Daily morning runs had many medical nins rushing and stressed as the hospital was unusually packed. Patients were slowly waking from their uncomfortable sleep, some needing their 9am medication and others just needing someone to talk to. Whatever the situation was, Suzu was glad she had been assigned to another section of the building, free of needy patients.

She was not in charge of her appointment book, and the patients she saw were the ones chosen by the secretaries. According to the experienced medical nins who have been working at this hospital for quite some time, the secretaries knew best, and whatever medic a patient was hired to see, it apparently worked out to both parties’ advantages. Suzu highly disagreed.

She had all the reason to believe her next patient with an appointment scheduled at 1pm would be just like the rest. Despite the fact that Suzu was a bit inexperienced, compared to the others, some of her scheduled patients were a little too easy to deal with. Almost bizarre. One had a cut on his finger, perhaps 5mm deep, and his efforts to stop the bleeding by wrapping it up with ribbons didn’t work out too well. Everytime he went to pick the scab, small pieces of thin ribbon string got pulled out as well, causing a sting, which in turn, making the finger pour out with blood again. She suggested a bandaid.

She couldn’t help but to think that in others’ eyes, she was too inexperienced. Yet, this appointment-ee seemed to be different. Her hospital records show.. well, she has no hospital records. The most they could pull out from her was that she was a certified Chuunin shinobi in Kiri. Rarely did the hospital get any visits from Chuunin shionbi – or any shinobi for that matter – and if they did, why is she booked under Suzu’s appointment book?

In the waiting room of the hospital, Saya finds something rare in her life. Stillness and quiet fill the white walled room. The calm wasn’t a tranquil one, so much as a boring one. Little other than out dated newspapers was left around to amuse herself with while she waited, but it wasn’t too much of a concern to her. The monotonous humdrum of the waiting room gave her plenty of time to think. With Saya’s constantly moving lifestyle, it was something she was rarely afforded. All too often her thoughts focused solely on the act of mastering her martial trade, and perfecting her physical self.

As she passes by the time waiting for Suzu to step into the room, she stares down at her hand. As this was a social call, Saya was missing her armor. With her plated gloves out of the picture she could see her flesh. Her skin looked normal enough; her palm held the creased tracery of life, love, and fortune lines that everyone else’s hand had, and yet she was strikingly different from most of the other ninja she’d met in the village. Beneath the surface of her skin lurked a hidden secret most would find horrifying. Saya smirks just slightly and shakes her head.

She had personally requested Suzu to be the one she was set to see, and Saya would have it no other way. Bull headed to a fault she’d barely told them her title, let alone the reason for her visit. Instead she simply insisted, and remained patient. In time free time was found, and her appointment was finally granted. Suzu, she hoped, could answer many of her questions. She seemed to know Kakuhan, and fortunately they did not seem to be friends. Perhaps Suzu even knew about her plant like nature, and could simply be forthcoming with information. If not.. well. Saya had ideas.

Her eyes fall a little lower, looking well past her hand. She lowers her arm to get a better look at her leg, and the nasty wound that had been there previously. Even the vines had long since receded by now, leaving the wound to be little more than a memory to her. She wasn’t sure if it was still sore, but she doubted it. The magical vines inside of her were remarkable indeed. While at one time they’d simply pulled the wound closed and sealed it with living stitches, not even a scar lingered now. Now there was little more than new flesh, and a stronger network of vines beneath it.

It has been 3 months to this day that Suzu was granted this office space for her patients and appointments. Having been a recovery room, it still held with it various types of hospital machinery and monitors. The floor-length curtains matched the wall-sized windows, which gave a decent view of the city. The desk was awkwardly placed in the middle of the room, but she stood near the door, her feet tapping to the beat of the second hand in anxiety.

