| Don't judge me I need the posts.
So, I was planning to ask people for help with this in the chatbox, but since I am GMT+1, which means that when I am here ready to chat, most people aren't (also I need the posts), I decided to make a topic instead.
Here is the thing: my mind is a volcano of ideas. When I like something (and I sure as hell like this place), my mind starts elaborating countless ideas, I start thinking about a lot of different possibilities for my character, the gender, the faceclaim, the personality, the character development. Problem is, I can only make one character, which means that, of all the many ideas that crowd my mind right now, I'll only be able to actually bring one to life, at least for the time being.
So I thougt: how about asking my new companions for help? I'll post here the ideas I had so far (mostly inspired to characters from KOF, BlazBlue and Disgaea, my favorite games), what I am asking you to do is to state which one you like the most, provide criticism, ideas to improve, and basically whatever you can think of in order to help me make up my mind and pick one! I'd rather this to stay as a discussion so that I can improve my ideas, rather than "The majority of people say to go with X", so I won't make this an actuall poll. Also, as this is something I am doing before even creating a character, asking people for their personal opinions, I felt it belonged here rather than in more strictly roleplay-related sections.
I'll use spoilers to avoid turning this post in an absurdly long wall of text: keep in mind that my plan is to create a Uchiha, and thus these ideas were mostly gared towards that; however, most of them would be very easy to adapt should I fail to obtain the required approval (*shivers at the mere thought*).
- Rachel Alucard:
The faceclaim: pic The original character: The last heiress of the Alucard clan and the strongest character in BlazBlue Calamity Trigger, Rachel is one of the most iconic characters in the entire BlazBlue series. She is a classy, mannered, formal vampire who specializes in long-range fighting, zapping her opponents with thunderbolts from a distance, setting up traps, and using her familiars Gii and Nago for aid in battle. The idea: The perfect character to roleplay a posh, rich, bratty heiress who shows off her perfect education and has a very formal and cold speech pattern. She is well aware of being part of a world elite clan and brags constantly about that, often belittling the "commoners" (which means, everyone who is not in the clan, including ninjas hierarchically superior to her). An interesting character development could be for her to be initially unable to activate the Sharingan, thus suffering from an inferiority superiority complex: the reality of ninja missions, where people get killed and the safety of many is at stake, would have a huge impact on her, causing her to evolve in a deeper, more complex character (unlocking the Sharingan in the process). Pros and cons: Possibly the most interesting character for development, she would be fantastic to roleplay both for the depths she could reach and for her uncommon fighting style, based on zoning, setting traps, striking from a distance, and avoiding physical contact. She would have however many complicated downisdes: the aforementioned fighting style would be based on Raiton and, later on, Fuuton techniques, thus overlooking Katon which is supposed to be a Uchiha's main element, she would be blonde instead of brunette, which is supposed to be a trait of the clan (I was planning to explain this, along with other vampiristic traits like the extremely pale skin, by saying that she is albino, but how would that work as an Affliction?). Also, she would have two animals capable of human speech and equipped with key abilities (the pink bat specialized in illusions, Gii, and the shapeshifting cat Nago), and I don't even know if such things are allowed in this roleplay. Her Raiton-based fighting style could actually be played on along with her albinism (it could cause her to be weak to Katon-based techniques, as in, she could get burned more easily, having an extremely delicate skin) to set her apart as a "different" Uchiha, furthering the depth of her inferiority superiority complex and making her even more interesting in the processm but in the end she would be a very difficult character to roleplay. Also, would it be possible for her to wear her gothic lolita fashion even during missions? It would aid her characterization as a royal brat and emphasize even more her uncommon fighting style...
