Kumogakure was quite the sight to behold. Situated into the mountains themselves, it was as imposing as it was beautiful. From the base of the mountain, Meiko could track the winding path leading up to the gates, getting more treacherous the higher it got. Attacking a village like this from the ground would be tantamount to suicide. When one referred to the 'defender's advantage', this is the ultimate example they would give. If an army were to attack, they would either have to risk scaling the rockside, a feat that was dangerous enough alone, even for skilled shinobi. Or move nearly in single file along the path. Either way they would be left as sitting ducks by the shinobi of the cloud who could rain down death and destruction from the safety of their walls. Even here at the base of the mountain, there would be little cover. The trees had been long cut down and pushed back several hundred meters. No army could approach unseen against this village.

Thankfully, Meiko was not here as an enemy. She was just here to find out what happened to her friend and assist in any way she could if the need was there. The path was steep from the get go and littered with loose gravel. It quickly became so bad that Meiko had to resort to the water walking technique to properly grip to the road so she wouldn't slip and fall off the mountain side or something. As Meiko moved higher up the mountain, the path grew increasingly narrower. Honestly, she couldn't imagine having to traverse this every time she wanted to go to or from the village. Merchants either had it really bad, or were so used to it that they could practically dance their way up.

Finally, she reached the final stretch. A single diagonal path only about three meters wide and fifty meters long. On either side it was a sheer drop of at least one hundred meters. More than fatal for the unfortunate who fell into the chasm. Too really bring it home, the ground that she could see was littered with stalactites ready to impale the unfortunate ones who fell in. Thankfully, it was rather simple for a single person to ascend. Still, Meiko did feel like an open target out here. An easy shot for any capable shinobi. Still, she provided no appearance of being a threat. Even her armour had been returned to her seal since she left the Fire Country. Before her, the gates of Kumogakure grew larger and larger in proportion to the butterflies in her stomach. This was the first time she had ever gone out to another ninja village. Already there were a couple of guards moving into position to greet her. Only now did she realize that, having left in such a hurry, she had no passport or anything to show the guards to get permission inside. Still, it was too late to turn back now. She just had to try and talk her way through.

Reaching the gates, two Jonin stepped forward to stop her from getting any closer. "What is your name and reason for your visit?"[/color] One guard spoke in a thick, demanding tone. Taking in a deep breath, Meiko gave the man a smile and calmly said "My name is Wakizashi, Meiko. I am a Jonin of the Leaf Village. We received word that Nakotsumi, Mana is here and was wounded. She is a very close friend of mine. I merely came here to ensure her safety." The guard grunted before looking to his partner, then back to Meiko. [b]"Papers, please."[/color] He said, holding out his hand. At this Meiko grinned awkwardly and shifted on the spot. "Yeah... I don't have... any. I kinda... rushed things and barely packed several changes of clothes..." The guard did not look too impressed. [b]"No papers, no entry." With that they started to turn around. "Waitwaitwaitwait. What about a message? Can I send a message? If she's here, if Mana is here, tell her that Wakizashi, Meiko is waiting by the gates. Please, that's all I ask. Just send a message."

The guards paused, looked to one another for an answer. Finally, one shrugged and the other sighed. "Alright. we'll send a message to her. But you are not to come any closer to the gate than you already are, understand?" Relieved, Meiko smiled and nodded. "Understood perfectly. I won't get one millimeter closer." With that, Meiko took a couple steps back and sat herself on the edge of the cliff, feet dangling off the side while she waited for her friend to come pick her up. Hopefully Mana held enough sway to get her inside.

PostSubject: Re: Reinforcements Have Arrived [Open] Reinforcements Have Arrived [Open] EmptyMon 02 Feb 2015, 11:07 pm

The youth had a penchant for poking his nose into things that weren't his business. It was one of his many talents. If he was a superhero, he would have been the Long-Nose-Man, poking his thing everywhere. I digress. The youth liked visiting the town gates. It allowed him to nurture the idea that one day he might go back to the Snow Country, where he belonged and where his home was... or maybe it was no longer there. His place had been by his mother, but she was dead now, and his father was no good. Typical really - a cliché story, but it was his story. And he didn't know where it was going.

