| As a child growing up in the Hidden Cloud, Hiruzen had grown up in an abusive Household that more or less forced him to seek fun away from his family, often sending him further and further into the wilderness for the sake of seeking adventure and whatever else he might have fun with. It was because of this that he had stumbled upon a group of monkeys he started seeing almost daily from that point on. While he had no idea how to talk to them, the most curious thing was that they knew sign language, something Hiruzen himself had learned so that he could communicate with his deaf grandmother. At the Academy, Hiruzen was the kind of student that exceeded at every single class he took, taking it to the point where he was put in an advanced class and still graduated at an increased pace. While few in his family had seen this coming from the boy that often slacked off so that he could go out and play, this was in fact because of the animal friends he had made in the forest of sanctuary. Finding that he would have more time to play if he did not have to go to the academy all day, he had just started working much harder than people believed him to be capable of so he would no longer have to go to that place. Due to his advanced classes giving him more specific fields to study, learning how to track people and animals had been included in his average day of school along with geography lessons and learning how to tell time or figure out whether he was heading east, west, north or south by using the moon and the sun when no other tools along the lines of a clock or a compass were around.
Whenever he went out into the forest of sanctuary, he made sure to check the position of the sun so he would roughly know what time it was and where he was going, knowing it to rise in the east and set in the west. Using this to find his way back home when heading out of the far end of the forest, he often had to use the things he learned in the academy so he would not get lost. While the point at which he no longer had to even look in order to see whether he was headed in the right direction came in the first year after he started applying his techniques and tricks, he felt that they were particularly useful when moving with a cloudy sky that hid the moon or the sun and made it impossible to use them to find his way around. At times like that, he would look for a point of recognition like a large cliff, a toll rock formation or even something like the tallest tree in the nearby area so he would know what to look for whenever he had to leave and return home. For someone with Hiruzen’s mental prowess, figuring out ways to work around the lack of a sun or a moon was not that hard. Whenever he believed something to be important enough, he kept working on it until he could honestly say that he mastered the concept. While doing so took him a good year, it had been paying off greatly in his later years. Relying on it when moving through the land of snow in order to get to and back from the Hidden Leaf as a young adult, him having this particular set of skills truly aided him in getting around from place to place as fast as he did. He didn’t doubt that it would take some people several days, though he simply did not have that much time to waste just to walk somewhere. |