- Kyo Kusanagi:
The faceclaim: pic The original character: The heir of the legendary Kusanagi clan, Kyo is the protagonist of the first arc of the long-running fighting game series The King Of Fighters (abbreviated KOF), and arguably the most iconic character of the entire series along his rival Iori Iagami. His look, moveset and personality have evolved a lot throughout the series (which spans over 13 years, mind you), which would give me easy access to many different sprites, artworks and similar material, to visually depict the growth of the character from Genin to Chuunin to Jounin. The idea: The most straightforward of all the ideas I have had this far: we are talking about a cocky, yet generous and hot blooded guy who wields flames, is proud of the fame and strenght of his clan, and is willing to put his best efforts into living up to the name he carries. Basic, simple, with a lot of different options to boot for development. Also, has mentioned earlier, this is the only character that comes with a pool of artworks so wide and detailed, that I'd be able to visually depict his growth throughout the years. Pros and cons: Brunette, flames-wielding, swift, agile, cocky, hot blooded, willing to work with friends and bond closely with them if you get to know him under his jerkass façade. Perfect for a Uchiha, right? Might be too perfect in fact: the main difficult with this character would be to develop him on the long run without him becoming boring and stale. A character that fits his characterization to a t may seem a great thing at the beginning, but the hardest part is to keep him interesting over time: hell, SNK themselves had to come up with a kidnapping arc, introducing a new villanous team and even a new main character, in order to keep Kyo interesting in subsequent arcs of KOF...
- Shion:
The faceclaim: pic The original character: Yup he is a guy. Shion is one of the most enigmatic characters of the KOF series, acting as a sub-boss of KOF XI and as a member of the villanous group known as Those from the Past. Little is known about him, mostly because the developers were originally planning to use his models for a female character, the daughter of Ron, a villain from a previous arc. They then decided to change his gender, play on his ambiguous sexuality, make him a startling and unsettling sub-boss, and subsequently drop the ball on him as the whole thing did not work out the way they were expecting. The idea: Just imagine it. A character who mixes traditional Wushu with illusory abilities, who moves with grace and agility, and whose sexuality is ambiguous to say the least (making him simply gay or bi would be just too easy, some serious narrative tension would stem by something worked out in depth and not just for laughs). Imagine such a guy in the Uchiha clan. Would he be considered a freak, an unsettling presence, or maybe an extraordinarily gifted ninja for the rest of the clan to be proud of? Admittedly, the possibilities with this guy are many, and all intriguing... Pros and cons: This would probably be the most controversial of all the characters listed here, and controversy makes for compelling narrative. However, this would also be, and by far, the hardest character to roleplay as: his behaviour, his fighting style, his sexuality, everything about him would need to be explored in a serious way, not just for laughs, because the risk of slipping into cheap homophobic jokes is very, very real...
- Etna:
The faceclaim: pic The original character: One of the most iconic characters of the Disgaea franchise, Etna is the deuteragonist of the first game and the right-hand-woman of the protagonist Laharl, and makes cameo appearances in all other titles alongside him. Don't let her cute appearance fool you: she is actually a very powerful Demon Lord, who can fight to a draw the most powerful guys of her universe, and also leads a legion of Prinnies. She is loyal to her master Laharl and very friendly to the other protagonist of her original game, Flonne, however she is also known to be manipulative and abusive towards anybody else, particularly the Prinnies, and won't hesitate to backstab anyone not named Laharl to carry on her own agenda. The idea: A manipulative girl who is willing to exploit other to carry on her agenda would be an interesting take on the ninja archetype, also due to her fighting style, which is based on polearms like spears and halberds. Another interesting thing about her is that she could have the Prinnies as Summon Pact, making her style even more peculiar. Pros and cons: While she is very interesting when it comes to the fighting style, she is unfortunately not as much when it comes to personality. Granted, being manipulative and willing to exploit others (maybe exploiting the powers of the Sharingan?) would make for some interesting narrative, but it would also be kinda hard to fit into the general atmosphere of a Naruto-based roleplay. Also, there might be difficulties with a Summon Pact consisting of penguin-shaped fiends which attack with all sort of weapons stored in their pouches...