Some days, he liked to watch the people coming in and leaving. Guess at the stories they could tell. Where they were from? The places they had been to. The things they have seen. The people they had met; the people who they had known, who have passed away. What skills they possessed and how they utilised them? Foreign shinobi were fascinating. They had abilities that he did not; that none in Kumo possessed. Some of them dressed funny, talked differently, carried themselves oddly; they had gear that he couldn't imagine using himself nor could he fathom the workings of. They had agendas, curious perhaps dangerous personalities, beliefs that he didn't espouse; did they know Raijin? They were all so... fascinating.

Today was no different. The boy saw a young woman approach the guards - though she was dressed like a civilian, there was something off about her; the way she carried herself, with a deadly, experienced confidence, put him on edge. Maybe it was the presence of a large chakra presence - hers - that made him weary. She seemed menacing despite her lean frame and a visual lack of any weapon or shinobi kit. She was only a little bit older than him, and yet, the boy couldn't help but admit that she seemed the deadlier of the two.

The girl was told to wait, or so the boy inferred from the body language of the guards and the girl. Good. It gave him time to "rough her up" a bit, if one could call it that. She wore a headband around her neck that identified her clearly. It was a good starting point. The boy b-lined for the woman, stopping a few steps away. The guards paid him no attention. They knew he was one of their own, as he hung around the gates frequently, and had a belt buckle to show off where his loyalties lay.

"Hello stranger-lady-san" he began, his childish voice... sounding especially childish today; if one didn't know any better, they might think he was making fun of her. "What brings you to our wonderful town?" he asked, his tone articulating innocent curiosity. His eyes watched the girl carefully, as his lips held onto a short smile. Norio was looking down for the moment because she was sat down, but he knew, with some regret, that the moment she stood up, this would change. He would have to look up again, because she was considerably taller than him and he was rather a small boy for his age. He was getting used to meeting people who towered over him. It was rather unfortunate, and annoyed him to no end.

A kick to the face… Strangely enough it didn’t hurt as much as Mana remembered it hurting. Her weightless injured body flew back hitting a small cabin. The magician couldn’t remember that being there…  Strange bugs started buzzing all around her causing her to jump up from being knocked out and burst out of the debris. The young woman could hear a laughter of a crazed old lady as the bugs tore small parts of her flesh off, Mana looked with horror as the bugs ate parts of her body. Then that stupid Inuzuka jumped in pounding Mana more and more. Her body froze unable to resist.

Finish her off!” A voice came from nowhere, a powerful and deep male voice.

But… I want to have more fun, she’s strong, who knows when we’ll have THIS much fun!” a voice of a woman echoed through the woods.

No. We promised her an honorable and fruitful death, let the girl know that Parabrahma keep their promises…” the same deep voice interrupted.

Ten figures jumped at Mana wielding kodachi, the magician remembered this moment, it’s the end of her fight with the Parabrahma! She needs to make the hand seals, activate the genjutsu to escape or else she’s going to die, Kumogakure won’t be warned about the danger and innocent people will die! The shaking hands of the hurt and broken young woman raced for the seals…

No… Too late!” she realized as the first short blade pierced her body. Ten figures just kept lifting their hands in the air, lifting them up and stabbing her lifeless body in a perfect harmony. It was graceful, almost like a dance. Mana somehow separated from her body, almost as if she saw it from another angle, there she laid, beaten and missing parts of her flesh, being ravaged by people who promised her peace if only she promised to stay silent, roll over and die.

Mana’s eyes shot wide open. It was just another dream, just like countless others, sometimes ones that reflected that horrible day when she stood against the Parabrahma, sometimes they were visions of future battles, of her epic failure and death as her enemies mocked her feeble attempts to delay the inevitable. What if it was really all hopeless? What if two countries, moreover, ninja and nukenin, couldn’t work together? Maybe it just can’t be done, maybe by not dying Mana doomed the world to falling into the evil hands? Mana sat up and dug into the blanket. She used to do it as a child when she was afraid of Oni sitting in her closet waiting to eat her.

