The young stranger, formerly know as Ken, had retired to the woods outside of Konoha to better attune himself. Out in the dense woods and green meadows there was little that could distract the young man from his endeavor. He had been tasked by his mentor, Akima Nabuto, to refine and increase his chakra pool. If he was to be a decent medical ninja, he would be in need of much chakra to heal those wounded in battle.

He had delved deep into the woods and had found a natural spring. The small brook that ensued from it would eventually join a river. The cold water was a good medium by which Ken had to concentrate his chakra. He sat cross legged in meditation on top of the shallow waters. He exuded chakra trough his thighs and legs so as to stay above water. If he ever lost concentration or was running low on chakra, the cold waters would let him know with a shivering reminder. To further deplete his reserves, he would perform intense calisthenics and perform chakra consuming jutsu. He would draw just enough chakra to make him pass out but not put him in any form of danger. He had been tasked with increasing his reserves not with dying. Perhaps one day he would have to make the choice but at the moment his mind was filled with ways to produce results.

Three weeks have passed since Ken had arrived at the natural spring. He slept under the stars and he hunted for his food. To any passerby he would have looked like a feral human. His hair was much longer than his normal shoulder length. It was even unrulier, if that was even possible. His clothes and shoes were worn and torn where he had snagged a tree branch or scrapped against a rock in his chase for food or on his ever changing self imposed physical training routines. The days had started to merge one with another. He only stopped his training to answer nature calls and to hunt for his food. There were times he was so exhausted that he did not know if he was dreaming or actually performing the task that he saw himself doing as if an outer body experience.
He had trained his mind to sense when he was starting to be at the limit of his chakra. He would feel the strain his body felt as he tried to produce just an ounce more. Because the chakra lines were connected to vital organs, he made sure not to strain it too much. It was not unheard of somebody dying from chakra exhaustion. The young man did not care to be another statistic. He had a promise to keep. If he was to become a good Medical Nin there should be nothing that he would not be willing to try.

There were times when doubt started to settle in. He wondered if all this was even working. He did not feel any different. But one is not able to see the small changes because they are just the same as the day before. Only those seeing from the outside, seeing with fresh unbiased eyes can truly say when a change has happened. Ken would just have to trust that his mentor was correct and that exerting the mind, body and spirit, would lead to a more vast reserve.
It was not until the next to last day that he felt any true change. He was chasing a rabbit that would hopefully be his meal. His muscles were crying for rest but he could not let his first substantial meal in days escape. He animal headed for some rocks and Ken knew that if he let it near one of those holes he would not see the rabbit again. He dug deep inside him and miraculously produce enough chakra to send a bolt of electricity flying towards the ill fated rabbit. The bolt was strong enough to stop the poor creature’s heart but in doing so, it made Ken’s race. He had finally achieved what he had set out to do.
He slept peacefully that night, his belly full and his mind at rest knowing that he could go back having completed his task.
