Don’t hold me up now, I can stand my own ground…

“Come on kid, stop ignoring me!” This strange man just wouldn’t quit, would he? The orange-haired girl wore a face like thunder as she kept trying to storm away from him, fists clenched and itching to just slam themselves into the guy’s face… repeatedly and very hard indeed. Her eyebrows twitched noticeably in sheer irritation as she tried to put some distance between her and the bloody annoying environmentalist that was trying to put across radical messages about littering. His plan made no sense anyway! “Look, all you have to do is go into Konoha and tip over some litter bins. It’s damn simple, girl!” He kept insisting, starting to puff and pant as he couldn’t keep up with her near-jogging pace very well. Of course he wasn’t a shinobi by trade, he was an environmentalist trying to get his lucky break. If he had somebody else do something drastic (in his mind) that could attract enough attention for him to start preaching, then he would be a winner and people would finally listen to him. But of course, the only criminal he could find was a self-declared misanthrope that despised Konoha and did not, under any circumstances, wish to enter the place; under disguise or otherwise. He couldn’t understand it. Surely she would do it if…

That’s right, he hadn’t offered her the biggest scoop yet! “I’ll pay you.” He managed to get alongside her and say it in a slightly hushed tone, a huge grin touching his lips as he watched the girl come to a halt and huff noticeably as she folded her arms over her chest and glared at him. It wasn’t lost on the man that she was slowly edging away, whether it was because he smelt disgusting or she was literally repulsed by the presence of another of her own kind was by the by. He had managed to get her attention at last. “How much?” She asked in a very clipped, curt tone, indigo eyes going very dark all of a sudden as she narrowed her gaze at him, as if saying that ‘If this isn’t a good price, you’ll lose your head… my good sir’. In response, the man blinked owlishly and started to stutter madly, obviously perturbed by her strange stare as he started fumbling in one of his pockets, bringing out a small brown pouch tied with a leather string. He rattled its contents, which made the coins and notes inside of it rustle and jingle respectively, slowly smirking as he watched the girl’s deadly expression slowly drop into something much more cooperative. “All of this, my dear. Now… do we have a deal?” He looked so slimy when he smiled like that and leant in close to her, and the sight of him was so repulsive that she had to make a soft gagging noise and look away, nose wrinkled in sheer disgust. “Fine.” She stated finally, deciding that if she was getting paid, then a simple task like this could be worthwhile for her. Her new client was about to move over to her and possibly pat her back, touch her shoulder or whatever partners in crime did together, but she gave him a glare that could sour milk and shook her head slowly, making a gesture with a thumb moving firmly across her throat. “On one condition… do not touch me.” She finished by making a fake gurgling noise as if someone were dying, just to indicate what would happen if he did indeed touch her. The man nodded and wiped away some beads of sweat from his forehead that had formed from the girl’s sheer scary demeanour that she managed to put across.

For someone so slight and seemingly harmless, she sure was… persuasive.

As they were walking back towards Konohagakure no Sato, with her client at more than an arms-reach away, Yuzuki started to reflect on how this could have possibly happened to her. She had merely been minding her own business, camping out by herself in the wilderness, when this… this… bumbling buffoon of a man had come tumbling out of the undergrowth and into her fire. So that was entirely his fault to begin with. He went around, running and screaming and yelling that he had been attacked, at which point she had to kick him very hard in his gluteus maximus to try and get him to shut the hell up and calm down to a point where he was coherent. To say that he was dirty was an understatement; he was utterly caked in at least four layers of mud and something that smelt utterly foul that she didn’t even want to think about. He finally apologised after he had cooled himself off from the burns that he had inflicted upon himself by being an utter simpleton, and introduced himself to her as Arata, at which point she retorted that he was hardly fresh and new due to how he was ridiculously filthy and old. That… probably hadn’t set them up to be the best of friends from the get go. She told him her name in return, and he started to jump to many conclusions that seemed to further fluster her and make bad decisions, especially since she finally told him that she was a Nukenin. Oh, he had latched onto that idea like a bloody stubborn sloth in its favourite tree that it didn’t manage to fall out of just yet. He reminded her of a sloth in many ways. Arata was a large man, not in height, but in… sheer width. He was shorter than her by about five inches or more, and she was hardly tall, but at least triple her size. When he told her that he was an environmentalist trying to warn everybody about their slowly dying world, she had laughed so hard and told him that the main reason their world was dying was due to him eating everything in it. Okay, so… not the best thing to say to him at that point. She tried to pack up her stuff and leave, but he was adamant and wanted to enlist her to help him in putting his point across to Konohagakure, a village which he described as being the most wasteful out of all the great nations. Due to his poor communication skills, the way he made it sound was voluntary work, which Yuzuki was NOT going to buy into. Why would she help anyone who hadn’t done anything for her?

Anyway… she had packed up her stuff and left, having to run in order to avoid him further, but damn, he was very persistent. Eventually, he had managed to wear her down to the point that she no longer cared. And then he offered money as well, which meant that she was finally willing to do this stupid job for him. As they walked to Konoha, he started to brief her on what he wanted her to do. “Okay, to get into the village won’t be too easy. After all, you don’t have the look of a farmer about you, nor a merchant or anythin’ like that.” Arata started pondering to himself on how to smuggle her into the village, and himself, of course. Well, he was a civilian regardless, having been raised as a laughing stock of the Akimichi clan, so that was no matter. He couldn’t cause any damage even if he wanted to. “Here’s what we’ll do…” He proceeded to launch into an utterly ridiculous idea that would never work as long as the guards at the gates for Konoha were remotely smart. But he was insistent that it would work, and so that was what they followed. They made a quick bypass into one of the smaller villages that were around Konoha and purchased some thick brown material that appeared to be made out of many potato sacks sewn together (in fact, that was exactly what it was) and fashioned some makeshift clothes for Yuzuki. She grudgingly put them on over her finer garments, making a note to wash everything she owned after this mission. And so, he made her appear to be some kind of farmer woman, while he didn’t need to do anything due to his already shoddy appearance. They approached Konoha as farmers, a fair distance apart due to the ex-princess’s rule about touching, and walked up to the main gates into the village where Arata did all of the talking.