She was afraid, petrified by this upcoming battle. It was impossible not to be afraid, these ninja are some of the most powerful and influential people ever, a collection of amazing people who all wanted to see if the elite ninja can do something amazing with their minds together. The worst thing was that it wasn’t entirely hopeless, that the Parabrahma considered Mana a threat, also that both the Konoha and Kumo believed that Mana could do it. They just kept giving her thumbs up and telling her she can do it, after all, she’s “Konoha’s Sorceress”. People kept telling her of how she took on Guru Ayushi, the Leech, how she did things no one else considered possible. This was never about her. This was about making this alliance work. This was about this generation fighting a war for their own future and their own world.

A loud knock interrupted the worried young woman who has covered herself up with blankets. Mana stood up and slipped into a kimono allowing the person in. She was rich and could afford a luxurious hotel, plus her rather unusual status as an honorary village guest gave her some props with the way people treated her. Kumo may have finally understood what exactly the magician was doing for them – she was basically fighting their own battle with no obligation to do so. That is a definition of what heroes do.

Lady Mana, there is a young woman asking for you at the gate, she is… Umm… Wakizashi Meiko. She wants to make sure you’re safe.

A ninja reported to her, he looked like a simple courier ninja. Mana jumped up, “Meiko!?” she thought. If Meiko was here things may have been different, she may have helped Mana against the enemy or at the very least given her emotional support. Maybe if the magician admits to her friend how afraid she is she’ll have some kind words, something that would make this pressure and nightmares go away.

I’ll go see her immediately, I would be very grateful if you gave me some time to get dressed though. Thank you a lot for letting me know.

Mana smiled and bowed her head for the messenger knowing her etiquette. Strangely enough she was becoming quite the polite little lady after so many receptions, public events and parties with the richest people in Konoha. The messenger looked ashamed, his face blushed with red as he definitely wasn’t expecting courtesies. The man rushed out and left Mana to her early morning routines. Unfortunately on this day the magician will have to use the convenience of room service, she didn’t like to do that and did most of her chores herself usually.

The magician then quickly threw on her magician’s uniform and a top hat and ran off. Meeting a maid she politely requested that her room would be done and apologized that she had to inconvenience the woman. Mana really felt bad about this because she was a guest and as such liked to at least do her own laundry but this was a matter of importance, Meiko wasn’t as well known abroad as Mana was, even if she should’ve been. The magician always thought of her redhead friend as a superior hero, she was always cheerful and had words for every occasion, she never seemed to get discouraged…

I’ll have you know, Lady Mana, that is my actual job!” the maid looked confused as to why the magician was so polite with her as to apologize for asking her to do her job.

Mana laughed out shyly and ran off rushing to the village gate. She saw the guards waiting around impatiently and saw Meiko waiting further away sitting by the edge of a cliff. The magician wanted to just run off and hug her friend. She turned at the guards and nodded.

It’s OK, she’s with me. I think she wants to help protecting the Daimyo, it’s either that or a visit, either way you have no reason to stop her from entering. Look at her clothes, she’s obviously a tourist with that attire…

Mana said to the guards, they just sighed, this whole Parabrahma thing and protecting the Lightning Lord must’ve been a step above their paygrade. Mana then just darted off, running at her friend with open arms, Mana just wanted to hold Meiko and squeeze her hard, she was scared and hasn’t seen a friend for so long! But then she stopped right before she reached her friend.

I’m sorry, Meiko… I know I promised… I… Before you yell at me and start beating me around… Just know that if you two came with me, I wouldn’t have been able to save you, it was all ten of them, all ten of them attacked me at once… I hope you understand at least that things turned out for the better this way. I couldn’t have kept living if you guys died there.

Mana just felt like a real bitch, she lied to her friends when she came back after faking her death, her promise was in vain. Of course if she did take Meiko and Kiyomi with her they would’ve died together, even three of them wouldn’t have come close to fighting all of the Parabrahma. Honestly, reality for once made Mana right…

Only then did Mana notice a peculiar youth standing around Meiko, the magician had no idea who he was but he looked like a Cloud ninja his waist worn headband suggested it as well. Maybe he was just someone to confirm her entry and that she‘s legit. Anyway, that's why Mana is here, right? He didn‘t look like most Kumo ninja, he looked rather pale for that but headband kind of overruled skin color.

