Spoiler:
"Ngh...hmmmn....gah!" The woman grunted and writhed against the force holding her down. Her nails dug deep into the dusty ground beneath her, desperately seeking freedom. Her breathing was fast and ragged, her eyes wide and filled with anger. There was light being cast around her, illuminating the immediate area but fading to absolute darkness a few metres out. The light fell on the only other figure present, stood over the woman and staring down at her. The anonymous person held an arm out, shortly followed by the other. Hands met in the middle and started moving at an astonishing speed. "Bastard!" The woman spat, tears of rage at the hopelessness of the situation cascading down her cheek, splashing against the ground and drying up in the dust. "I'll rip you to pieces! Agh!" She screamed, continuing to thrash about wildly. The figure halted its intricate movements and murmured a reply. "I doubt it." The voice was deep and certainly masculine. But there was no ambiguity as to its owner. It belonged to Hajiro Rakumi, a notorious criminal nin and long-standing enemy of the woman under duress - Uriko Nagase. When they had last met, the female had taken all that marked Hajiro as a man. The scene unfolding in the town thoroughfare was his form of revenge. A moment of silence passed and Uriko ceased struggling, recognizing the thick tension in the air. A small ball of black chakra formed just above the kunoichi, pulsating with a terrifyingly dark and powerful energy. The ball instantly transformed into a large vertical spike, impaling Uriko's left shoulder. The woman's scream echoed through the streets, a rending, piercing howl of pain and terror. Even the bone-dry earth below couldn't absorb the blood as fast as it emerged, and the woman felt her consciousness rapidly slipping away frpm her. The darkness enclosing the pair drew in, casting shade over Hajiro and eventually obscuring the entire scene from view...

Thump. A slender figure hit the floor amidst a tangle of light, white sheets. "Get...get off of me!" The woman snarled, tearing through the fabric and sitting bolt upright. Her heavy breathing and wide eyes belied her situation. A guest in a lonely household, distanced from normal civilization, she was under no threat whatsoever - for the first time in quite a while, too. The couple who owned the building had welcomed her in when she arrived on their doorstep, even going so far as to prepare a spare bedroom for her. Uriko was not used to such luxury or kindness. She had been thrown by this and as a reward, had only left the pair unconscious, instead of killing them. That said, her mood was cruelly temperamental and the husband and wife were still in considerable danger. For now, at least, the female nukenin was occupied with her own troubles. The nightmare was nothing unusual, it came to her often. Tonight's had been more vivid though and the sweat on Uriko's brow was evidence enough. Hajiro had left his mark on the kunoichi, even this long after she had ended his life. It was part of what kept her mind at the very precipice of sanity, treading a thin, blurred line between lucid and psychotic. Her breathing had slowed now, deeper but with more control. The panic subsided and Uriko threw the remains of the sheet to the floor before climbing back onto the bed and sitting with her back against the headboard. "Hell." She muttered, running her hand through her hair and sighing wearily. She hadn't taken the spare clothes her hosts had offered, instead going straight to the bedroom to sleep. Her gaze fell upon her still aching flesh. Her body had healed for the most part, but there were still wounds at risk of infection, despite the coagulated blood. Not a new infection of course, but one or more could have set in before she had made her injuries safe. Uriko had devoted years of training to her physical endurance and a viral infection wouldn't even come close to killing her. The only reason she wanted to flush her body of any toxins was a matter of pride. She had gained a reputation as a medical ninja, albeit a dark and sadistic one. The way Uriko saw it, it wouldn't do to have someone of her stature walking about under the effects of a common toxin. Her lip curled at the very thought.

As dusty ceiling boards swam into view, Uriko slowly became aware of the soft material underneath her and the downy cushions propping up her head. She managed a rasping groan, her senses still groggy as she took her time to come to. Even her memory was having trouble catching up. The last thing she remembered... A sharp intake of breath accompanied the dread realisation. There was no feeling in her left arm. Nothing at all. In her heart, she knew exactly what she would find, but couldn't help her right arm reaching across her body. Her fingers fumbled toward the opposite shoulder and she struggled to keep them from trembling. A low, aching moan escaped her lips as her fingers clasped desperately at the space where her left arm had once been. She pawed in vain at the scarred stump at her shoulder, unable to hold in bitter tears at her discovery. But Uriko was not one to let hopelessness consume her. Her desolation soon became anger and then determination to prove the disfiguring injury would not hold her back. Twisting her body she managed to roll out of the bed, landing awkwardly on the floor. The dull pain in her knees as they connected with the hard boards below only served to rile the already emotional woman. Using the bed to aid her, the kunoichi staggered to her feet. She tried to calm herself with a few measured breaths before tentatively pushing one foot forward. Almost immediately, she felt her limb buckle and she collapsed in a heap. The loss of her arm had left her totally unbalanced. It seemed she really would have to learn everything from scratch. There was a knock at the door. "Miss?" A kindly voice called out through the woodwork. "I heard noises. Are you... awake? Are you okay?" The man persisted, sounding genuinely concerned. Uriko snorted derisively. If only he knew. She thought silently to herself. Her reputation was nefarious and well-established but her image, apparently, was not. "I'm fine." She called out, rather weakly. "Stay... stay out." She instructed, hoping that the visitor would simply leave without further questions. Breathing a sigh of relief when she heard footsteps travelling down a nearby set of stairs, Uriko heaved herself onto the bed. Her senses had cleared now and her attention turned to the wound. Her medical understanding was limited - her physical conditoning had always kept her from needing much attention of the sort. Her mind whirred, sifting through her knowledge but finding nothing useful. Her next decision took her life in a new, darker direction but was made in an instant. If medical expertise was what she required, then medical expertise she would seek.

