injury, so this wasn’t a good combination by any means. ‘I have to get to his position, and fast.’ She thought grimly, realising that if she didn’t get there soon, the worst situation could happen.

For now though, she wasn’t allowed through due to three beasts blocking off her path. One of them made an active attempt to attack her which she dodged by rolling off to the side, aiming to make her way to Suzaku slowly but surely while keeping these creatures occupied. She was very worried about how the last one (other than this grouping) was in his location, and would be deadly to him if even a second was spent wrongly; looking at Masamori’s case. Speaking of the youth… the ebony-haired woman noticed that the body was gone from where it had been laid. It made her fear the worst at first, but then she heard a shout from her female student, confirming that he was okay and that she was taking him for treatment. This made her smile and nod slightly to herself as she let that fast sink in, having already noticed a great change in the girl since the very start she had arrived at the Forest of Death. Oh yes, it was quite obvious. It was a good sign, for sure, as it hinted that the girl wasn’t as cool and closed off as she appeared to be. She did actually care for her comrades, on whatever level that may be. She started racing through somewhat basic hand seals, taking a deep breath and letting out a very high-pitched screeching noise that filled the area, making the three beasts that had cornered her wail and bow their heads at the insufferable din. Having executed the effective distraction technique, she dashed through the three beasts and to the location where her remaining student had managed to take down yet another creature, but he appeared to be suffering for it. Without a word, she reached him and grabbed his arm, pulling him towards her and bundling him into her arms before making a dash for it before the creatures had the time to respond. When they finally came to from the assault on their sensitive ears, they saw their prospective meals running away and gave chase frantically, but by that time, it was already too late for them.

While running and holding Suzaku, the Hokage had freed up her hands a bit to make some hand seals for a particularly powerful, devastating technique that was launched from her mouth straight at the three creatures. Immediately after impacting with the ground, huge flames leapt from the spot and spread across the immediate area, making it rather hot even for the fleeing woman and youth in her arms. Grotesque cries of pain were heard from the beasts as the flames instantly attacked their flesh and melted through, killing them rather quickly due to the point blank range in which they had been when the fire made contact for its later explosion. They didn’t even have a chance to evade Kimiko’s technique, one of the strongest in her arsenal for its sheer range capacity. She didn’t stop running until they made it to the gate, at which point she paused and looked at the boy she was carrying to make sure he was safe, turning to look behind her to make sure that they weren’t being followed, and then placed him down onto the ground again. “Can you walk?” She asked him, already busily unlocking the gate and ushering him out, locking up after herself to put a solid barrier between them and the deadly creatures inside. “We have to get you to the Hospital as quickly as possible.” She stated, looking at him worriedly as she feared that he didn’t have much longer left until he fell unconscious from his heavy bleeding and most likely chakra exhaustion looking at him. It was quite easy to tell when a shinobi was chakra exhausted, or getting to that point. He had the same pasty look and drawn appearance to match this and confirm her thoughts, meaning that she was already taking him by the arm and walking briskly with him back to the village. By comparison, she had come out of the ordeal with little more than scratches and dirt marks from where she had rolled to avoid attacks and the like. If he couldn’t walk very well, she’d pick him up in her arms and start walking back like that instead.