Ummm... Hi... I‘m Mana, sorry if my emotional moment scared you or anything. She‘s my best friend... I guess you‘re a Kumogakure ninja too. I was reported as being dead to Konoha so she rushed here to check, I‘m sorry, Meiko, I can‘t go home just yet. There will be an attack on the Lightning Daimyo and I have to stand there and fight with Kumogakure, I want to help them because that‘s what heroes do. And a hero is who I want to be!

Meiko had barely sat herself down when something began approaching her from within the village. The footsteps were fast and close together, signalling the person was probably shorter than average. It was far, far too soon for Mana to be arriving, the message would not have even left the gates yet. The footsteps stopped just over a meter away from her. The voice of the person was rather high pitched, sounding quite young. Swiveling on the spot so she could see this person, Meiko found her assumption to be true. Standing before her was a kid, no a Genin of the Hidden Cloud. It had taken a moment for her eye to catch the shine of his headband, well belt buckle stating his loyalty and profession. Beyond that, he was quite short, so either he was extremely young and practically prodigal, or just had a stunted growth. His clothes were quite light fitting and nearly over-sized, likely trying to hide the light frame he had underneath. His skin and hair however, were the biggest contrast to the other Kumo nin standing guard at the gate. While this kid was almost a sickly pale white, they held a deep tan.

Having taken long enough to observe the boy, Meiko smiled and pulled herself back to her feet, dwarfing the boy before her. Kneeling down so he wouldn't be forced to strain his neck, Meiko took a quick breath in before speaking. "Well, a friend of mine came here a short time ago. She was heavily wounded and I just want to make sure she is okay. Her name is Mana, you might have heard of her, I've yet to meet a person who hasn't" A small laugh escaped her as a means to hide the slight bit of rage that bubbled in her stomach. Mana had once again run off alone and gotten hurt again. Thankfully she had managed to come out of it alive, but it still hurt since she had broken her promise yet again. That aside, this kid could probably give her a bit of an idea on how Kumogakure worked. It would be interesting to see the cultural differences between her village and his. "My name is Wakizashi, Meiko. As you can see, I'm from Konoha. This is my first time visiting another ninja village and honestly, it's a bit intimidating." She let out another small laugh. "What's your name?"

She would spend the next while talking with the boy. Nothing major, just simple small talk on her part and answering any questions he might have. From the look in his eyes, he was quite the curious one and likely had quite a few questions. It would be a good half hour to forty-five minutes before Mana finally arrived. Meiko would hear her voice when she spoke to the guards. "Ah, there she is." Meiko would state, indicating that their time for chit chat was over. Standing up, she would move past the Genin and face Mana. Immediately the magician blurted out in excuses as to why she did not ask for help upon leaving the village. According to her, she was attacked by all ten at once. All ten what? It must be that Parahambla thing the official had mentioned. Whatever that was. Mana had been ambushed by these guys and had barely escaped by the skin of her teeth. So it was out of her hands that she had wound up this way. Mana's attention then turned to Meiko's new Genin friend, quickly introducing herself and summarizing the situation that had brought Meiko to the village. The next part however, caught Meiko off guard. Mana stated that there would be an attack on the Lightning Daimyo and that was why she had come to Kumogakure, to prevent that from happening.

Sighing, Meiko stepped forward, balling her hand into a fist and striking Mana in the arm. It wasn't meant to do any real damage, but she'd at least feel it. "That is for going off on a dangerous mission without telling us." She then pulled her in for a gentle hug. "That is for making it here alive." Releasing the hug, she sighed loudly. "I'll give you the benefit of the doubt this time. You were ambushed on the way here, that can't be helped. But you still should have said something. If someone is targeting a Daimyo, that's no laughing matter. That said, it's probably best we go somewhere else to discuss this. I'd like to know everything that is going on. The attack, these Parahambla guys, everything. No more leaving me in the dark." That said, Meiko then turned to the guards and gave Mana a crooked smile. ?"That said, mind getting these guys to let me in, I kinda... forgot my passport..."