- Mao:
The faceclaim: pic The original character: Another character from the Disgaea franchise, Mao is the protagonist of Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice. A clever guy who analyzes opponents and plans ahead his action, Mao likes to perform experiments whose nature remains a mystery (and a running gag) throughout the game. He hides a deep insecurity and many soft sides behind his mask of bad guy. The idea: Well, it would be interesting to have a calculating, scientific type for a change. He also attacks with fire, which doesn't hurt fitting the overall theme. His habit of observing and studying counter-strategies to turn opponents' abilities against them would go hand-in-hand with the powers of the Sharingan, further aiding the overall idea for his fighting style. Personality-wise, he would probably be some kind of bookworm (interestingly enough, in his original game he is the top student of the Academy of Evil by not being a bookworm, given that to progress in that Academy you need to do "evil" thing, like skipping classes and negletting your homeworks), willing to achieve greater powers through knowledge, and trying to live up to the name of his clan in his own ways. Being a character from Disgaea, he could hhave access to the Prinny Summon Pact as well. Pros and cons: There would be a lot of different ways to develop his fighting style, however keeping his personality interesting all along would be kinda hard... There are also the same difficulties stated earlier involving Prinnies, so yeah...
So this is all: what are your thoughts on my ideas people? |

| I know this is meant to be well, and we should give our thoughts, but shouldn't it be about who -you- want to play as?
I mean, You're going to be the one writing and acting them out; so our choices could really back fire. What if you don't like the character, or how they develop? You don't really get to do em over, ya know?
In any case.
Rachel, evne though you're going to have to pick one animal to summon; Meaning you can't have both the cat AND the bat. One can be a non-combat pet, however.
She seems fun.

| I personally like Shion just because he seems like he would be the black sheep of the Uchiha clan. The fact he looks like a girl would honestly make nearly any introduction interesting, unless people want to be smarty pants and say he's obviously a guy. The biggest reason of all is the fact you said he is controversial. I always think it is wise to test the waters a bit and explore your character just as much as they are exploring the ninja world. The fact much of his persona is left open ended only means you have a lot of room to do this exploration through missions, solo topics, and topics with others. There is much more to talk about rather than creating a character and then proceeding to ask; "hm...now what?" I think controversy is fun but that's just me. Plus he looks a bit more ninja then the other three.
Overall, like Cross said, it is truly you who must decide despite opinions we may offer. Just imagine yourself rping out the characters in separate word documents. Like give yourself a scenario and go from there. Once you do that, maybe you will figure out precisely who it is you want to rp with on a daily basis. Something else you could do is just wing it. I had not idea who I would create but once I searched around the internet for a few pictures and figured out my clan; everything else just fell together. Now Seika is one of my favorite characters I have ever RPed with due to the depth of her personality when in different scenarios. |

Now Seika is one of my favorite characters I have ever RPed with due to the depth of her personality when in different scenarios. Quoting you both as you made similar remarks. I understand full well that it is ultimately up to me, but as I said somewhere in the OP, this is not just a mere "I'll go with the one that gets the most votes" thing, otherwise I would have made it a poll. What I am hoping for is to hear the point of view of as many people as possible in regards of my ideas, because their remarks could help me improve them. For example, Cross' post about Rachel pointed out a difficulty that there would be with her, but it also provided a possible solution. That is the kind of stuff I need: after I have polished all these ideas with the feedback I get in this topic, I'll go with the one I like the most, however the likings of you people will also play a role for a reason you two didn't seem to take into account: appeal. If many people like an idea of mine for a character, my chances of finding people willing to roleplay with me will increase: furthermore, the mere fact that we are here talking will lead you guys to actually care about my ideas, which is no secondary aspect given that, as a newcomer, I was faced with the risk of not settling in this community, like it happened to me in my previous experiences. The people behind the characters are as important, in a RP; as the characters themselves, and those are the ones I want to connect with now.
Incidentally, I like Seika's suggestion about how to pick the character a lot. I will definitely do that, thanks |