Unconsciously, her fingers began to fold the post-it note in her hand until it became the size of a pebble. She had made various memos regarding the 1pm appointment, and several sticky notes were placed in the vicinity of this room, all with the same reminder. She was intent on being punctual with this patient and since she had known of this appointment, Suzu had been carefully calculating the time she had to prepare and get herself ready. Hastily refolding and folding the note again, her eyes kept darting back to the clock, following the slow movement of the minute hand.

After waiting what it seemed to be an eternity, the clock, and her nerves, struck. She removed all the sticky notes on the way to her desk, throwing them on a pile of paperwork. Quickly assuring that she was well organized, she headed over to the door, twisting the knob with an unsteady hand and walked into the waiting room with a discomfited smile. It was uncomforting to see that the girl had been waiting unaccompanied. Receptionists looked over to the opened door, their eyes shifting from Suzu and Saya with raised brows. It appeared they had noticed that Saya didn’t fit into the category of being Suzu’s daily patients. The Kirigakure headband was a dead giveaway.

Doing her best to ignore the receptionists’ quiet whispers, Suzu felt a hint of familiarity in the girl’s poise and professionalism. As she continued examining the girl, her memory slowly began to regain itself. The patient’s dark eyes stimulated a quick flashback to the forest of fog, and their short encounter. The image of her on the cold ground, stunned in pain made her bottom lip quiver.

Suzu had no interest in playing story time in the waiting room. The last thing she needed were curious receptionists getting an earful of enough information to potentially remind her of the incident everyday. As if her squeaky door hadn’t caught her attention yet, Suzu cleared her throat, awkwardly holding the office door open for her.

Saya looks up at the sound of the door opening, smiling quite happily that her wait is over. “Oh, goody.” She says quietly as she rises to her feet. The sword she had brought in had left her with endless attention, but her bullheaded refusal to be without it was eventually met with compliance from the local staff. She tucks the weapon back into her belt as she steps forward, bowing her head politely towards Suzu as she does. She continues on her greeting as she steps past Suzu and through the door. “I was getting tired of waiting. Thank you for seeing me. It is good to see you again.”

To look at Saya, it would certainly be a mystery why she’d come to the hospital. She bore no obvious wounds, and only a few minor scratches. She was strong and fit, and clearly this was the last place she should be. Yet here she was. There was really only one obvious connection between the two shinobi. Saya remains a little quiet once through the door, allowing her eyes to silently explore her surroundings. Having never been beyond the waiting room of the hospital, this was all new territory to her. She wanted to be sure there were no prying ears when she began her explanation, so for now she simply defaults to Suzu as the leader.

As Saya walks, her left hand rests gently on the silk wrapped handle of her katana. Though she doesn’t seem on the offensive, the gesture seems natural and comfortable. It was as though she was born with her sword at her side, and she walked with it as though it were an extension of her hip. It was less than a weapon and more a body part in Saya’s mind. There was an almost audible sigh of relief as Saya left the waiting room.

Suzu refrained from speaking in the presence of nosy ears, and waited for Saya to step into the room. As a subtle message to the receptionists to return to their business, she prominently closed the door behind her with a slam. “I wouldn’t give them much attention,” Suzu began, gesturing Saya to one of the two chairs across from her desk. “They don’t seem to understand the meaning of confidentiality.” Moving towards the wall, Suzu pulled the curtains open, letting the few rays of sun shine through the dull room.

She took her seat atop her desk, purposely setting herself down on the pile of outdated paperwork. The rather large leather chair seemed unfitting for someone her size and she felt it would pose too great of an intimidating barrier between the two. She wanted to keep things as casual as possible, while maintaining her sophistication. Grabbing her clipboard, she clicked her pen and looked over at Saya.

It was nice to see her well, but she couldn’t help but to wonder how she pulled through the pain. Despite the fact that she had been successful in erasing the memory of that day from her head, Suzu could never forget the suffering Saya had been a part of. Worst of all, Saya had tolerated the pain. It bothered her to know that she was of no help to the girl because of her personal prejudices.