PostSubject: Re: Reinforcements Have Arrived [Open] Reinforcements Have Arrived [Open] EmptyThu 05 Feb 2015, 5:49 pm

The boy couldn't help but see himself as a filler, a distraction before the main event. He stuck around the stranger-woman, asking her questions and offering minimalistic answers to her queries, inquiring about Konohan culture, traditions, politics, prominent shinobi; he poked wherever he could, but the girl was very adept at avoiding telling him anything important. If it wasn't clear immediately, the girl would realise that the boy had no power to let her through the gates. Instead, whether she liked it or not, he was keeping her company, occupying her time with small talk; though he personally found it to be an interesting passing of his time. Due to his curious inclination towards her and, more widely, her village, the boy came off as a rather inquisitive albit young man. His age and height made him seem innocent and naive - adventure hungry even - which presumably stopped her from dismissing him or outright telling him to f-off and leave her alone.

The woman had introduced herself as Wakizashi, Meiko - the boy responded with the fake, on the spot, made up name of Hojo, Setsu. He didn't like the idea of giving away his real name to someone foreign; not like she would remember him anyway. This Meiko told him she was waiting for a friend - some woman named Mana, who was presumably another Konoha shinobi. The lady told him this Mana was quite well known - that she would be surprised if Norio, no, Setsu didn't know her or hadn't heard of. He hadn't. This wasn't very unusual. The boy was an introvert at most times, and in the rare moment when he did come out from the comforts and safety of his family home, his ear wasn't always close to the ground.

The small talk dragged on. The boy felt compelled to keep this Meiko company until Mana showed up. Why, he wasn't particularly sure. Maybe he wanted to find out just who this Mana was, or even if she was real, or if this was a poor excuse for Meiko to enter a village. If such was the case, and this intrigue was discovered, then a struggle would surely ensure and the boy would gladly stick around to watch - heck, maybe even participate in that.

But no such thing happened. Instead Meiko's words dispersed his wild fantasies, and he turned around to see who just was Mana... his eyes looked as hard as they could, trying to see what was special... but minus the odd outfit that the woman (or rather, girl) was wearing, she seemed pretty normal. The top-hat adorning her head was however outright silly. Was she really a foreign shinobi? She seemed one of the least threatening people he had ever met.

The boy was sidelined for the moment, as the two exchanged words and gestures that told him they were close. The things they discussed caught his ears, but he reserved his questions for later. Daiymo? Parabrahama? Oh and passport? What was that?

"Hi, I'm Setsu" the boy replied simply, listening quietly to the onslaught of information this stranger-Mana-girl released on him. Again, Daiymo and Parabrahama came up. What was this about an attack? How was it that this non-threatening stranger from a foreign land knew more than he did about the state of affairs of his own country... well, his father's.

"You want to be a hero?" the boy asked, feeling like he didn't belong in this situation - clearly being more out of place and in the wrong time, than ever before. Still, he was here now and had to make the best of it. Allowing himself to be completely sidelined by these strangers, discussing affairs that should have been internal and guarded, worried him deeply.

"Heroes aren't real" the boy stated with a surprising conviction. "It would be wiser to tackle this problem you are discussing in large numbers. No need for single acts of heroism" he offered his advice, though his short stature and youth were two very clear reasons as to why he should not be listened to. Regardless if it was sound advice or not.

Reinforcements Have Arrived [Open] Vide
PostSubject: Re: Reinforcements Have Arrived [Open] Reinforcements Have Arrived [Open] EmptyThu 05 Feb 2015, 9:43 pm

Mana was happy to see Meiko, she really was, especially after the scare that the Parabrahma gave her by attacking her. The difference between life and death was so small that the magician thought she‘d never get to see her friends again. The kunoichi could have never expected her friend to come here all this way, without even a passport or a permit just to see if Mana was OK. Sure she was in trouble, Mana was always in trouble when things concerned how she ran off doing things alone. While the young woman wasn‘t looking forward to the beatdown from her armored best friend but at some point it was coming and she knew it.

There it was, Meiko punched her in the arm just hard enough to make Mana grunt out but just barely less hard than it took to punch the woman‘s arm out of the socket. Meiko always had problems with knowing her own strength, then again, the magician really deserved it. She had no reasons to just run off like that, none at all. This whole Parabrahma thing was supposed to be a team‘s effort. People from different villages running off and working together to solve a common problem, one that would harm all of them.

Mana was supposed to ask Meiko and Kiyomi to go with her, she really should‘ve done that. There was absolutely no reason for the young woman to leave alone, she didn‘t even fully understand why she did what she did. There was just this feeling that she has to go and that it would likely be the last time she went anywhere. Almost like subconsciously she knew she‘d get attacked, like she knew she‘d die and still she went and did so alone. The feeling just couldn‘t be explained by any reasonable explanation and Mana was sorry for following it.

