Don’t hold me up now, I can stand my own ground…

A particular young girl had a very bizarre relationship with her clan, if one looked at it properly. Yuzuki was born into the Kessho clan, but due to the royal lineage on her mother’s side she was raised as a princess with no intention of becoming a shinobi. Even if she had wished to become a ninja, the notion would have been quelled due to how it wasn’t ‘a ladylike’ profession to throw oneself into. Because of that, she had no practise with her clan’s special ability of creating Crystal, otherwise known as Shoton; a very powerful advanced element when trained properly and thus harnessed to the utmost maximum. She only became aware of its existence when she had to leave the family palace due to a terrible attack on it, and she needed to fend for herself. She remembered it well. She had stumbled into the harsh woodlands that surrounded Yama no Kuni in its old state (all of the forests had long since died, leaving dead and decayed surroundings in its wake), and managed to awaken a hibernating bear with its cubs. Needless to say, the thing was utterly intent on protecting its territory, and charged the young princess with no mercy. Animals didn’t have conscious brains, you see.

In a sheer instinctive movement, the girl brought her hands up over her head and a strange power enveloped her. Before she knew what had happened, shocking orange crystal grew from her fingertips and created a sharp lance-like object, which, when the bear pounced on her crouched form, pierced straight through it. The dead-weight fell on her, and just like that, she had killed the first creature of many that tried to kill her first. And it had been an absolute accident. Probably the best accident she had ever witnessed, or will ever witness, when relating to herself at least. Having spent the following years honing her skills as a shinobi, she did some research into the Kessho clan background and their Kekkei Genkai, as it was called. She learnt the rough science behind it all, and was able to harness it much better. But what she couldn’t get her head around was how the colour of the crystal she could produce was different to other reported sightings of Kessho crystal. It was most commonly said to be purple, due to pigmentation when mixing the two elements required to create the crystal, so it was very unusual as to why Yuzuki’s crystal was, and always had been, a bright vivid orange in colour. Even to this day, she couldn’t explain the phenomenon even if she tried. As she sat in the makeshift camp she had created a fair distance away from Konohagakure, she idly shifted bright orange crystal through her fingers, letting it roll on her fingertips gently while her indigo orbs studied it carefully.

Perhaps… she was something unique. Something special. Maybe there was something in her chakra, the special life force of all shinobi, that changed the colour of her crystal. Whatever the reason, it always made her smirk happily when she likened the colour of being compared to blood when it ran from a human body. She purposely punctured her middle finger with the sharp-edged crystal shard that she had been playing with, watching as the blood slowly trickled out from the pad of her finger with a grim kind of fascination. Her eyes shifted from the crystal shard to her blood, taking in the lovely contrast between the two shades and slowly smirking even wider. Thus far, she hadn’t found anything else about her Kekkei Genkai that made it particularly special aside from the colour of it, but that didn’t bother her so much. As long as she could use it to inflict pain on others, and keep her self-preservation at an all-time high, nothing would matter.

Don’t hold me up now, I can stand my own ground…

She allowed the shard of crystal to roll down from her fingers and into her open palm, quickly crushing the construction with a shift movement from her hand, shifting her gaze around the empty clearing she was currently inhabiting. She slowly got to her feet and inhaled a deep breath of fresh air, adjusting her hair as she stood there simply surveying her camp, seemingly fascinated by the place, or rather, the lack of people in this space. It made her feel very happy indeed, not having any of her own species to interact with. Why would she ever crave more company when she had herself? She could never get bored or annoyed with herself, could she? She’d always agree with her own opinions, unless she was having a particularly bad day and the other sides of her persona were in a disagreeable mood. Even then, it was easier than having to deal with other humans. She started to move away from that subject that she adored so much, basically hating the human race, and instead thought about her fighting skills. Or rather… the fact that she had barely any. She knew how to deal with wild animals, but they didn’t have the capacity to think like real opponents did. They were only set on food and survival, which made them fierce opponents, sure, but not ones that had a sharp, killer mind to their disposal. Shinobi were trained killers, and she knew that as far as being a kunoichi went, she was a literal novice. She had only learnt her special abilities in the past three years whereas others knew theirs from a very young age, and they went to specialist Academies that taught them everything they needed to know.

It put her at a disadvantage, sure, but she wasn’t one to give up when her luck was down. If she was that type, she would have perished back at the family palace when she was twelve years old. But here she was, still alive and well aged fifteen. Even so, without much technical knowledge aside from the things she had read in books and things that had been taught to her in a casual manner by a travelling Nukenin a while back, she was really fighting for a long shot. A bit of a miracle. And thus, she started to rack her brains for some way to make her special. Sure, she had good medical knowledge and specific jutsu that were deadly, things that had saved her on numerous occasions. Her Ninjutsu was also good, with her numerous elements thanks to the advanced element that she possessed in her arsenal, something which she did actually thank her heritage for her. Even so, she was a rather standard young shinobi. Maybe there was something that she could practise to set her aside. Slowly, she started to recall memories of the man that had trained her in the arts of Medical Ninjutsu. He always only ever used one hand for his techniques, but taught her how to use two hands to knead chakra and use it. Whenever she asked about it, he always shushed her and told her to pay attention.

So her next practises while it remained light included trying to knead chakra with one hand only, her dominant left hand. For hours it failed, and she had numerous accidents with crystal, earth jutsu and lightning jutsu tearing her camp apart due to how she was trying to focus too much power into one hand when she was used to balancing the chakra in both. Eventually when she managed to hold and harness a crystal jutsu in her left hand, however, she knew that she was on the right lines. A smirk tugged up at her lips as she focused on the orange glowing thorns in her palm which started to shoot out and grow in all directions, taking a deep breath and exhaling again in relief. All she needed now was more practise and this would become a very useful skill…