To prevent resurrecting the lost memory, Suzu withheld herself from further, or any inquiry. She wanted this appointment to run smoothly and without mistakes. Unnecessarily clearing her throat again, Suzu began to ask the mandatory questions.

“It says that you had booked this appointment,” She started, looking down at her clipboard, which bore no information whatsoever. “So, what can I help you with?” In other words, where does it hurt?

Saya glances down at the chair for a moment as though she didn’t understand it. She was going to stand, but sitting seemed a reasonable enough request. She sets herself down in the offered chair with a little nod, her attention remaining mostly focused on Suzu. “Well..” She begins, and then pauses for a moment. Finding just the right words to work in this situation was important. It wasn’t as though she could simply confess to her abnormal anatomy, and insist she fix it.

“You see.. I asked to meet up with you, because we have at least limited contact in the past. You have met me, and I know you have at least met Kakuhan as well. As he is at the literal and metaphorical ‘root’ of this problem, I think that helps us a little. I am sure you recall the first time you laid eyes on me, in the Forest of Fog.” She says, not recalling the unconscious voyage she’d been brought on through the hospital, previous to the meeting in the forest. “Well, my problem stems from there, and has brought me here today. You see, I think you are aware at least on the surface of what Kakuhan did to me. The seed he planted inside me as infested every part of my body now….”

After a short moment of quiet she continues. “I’ve become as much plant as I am human.. and yet I still understand so little about what happened to me. Kakuhan never bothered to explain, though I also never asked him. He’s left the village now, which has opened several windows for me. With him gone, I feel as though I have the chance to actually learn what it was he implanted in me.. and to see if I can wrest control of it away from Kakuhan.”

Saya falls quiet after she was done, giving Suzu a chance to absorb what she said. Certainly it was a unique appointment she’d made, and it wasn’t likely the medic had a default or standard answer to reply with. Looking at her, it’s still hard to believe what she says. Her skin is pale and smooth, and she clearly has no leaves, stems, or greenery too her.

Listening, Suzu had hoped Saya was here for reasons beyond their previous encounter, though she knew very well that she seldom had any other reason to visit the hospital, thanks to her abnormal tolerance to pain. But loose ends needed to be tied, and to seek help from a live witness and a medical ninja seemed appropriate. Knowing that the incident had happened long ago, Suzu could only guess that Saya had waited until the right time to inquire for help. The right time happened to be after Kakuhan’s departure from Kiri.

She let out a grave sigh, closing her eyes and taking a moment to think. She tried to recall back to the forest of fog and more precisely, Saya’s disposition at the time. Her body was damaged from head to toe with burns and scratches. Kakuhan had also mentioned something about her heart, and a parasite. But her memory stopped there, and anything more he revealed about the plant was a blur.

She had questioned the authenticity of the parasite jutsu, and has even predicted that he was bluffing in order to look at him as her superior. Such a jutsu deemed impossible, but she required no more verification than the victim sitting inches away from her to prove that the parasite was indeed, alive. Saya had come here to ask the questions, but how would Suzu be of any help when she didn’t know anymore than her?

“He said that the plant inside you is a parasite. It uses your body as its habitat and from there, it grows. I can only guess that’s how it’s able to take control of your body; the vines somehow serving as your second nervous system.” Suzu was no botanist, but she couldn’t imagine another way that parasite could be in control of Saya’s body. Unless the vines had some sort of remote controlling device, she was sticking with her theory.

“I have to say that I am surprised by your request,” Suzu commented after Saya had spoken. “I thought you would want me to remove the parasite, but now, I can’t predict what would be easier; removing it, or reversing the control so you’re in charge. The parasite acted on its own will when it infested your body, and I’m guessing by now, it’s comfortable. I highly doubt any medical ninja has performed surgery on a half-plant person, so my statistics might be a little off, but trying to remove it would probably cause life-long damages. However, trying to reverse the control would..” She couldn’t finish her sentence.