Getting hugged however felt really good. Mana gripped her friend tightly and held her real long, almost dying and thinking one won‘t ever see their friends again tends to do that to people. Meiko seemed to forgive Mana when she realized that the magician was ambushed and didn‘t expect all of this to happen, she also seemed to agree helping Mana to deal with all of this. The magician almost started crying but managed to contain the harmony of joy and sadness inside.

Thanks... I really need your help and I don‘t know what went over me when I left alone, I just didn‘t feel like myself I suppose... I‘ve got some help from the locals, some kind people agreed to stand beside me but with you I know we‘ll win! Kumogakure has a lot of ninja but they aren‘t too strong, they also lack trust but it‘s okay, I told these guards to let you in and that you‘re with me. For the time being it‘s alright...

After Mana was done greeting her friend she turned at the boy that spoke up. He was a young ninja, similar age that the magician herself started the gig. She didn‘t know just what his story was or how he went about his life but something he said just came off as odd. „Heroes aren‘t real“, is that what the youth believes these days? After all that Mana tried to prove them, that she‘s striving to be a hero, that they can all be heroes and all that they need is a little bit of trying. Why is this young man so lacking of hope so early in his life? What kind of ninja is this village breeding?

Hello, Setsu. We‘re very glad to meet you, we take it you‘re a Kumogakure ninja then. I‘m sorry you think that heroes aren‘t real. You saying that negates my entire life and everything I‘ve ever done, yet I am afraid that you allow a single experience in your life tell you what you think. As someone who has stood many times against adversity with just myself as the last line of defense I must disagree, I think that everyone can be a hero, most just choose not to be. A single mother managing to keep up two jobs to support her children is a hero, any ninja who gives up their life protecting people they love is a hero, my friend Meiko here is a hero! If everyone in your village are so sad and pessimistic I am not surprised you‘re the first target of the Parabrahma, sure way to get everyone killed is to lose faith in your heroes.

The boy must‘ve had his reasons to say those words, yet Mana went through a lot in her life, she had every reason to believe that being a hero was possible. That heroes were real and that she wasn‘t too far off from that ideal. Even if there were no heroes in this world, even if it was too cruel or lacked the capacity to host any as many claimed Mana would never give up trying to be one. People look up to heroes, people aspire to be heroes, heroes are who make people change and Mana wanted people to change. To start value life as something magical so becoming a hero was the only way to achieve that.

I‘m afraid you have no idea of what you‘re saying in regards to the other thing as well, Setsu. You see numbers do not decide anything else but casualty rate. Right now there could be a hundred of you attacking me and I‘d disable you all with a single illusion. But if you came at me after growing strong, becoming skilled and proud, I have no doubt you‘d beat me. Numbers do not matter in that sort of battlefield, skill and desire to win does. The Parabrahma attacked and outnumbered me ten to one and yet I still stand here and talk to you, that doesn‘t mean I‘m stronger than all ten of them, it means I just wanted to live much more than they wanted to kill me.

Mana looked around after a mountain breeze picked up her hair and moved it around forcing the young woman to hold a strand together to keep them in order. She smiled gently at Setsu.

I hope once you see us united with your village‘s strongest against a common foe that threatens your home you will reconsider your stance on heroes.

The boy was an eager one, Meiko could give him that. There was a curious flame to him, even with this simple small talk, he was trying to learn all he could. It was something she respected about him, people like that would go far in this world. That said, once she had introduced herself, the boy's demeanor changed for a split second. He gave the name Hojo, Setsu in response. However, for that brief moment, that curious spark in his eyes vanished, replaced by cold control. The next moment however, he was back to normal. In response, Meiko simply smiled and continued their conversation as though nothing had happened. It was understandable that the boy did not want to give his real name. She was a foreign shinobi after all, likely he had grown up being told how Konoha was an enemy, even in these peaceful times. That underlying animosity made it difficult to have any meaningful diplomatic relations with other villages. Why settle on big agreements when one false move could send you to war? Mana however, was working to resolve that, something she must have had decent success with considering the amount of trust the Cloud placed in her.