"There was a bed back then, too..." The woman mumbled under her breath, struck by the likeness of her current situation to the one she'd been recalling. Thankfully her wounds were not so severe this time around. Giving her head a brief shake, she set about her work. Her hand grasped at her hip but didn't find what she had been seeking. A quick glance around the room solved the mystery - her hip pouch was on the bedside dresser. Flicking the latch open, she delved in and withdrew her ever-useful jar of healing salve. It had been significantly depleted over the last twenty-four hours, but plenty remained to tend to her current injuries. She placed it to one side for now, instead swapping the pouch for another dresser-stored item. A small scroll, bound with grey fabric was brought onto the bed and unfurled. A quick set of hand seals followed. Then, bringing her thumb to her mouth and giving the tip a sharp bite, she smeared the blood across a small section of the parchment. "Kuchiyose." She muttered as a small, opaque cloud of smoke burst from the scroll. It cleared within moments and a collection of herbs and liquid-filled jars appeared, along with a small syringe. One conical flask and one test tube were empty. Uriko immediately picked a blue flowering herb from amongst her ingredients and broke it into pieces, before dropping them into the flask. Another herb (rather plain-looking in comparison to the first) followed the same process. As the two plants touched, they both wilted rapidly, becoming indistinguishable mulch at the base of the otherwise empty flask. Reaching now for the liquids, the kunoichi held a small jar up to the light streaming through the window. Not even the smallest peal of light broke through the thick substance, which was soon being carefully measured into the conical flask. Lastly, Uriko uncorked a small glass bottle that looked like it held water. In fact it was, but anyone might be forgiven for thinking it something else given the array of fascination chemicals on show. The woman added it to the other ingredients and shook the flask gently, watching them combine into a navy-coloured substance with fragments of organic matter floating in it. Uriko tore a patch of the bedsheet off and placed it over the open top of the empty test tube. Slowly and carefully, she poured the liquid from the flask to its new container. The fabric caught every last bit of mulch and the essence of the concoction seeped through. Uriko smiled. "A draught to cure all ails. How about that." She mutttered, sinking the tip of the syringe in and withdrawing a shot of the liquid. Tapping the needle to remove the excess, she slid it calmly into her neck and pressed the stopper.

The medicine was a simple but little-known recipe, using some very select ingredients. An elderly herbalist had taught it to her, along with a small collection of useful remedies and just one interesting toxin. Uriko had not felt the slightest remorse for the old lady - she had been nearing death anyway. The navy-coloured mixture she had just ingested targeted damaged flesh, traveling with the bloodstream's natural flow to reach target areas. Once there, it bonded with the white blood cells and allowed them to eliminate all foreign bodies that were not intrinsically stronger than they were. The kunoichi knew she would have felt the effects had an infection that could overcome this panacea set in. Packing her antidote and poison laboratory back into the scroll, she placed it on the dresser once more and took the healing balm in hand. This happened to be another of Uriko's cures, developed from biological materials in the human body, it acted as an antiseptic that encouraged coagulation and combatted inflammation and swelling. There were numerous incisions to treat, and the female shinobi spent almost half an hour on just this simple task. For a woman with extreme temperament issues, she managed to remain calm, collected and patient throughout her medical work. A less well-informed individual might say she felt most comfortable under the guise of surgeon, or doctor. The truth was that she took pride in her demonstrating her ability, with every exacting step of applying medicinal techniques. Her prowess had built her a new, fearsome reputation and even attracted the most unlikely of investors - the Shantakai. But even as advanced as her knowledge and skill were, Uriko had never been able to find or devise a means of restoring her arm. The fragment of tainted chakra that Hajiro had placed within, embedded in the very stub of flesh he'd given her, seemed to resist all known means of healing, restoration, replication or transplantation. Healing techniques were obviously of no good, as there was no flesh to heal. Restoration had almost been successful. Uriko had managed to grow a new arm for all of five seconds. The new limb rotted as quickly as it had emerged, dissipating into thin air. Replication had failed without even getting an appendage onto the stub of a shoulder and transplantation... well, there were now more organ (or rather, limb) donors in the world than ever before.

It was something the kunoichi had learned to accept. Her medical skills were second to none and if she could not fix her condition, then no one could. The most accomplished surgeon who could not save her own skin. It would have driven a lesser man to madness. It did Uriko.
