| To be a master of a thing was to know it and have the ability to destroy it. Thus was what she was taught as a user of most lethal tools. While knowing how to use a thing was important, it was just important to know all of it uses; intended and improvised. Then there was the ability to ensure you were it's only master... the ability to destroy a thing. Thus it was with weapons. You didn't truly have mastery of it until you completed these things. Izumi knew this better then most, and unlike most she knew that weapons often came in forms not of steel and wood. Just as easily as a person could be stabbed they could be killed in a myriad of other ways. Among these ways were those that harnessed the biological. Indeed, these were some of the most insidious ways known to kill a person.
Like any other weapon though, it was only yours once you had conquered it. Which brings us to the hospital where Izumi often practices and plies her trade. She had yet to conquer the biological.. but she had learned a few ways to destroy her weapon should it be wielded against her. Not just any solution would work against resilient strains. It had to be concentrated, potent. Such a thing had existed for quite some time, and it was a common site in this hospital as any other.
They gave the liquid different names by region and from which plants it was derived. There was a constant among them all though, concentration through distillation. It was a process that made the potent liquid undrinkable to most... but strong enough to disinfect wounds and instruments. This made it a useful tool, overriding the negative qualities of the liquid.
There was of course that distinct and overpowering smell associated with it and subsequently hospitals. Then there was the real issue: volatility. Alcohol evaporated at low temperatures forming combustible clouds of gas that were a fire hazard. With fire being the other method of sterilization it would be impossible to avoid open flame in such places. Thus the liquid had to be monitored and kept in closed containers at all times.
Izumi knew all this from her time studying medicine. How she had never before considered using it as more then a simple tool for sterilization amazed her. People were known to overlook those things which they encountered every day though. She knew this as fact. It would make her new found discovery all that more potent. Sure it would smell strongly, but who would expect it to be anything other then strong sake? It could even be used for that use if she could manage to stomach it. Oh the possibilities.
She dared not take it from the hospital though... they watched their supply much too closely. No, she would have to distill her own, a process that would take time to set up and execute. She was confident that she could do it though. Compared to the explosives and poisons she already manufactured this would be a cinch. She left Park Central that day with ideas in her mind. A true weapon master knew that she already possessed the deadliest weapon of all: ideas. This addition to her arsenal would be trivial by comparison. |