After Mana had shown up and the introductions were all done, she did say that the guards would allow Meiko through the gates this time. That was a relief, the last thing she wanted was to be sent back home after coming all this way due to a lack of papers. At Setsu's comment on heroes, Mana's attention turned to him, launching into a full on speech about heroes. Meiko smiled at the girl as she spoke, it had been so long since she had been so passionate about something. Having been stuck in a depressed rut for what felt like months. It was so bad she nearly got herself killed on the last mission the two had done together. She was so determined to sacrifice herself that it had almost happened. Somehow though, she managed to pull through and save the day. When Mana brought up Meiko however, she had to step in and intervene. "Whoa whoa, don't go spreading stories about me. I'm no big hero." She knew Mana would refute that statement, but it was true. Meiko never felt like a hero worthy of accommodations. Mana was the one going around from country to country enforcing diplomatic ties and saving hundreds of lives. Meiko just stuck around Konoha doing the odd jobs and keeping to herself for the most part.

Mana continued to speak with Setsu for a little while longer. Once the two had finished, Meiko would turn turn to Mana. "Well, I think we should be going then. You have a lot of explaining to do, I want to know everything about this Parahambla, this plot on the Daimyo, anything you can tell me." That said, she turned to Setsu, giving him a warm smile. "It was nice meeting you Setsu, but sadly, business calls. I'll be in the village for some time, so once everything calms down, I'd like it if we could talk again. Maybe you could show me around the place." With that, she would stand upright and allow Mana to lead her inside the village. As she passed the guards, Meiko made sure to thank them for their efforts. Now, it was time to get down to business, there was going to be a big fight on their hands soon. She had to be ready.

The boy scoffed at the idiocies he was hearing. Who were these two? So blind, so embarrassingly idealistic and irrational. WRONG! Plain wrong. A single mother working two jobs? What sort of textbook example was that? And why would she have multiple children, when clearly she cannot support one of them via reasonable means? Was her stupidity to be revered? Cherished or praised? No. Don't have children if you can't support them. Norio's mother should have known better too...

And shinboi dying for those they love? What sort of heroism is that? It would be more merciful to die together with those they loved, rather than leave them on this earth, to forever remember the debt they owed, which would continue to burden them till the end of their existence. If these "shinobi" were real heroes, they wouldn't have died. They would have fought and outlived whatever this adversity was, that was thrown before them. These "heroes" were weak, and death found them, and took them in, as was its right and as was proper. There was no place for the weak among the title of "heroes", but maybe that was the whole point. The boy mused the question silently. Maybe heroes were simply people who were remembered for their moments of weakness or stupidity; celebrated for their vanity and arrogance. A self-proclaimed serial last line of defence? This Mana girl fitted the role of a hero perfectly.

"I wouldn't judge the strength of another village so precariously, little girl" the boy barked, a small dog trying to seem important. But perhaps there was some truth to it. Whatever her rank or her accomplishments, she couldn't have been much older than him. Sure, she might have had countless experiences that had made her more perceptive to the workings of the world, but still, she was a teenager... True wisdom was still far from her reach. "I don't care much of what you think about the village, but declaring and discussing its weakness loudly is like shouting a challenge at the top of the mountain" he told them, before adding "And you're literally at the top of a mountain"

He smiled at his own private joke, his clever eyes lingering on the cliff where the first stranger-girl had sat before. It seemed the two were ready to leave, and so was he.

"Good luck with your venture. Guess I'll read about it someday, Miss Hero-san" and with that, words lashed out by a tongue coated by the juiciest sarcasm he could muster, the boy left.
He would walk back into the comforts of his home, which was free of foreigners with foolish ideas and feelings of self-grandeur.

Heroes... psh. Stupid.   [Exit]

It seemed that Mana‘s attempts to explain her stance on heroism made the boy from Kumogakure mad for some reason. The reason of that eluded the magician, why would this boy cling so hard just to prove that he was alone, that no one was watching over him? Why would one try so hard to prove their own misery? A thought came to the magician that the youth may have been offended by heroes at some point of his life, perhaps a person he considered an authority figure abandoned him in a moment of weakness, something he still was hurt about. Mana embodied someone that this boy hated, that much was for certain...

