Custom hand seals?

well, I've been thinking a bit about some jutsu, when I remembered something. In the official fan book, it states that some jutsu use hand seals other than the twelve basic ones. For instance, Naruto has the one he uses with Kage bushin, and the Yamanaka have that special one for mind control. I just wanted to know, What is the rule on that?
TBH i don't see much point for them, as they are of little importance. But i also think it would be a cool thing and adds character. And if they are allowed, can it be for any odd ninja, or would it have to be a ninja who came from a custom clan with a custom hand sign?

I really see no problem on making custom hand seals. It's as you say, they aren't important at all, but yeah, I would say that it's ok. Don't know for others though.

Though you should keep in mind you wouldn't be able to use a string of custom hand seals, probably just one. But as both of you have established above, we aren't big on hand seals here anyway.