The past few weeks had been nice to Saya, and she seemed to have recovered pretty quickly. Her skin had healed perfectly and she maintained her hard exterior. Suzu couldn’t imagine being responsible for having a part in seriously destroying her life with this surgery, but she wasn’t in a position to change Saya’s mind. Knowing her, she had probably spent days thinking about this, and her attendance today shows that she does want to go through with this procedure.

“I need you to realize that you would be risking your life with this operation,” She said with a stern glare. “I can’t refuse to help you, but I need you to understand that this decision could be life-altering. And I know you do. But for now, it’s crucial that you tell me everything you know about this parasite. Everything that Kakuhan told you at the forest of fog prior to my arrival and everything you learned about it during the time it was developing inside your body.” Placing the clipboard comfortably on her lap, she began to write.

“No.. I do not think I would be risking my life, but perhaps I have been less than clear, but how best to explain? You see, these vines have infested me. They consume me. They have settled their roots in every portion of my body. My fingertips are no more free from this plant than is my heart.” She says as she lifts a hand and settles it over her heart. It was an oddly tender expression from Saya, though one she intended to be free of heart tugging emotion. Honestly, Saya didn’t seem disgusted or offended by the vine. “When Kakuhan planted this seed in me, he placed it in my heart. I can no longer be free of this thing, then it can be free of me. We have both become one being.. however the drawbacks are quite annoying.”

“You see, it is not as though the vines simply hold a will of their own. They do not force me to move my arms or legs, or to speak and breathe. You see, only when Kakuhan is around do they extert any influence over me at all.. and only when Kakuhan issues orders to them. It’s as if he is able to talk to the plant, and the vines inside of me will obey his orders. By ordering the vines around, he’s managed to go so far as incapacitate me. At first he tried to order me around with the plant, however my very high tolerance for pain prevented him from being able to use the vine against me.” Saya smirks slightly, her hand finally lowering from her chest. “The fact that he could not control me with pain greatly frustrated him.”

“The reason I came here was not to be rid of the vines, for they do belong with me. Somehow I am at ease with the plants inside me, yet bothered only because Kakuhan is not deserving of having control over me. I am one of Kirigakure’s finest warriors, and only the Mizukage should be able to control me so easily.” She says with a nod and a grin. “You see, what I truly want is to understand. I seek knowledge, so I have come here to see if you could help.”

“Can you help me identify this type of plant? Can you help me understand how it works, and understand how it grows and feeds and breaths? It is a part of me now, so I seek understanding. Only after I.. and We, understand this plant will it be possible to make even slight changes to it. I know I am asking a great deal from you, and if it is not something you feel comfortable with, I will not pressure you. But I hold no fear of the experimenting.. and I think once you see the things this vine can do, you will be as amazed as I am..”

“I highly doubt that it’s impossible to remove the plant.” Suzu stated, flatly. “It’s a plant and biologically, a living being. Right now, I find it easiest to compare it to a full-body disease. With the right dose of medicine, the vines shouldn’t take too long to disappear. If not, antibiotics should keep the vines at a low control rate. But since your intention doesn’t involve removing the parasite, I’ll let you continue.” So far, Suzu was able to understand that the parasite had been implanted in Saya’s heart. Effective for Kakuhan, but irritating for Suzu.

The thought of being physically connected to a plant was nauseating. It was her sole reason for bringing up the option to remove it, but Saya seemed to like the added benefits. What they were, Suzu was afraid to inquire. “The vines do not have a mind of their own,” Suzu started, waiting if Saya had to correct her. She wrote the information on her clipboard and started talking again. “From what I understand, they can’t control you. It’s Kakuhan that has power over the vines, and ultimately, you. The vines are just acting as his puppets.”