Surprisingly, they managed to get inside. He told her to go and do what he would pay her for and he would be waiting around the market area to match his role, and because it was central to the village. “We will stamp out our carbon footprint!” He claimed determinedly, slamming a fist into his open palm and narrowing his eyes with such focus that it was very cringe-worthy to say that this was so pathetic. The orange-haired young woman merely grunted slightly and turned away to do her job, walking through one of the streets and already kicking over litter bins to vent her sheer anger and frustration with this man.

Don’t hold me up now, I can stand my own ground…

Slam, bang. Slam, bang. Slam, bang, bang.

That was the only sounds among the loud chatter in Konohagakure no Sato as Yuzuki went on her warpath through the village in order to get her pay. She worked her way through the streets, kicking over bins and scattering the disgusting litter across the streets before moving on, her face a mask of sheer annoyance and frustration as she was carrying out the task at hand. ‘Just think… you’ll get a bag of money at the end of this. You can go and treat yourself to a nice soak in some spa on the way out of Hi no Kuni. You could even get yourself a new pretty kimono, as a treat and reminder that you’ll never have to do this again.’ She thought, repeating this mantra inside her head the entire time she was smashing her way through the streets of the Hidden Leaf to complete this damn mission. She stepped right in something disgusting as she tipped over yet another bin, pausing briefly and blanching pale white as she tried to stop herself thinking about what it was exactly. Something… sticky… and brown… with weird textures in it… ‘Nice soak in a spa. Nice soak in a spa.’ She kept repeating mentally, taking a deep breath and holding it as she continued to walk, realising that she would have to utterly dispose of these sandals. Or she could give them a real deep clean of some description. That would be the only way she would ever wear them again, after all.

Meanwhile, Arata was milling about in the marketplace somewhat lost as he waited for the Nukenin to do her job and come back. He didn’t like this village, not one bit. It was where he had been born and made fun of for being so large and untalented as a shinobi. How embarrassing… his parents had been great warriors for the Leaf despite their size, able to use their clan’s jutsu and fight like true warriors. But he had been a literal failure. A defect. So he had fixated himself on something that he could become passionate about, which happened to be the environment. When he started to see the massive amount of litter being carelessly thrown around, and how their world was changing, dying, it made him sad and made him want to fight. Perhaps not an overly brave fight, because he was hiring someone else to do the dirty work for him, but it was a fight nevertheless. In amongst his thoughts he kept bumping into people, having to stutter and apologise, hoping that nobody recognised him. No, surely, it had been twenty years… nobody would know who he was. Vendors were selling their wares and didn’t seem to care about him, people walked around him and didn’t even notice his existence until he bumped into them carelessly. Then they looked irritated, but would nod and move on when he stuttered a sorry for not looking where he was walking. Konohagakure was a huge place, and people moved on all of the time. Shinobi and normal people died every day for some reason or another, so he wouldn’t be missed here. It seemed that he had been right after all.

The orange-haired girl had just about reached her limit with all of this disgusting litter and the people in Konoha. She continued on her warpath down the main street, stomping furiously to try and get the horrible mess off her left sandal, her face bright with sheer irritation by this point. Her violence was growing as she rounded the corner, kicking a litter bin and sending it flying through the street, numerous items of litter pouring out and raining down on people walking and minding their own business. The bin she had kicked landed with a loud resounding thud and rolled away down the slightly sloped street, and her indigo eyes screamed sheer murder if ever she caught somebody else’s gaze. People stayed well enough away from her, leaving a corridor of clear air for her down the centre of the street. Whether it was due to her appearing about ready to rip somebody’s head off or because of the awful thing stuck to her sandal was a question that she didn’t wish to have answered. All she wanted to do was finish this damn job, get to the market square, receive her money and leave this awful village once and for all; never to return. She could see the market square in sight now, something which made her sigh slightly out of sheer relief. She kept heading for it, still kicking over litter bins and trampling through it on her way to freedom, her way out, her payment and then her ticket out of this damn place. Already she could imagine the wonderful trip to a spa somewhere on her way out of Hi no Kuni would be, the bubbles around her in a nice bath, a trip to a Hot Spring, massages and relaxation galore. Finally, after kicking over the last litter bin, she stormed into the town centre and made everyone in her way scatter and start reeling off curses to effectively tell her to watch where she was going. She found Arata in the crowds and grabbed him by the scruff of the neck, turning him around and holding out her other hand silently, eyes dark and demanding until he whimpered and handed over the small bag of money he had offered to her earlier as payment for this job.

She huffed and pushed him before moving through the crowds and back to the village gates, muttering a “Don’t ask” to the guards and their bewildered looks about how terrible she appeared at present while she stormed past them and began the long walk to the other end of Hi no Kuni, wanting to be as far away from this place as humanly possible. She stripped off the horrible and scratchy potato sack dress and hurled it aside as she walked, muttering a string of curses under her breath while she tried scraping her sandals on the floor below her while she walked to try and get the horrible trash off her feet. She held up the bag of money and looked at it, smiling slightly as she sighed softly, reminding herself not to inhale properly for a short while for fear of smelling how bad she currently smelt. She whined and reached up to pick a banana peel out of her hair and threw it on the ground as she stormed over the hill and kept walking, head down and body language making obvious not to approach her. Some nice spa therapy should relieve her tensions… she hoped.

[Mission End]