You know, if I was actually an enemy you‘d be a hero too for fighting for what you believe in so proudly...“ Mana replied to the youth‘s farewell which was full of spite and anger, reminding her so much of the time spent in Kirigakure. People always thought that when a foreigner decided to help them it was because they felt sorry or thought that their village was weak, Mana fought against that kind of views her entire life and yet she seemed not a tiny bit closer to her goal than where she was when she started...

The young magician waved farewell with a smile for the young boy, he may not have been the most polite or thankful representative of his village but Mana kind of liked him. He was kind of different, he tried to give her something to argue about, something to prove instead of obsessing over who she was and taking every word she said to heart without any filtering. The kunoichi giggled and turned to Meiko.

I like this guy, he‘s funny. I just hope that one day he cheers up a bit, it happens that he still views his village in the classic old ways of making everyone from abroad into his enemy. I have no idea how the spirit of the old days got into the heart of this boy, maybe once we fight for his village he will open his eyes for a change...

Mana looked into the cloudy blue sky, the mountains always had the most beautiful sky, the gloom and mist of Kirigakure couldn‘t even compare to this. The old Mana would have taken this boy‘s anger and spite to heart, gotten obsessed with proving him wrong, would’ve blamed herself for saying or doing something wrong. She wasn’t that person anymore, she was now enjoying her life for it might end at any moment knowing what’s ahead. Meiko’s involvement may have added something to fear for but at least now Mana can keep her promise to her friends about involving them into her battles.

I suppose you’re right, we should go back to the hotel, you’ll be staying with me for a while. I can’t really use all that space I’ve paid up for anyway so you can have one or two rooms. I’m not really sure when the bad guys will be attacking so we may need to stay here for a while. I’ll tell you more once we actually make it home, I don’t feel like talking about all of this casually walking through the streets you know…

Just like that Mana lead the way to the village, knowing how she informed the guards that Meiko was with her they shouldn’t have had any more problems. If anything they should’ve been happy – Meiko being here meant more people protecting their village and their Lord. The people inside the village shouldn’t have had too many problems as well, they wouldn’t have known who Meiko was, for all they knew she could’ve been a Kumogakure ninja as long as they didn’t stare at her headband. It was just a short trip from the village gate to the hotel, it was a pretty fancy piece of work, without a doubt honorary guests stayed there all the time. Seeing how Mana was a well known magician she would’ve raised less suspicion to the common villagers by staying in a fancy place.

Once the two young women reached Mana’s four room suite and entered the magician sat down on the bed.

Choose a room, I don’t think you have a better place to stay so I’ll feel personally offended if you don’t stay here for the duration of our stay, once all of this is over we can go home together. I paid for all of this already anyway so you won’t be troubling me in any way. If you need armor or clothes or whatever we can hit the shops in the evening, this is a ninja village after all and I’m sure they have blacksmiths that take custom orders, either that or you can send a message to Konoha so that a courier delivers your equipment. Just… Try not to walk around in full gear, the villagers are a little bit of edge as it is.

Mana then opened the mini fridge and removed a can of soda and opened it. She made a soft gesture for Meiko to eat or drink anything she fancied.

Well, I don’t want to go too deep into it seeing how you’ll be hearing about it for a while. There’s an organization working on removing all the Daimyo, then taking out the Kage and taking over all of the world to themselves. They want to form a world where ninja are in control and people without chakra manipulation work as inferior citizens of the society. Lightning Daimyo is their first target, they’ve targeted Konoha already, I stopped them. I guess they are the kind to hold a grudge so they tried to kill me when I was moving to Kumo to stop them here too. I suppose if they want me dead I’ve got to be doing something right. They won’t stop until all of the Daimyo are dead so I will be moving to other countries too after this…"

Mana explained the short version of the story to her friend, she left out the part where she believed that she might not survive all of the battlefields, that would make Meiko overly upset and all of this must’ve already been overwhelming to her. Finally the armored friend was involved in Mana’s life, finally the two got a chance to fight together. It meant a lot to the magician that Meiko was here, it may not have seemed so but she was jumping in joy inside. Having one’s best friend near during what may have been the last couple of weeks in one’s life felt soothing, at least before the big fight the two are going to relax and have some fun…