Suzu sighed. As Saya kept pouring out information, she tried to come up with a quick game plan as to how this procedure would work out. However, the confusingness of the parasite made it impossible for her to even think straight. “I hope you realize that even trying to understand this plant will be difficult. All that we know about it is that it holds some mystical power beyond our imagination. We also know that Kakuhan’s control causes you pain, but I guess that’s irrelevant, considering you’re practically immune to it..” She trailed off, taking some time to write.

“The plant is implanted into your heart. Kakuhan controls you by controlling the plant. If he’s using some type of freaky psychic telecommunication magic, it’s reasonable to guess that he sends the message to your heart, where the “main vine,” you could say, is located.” At this point, she felt like she was repeating herself. But it aided her in understanding this dry information.

“But let’s not get too far; you want figure out what the heck we are dealing with first, before we move onto the physical bits and pieces.” Setting the clipboard down on the desk, she stood up, walked over to the door and faced Saya. “I was, and will always be a visual learner. Meaning, I learn best when I see what I need to understand.” Twisting the golden handle on the doorknob, she locked the door. “In order for me to see what the vines can do, do I have to do something? Attack you, heal you, frustrate you?”

"Well, that would be the simplest way. It is hard to express in words really the impact the vines have. There are very few injuries that will bother more for more than a few minutes." Saya says with a somewhat relieved smile. She was worried Suzu would be bothered when she suggested harming herself, but she had no fear of doing so. That would make explaining easier. Saya reaches back behind her and retrieves a kunai from her ninja pouch. She waits a moment, letting Suzu approach her desk, then sets the sharp knife of Suzu's desk. "I would prefer you were the one to do so. Honestly, taking a knife to my own flesh is unnerving, and leads to uneven cuts."

"I'll leave it up to you. Small cuts heal quickly. Larger cuts heal.. quickly. Even broken bones are little challenge for them. Even cutting my arm off, is only inconvenient to me. I would prefer you only cut off a finger, however, if you wished to go that route. I would recommend you did, I have cut off my own finger before." She says and lifts her left arm to the table. Her heavy steel bracer lands with a mighty thud against the solid desk, and almost comes close to shaking it to pieces. Saya just blushes some, and lifts her arm once more. She brings both of her hands together for a moment, and forms three simple hand seals. After she finishes them both of her bracers, and the steel bands over her shin guards, vanish in a puff of smoke.

"Sorry.. Training weights, I forget about them sometimes." she mutters as she lays her arm down on her desk. Her skin seems free of scars, but upon close inspection there is a small network of scars that can be made out covering her in a sparse thatch of ancient injuries. Saya returns to the previous subject and continues. "Really, I think they only thing the vines will not do, is repair a major organ. Kakuhan had mentioned that, so I have not dared try to injure one."

“Sorry, what?” Suzu walked back over to her desk, picking up Saya’s kunai. “The parasite gives you medical benefits?” Being a medical ninja, she was quite offended by the fact that an irritating parasite was able to perform the same tasks that she could, possibly with less energy. But it made sense. She wouldn’t need a medical ninja to tag along with her during missions, and by now, the parasite probably knew how Saya functioned, making it easier for it to aid her in battle. “Had the finger been regrown? Or did the vines attach finger back to the hand?”

The fact that she was greatly untroubled and willing to demonstrate was uncomforting. Yet, at the same time, it showed that she had faith and experience with the parasite, which also, was uncomforting, but reassuring. “I’m thinking that we start off with minor injuries, including cuts, stabs and possibly bruises. Then, after I see that you’re completely healed, which, hopefully won’t take too long, we’ll move onto the major injuries.” This assisted experiment went against everything Suzu believed in, and she wasn’t looking forward to stabbing one of her patients.

But what happens if Suzu finds the parasite to be useless? Perhaps her quick recoveries were the effects of an unnatural immune system? And if it actually did have medical abilities, does the parasite have a mind when choosing whether or not to heal a specific wound? Although she was curious about the vines’ capability, she was more interested in Saya’s wellbeing. But somehow, Saya’s faithfulness in the vines kept Suzu from further questions.

Raising the kunai over Saya’s arm, Suzu swiftly glided the blade from her wrist to halfway towards her elbow. Blood began flowing out from the cut, spilling on the desk. Suzu’s other hand glowed blue, in case the parasite ends up being ineffective.

"It's a little strange. Easier to show than explain. The vines can grow into a limb if one is not present, however they can also be used to reattach a body part. The vine is capable of some very grizzly things I have no access to testing. I once saw Kakuhan call an entire suit of skin from a storage scroll. The vine was able to assemble it on him as a new skin after he had been baddly burned." Saya falls quiet as Suzu approaches her arm with the knife. She was surprisingly calm for someone that was about to be cut open, but one could only remain so calm. There was still a sense of apprehension around her as she waited. Saya was still human, after all.

Saya's skin seperates as normally as any other person's would when exposed to the sharp edge of her knife. The similiarities between Saya and normal humans, however, would end just about there. Saya's blood oozes to the surface a little slower than would have been expected, and is somewhat lacking in the normal bright red color one should expect. Indeed, Saya's blood was closer to brown, resulting from the mix of green and red. It was a rather sickly color, and ran thicker than it should. It seeps down her arm as gravity would insist, and only a moment after the cut was formed it's begin to heal. Tiny threads of light red vines snake from within the wound.

Watching them close it was possible to see the magic at work. Mimicking tens of stitches at once, tiny vines reach across the small wound, and sink into the skin on the otherside. The vines pull the cut closed, and a moment later the bleeding has stopped. Small stitches remain on the surface for now, marking where the small cut had been made. "See.." Saya says a moment later, a little quietly. "They do it on their own, I can't control it. I am not sure how it does it, but I do know that it completely closes off access to my chakra when it does. I'm not really super good at chakra control anyway, but when the vines are healing me, I can't use my chakra at all."

Not only did the vines have supernatural healing abilities, they were also able to transform into necessary body parts when needed. It was as if she had everything she needed right at her disposal. From what Suzu had learned about the parasite, the benefits overshadowed the drawbacks. “They sound like stem cells,” Suzu said, putting the kunai down, “The similarities are there, such as the capability of transformation, but unlike a stem cell, the parasite is more complex. I don’t think I’ll be able to find anything that corresponds completely with the vines.” Too bad. Suzu was hoping to compare the vines to something she knew to aid her in understanding the parasite.

She quickly differentiated between Saya’s blood and normal blood. The ordinary crimson flow was substituted with a more dense sickly brown slowly trickling down her forearm and onto the desk. Writing the findings on her clipboard, she watched the wound as it opened; as it should have. Moments later, red, thin, thread-like vines emerged from each end of the wound, sinking itself on the other side, bringing the separated skin to a close and the bleeding to a stop. Having been assured that the wound had been healed, she ran her fingers across the scar.

“First of all, that’s not normal.” Suzu had heard of healing abilities, but to perform those, one needed to use chakra. Perhaps that’s why the parasite blocks Saya’s chakra reserve. But the vines heal instantaneously— “Second of all, have there been times when the vines didn’t heal a wound on your body? Or do they make sure that you’re completely free of cuts and bruises?” If the latter was the case, that would explain her rare visits to the hospital.

“I doubted the parasite’s healing abilities, but after seeing that, I don’t think I’ll need any more proof. Besides, bruises can take too long to appear, and I’m not too keen on intentionally testing the vines with deadly poisons to your body.” She removed the paper from the clipboard, folded it in half and put it in a drawer. “From what I have seen and learned, is that I could cut you one hundred times, and the vines will appear one hundred times to heal those cuts. I believe the parasite has nestled quite comfortably in your body, and has gotten to know you quite well. It’s almost as if it’s protecting you. Which, in my opinion, is quite odd, but nonetheless beneficial. I can see why you have no intention of removing it..”
