Temperance [Training] Vide

A bright and full orb illuminated the slumbering village of Getsugakure. It was not unusual for the moon to be so large, so close in this region. Indeed, some even contested that this was the true etymology of the island's name - rather than it's natural, crescent shape. The moonlight would have cast an eerie atmosphere were the night time not so blissfully silent. For somewhere that was known for tourism, for dockyards and seafaring traders during the day, the complete lack of movement and noise after sunset was startling. A poet, visiting the area many decades ago, had described it as 'never golden, but a silver silence just as pure'. It was one of the reasons that many put up with the hustle and bustle of Getsugakure under the sun. And it was no different for the lone figure who slipped from alley to alley, prowling the cobbled streets. She made no noise to disturb the stillness and only the keenest of eyes could have ever noticed the flickering shadow as she darted about. From a darkened corner, she glanced up into the sky. Her features were illuminated, if only for a second. Piercing, amber eyes glinted and a stern expression held them in place. And then... gone; only a soft breeze to tell tales of where she had stood.

Uriko had come to the island seeking a little peace and quiet, but her restless nature hounded her even while she slept. Only an hour of shut-eye before the woman had woken, unable to fall back into unconscious comfort. Instead, she had dressed in basic cloth garb and run out into the night, hoping to wear herself down. Agile as ever, the kunoichi had wasted no time testing herself amongst the maze of houses and streets in the village centre. She could not afford to disturb the sleeping citizens, so her efforts had been concentrated on speed and stealth. Now, as she emerged from the thicket of buildings into the sparser outskirts, Uriko realised she was no better off. Her exploits so far had only served to pump adrenalin through her body, ensuring she would be awake for a good few hours now. Sighing as she realised this truth, the woman headed for the nearest open space, just beyond the walls of Getsugakure. Almost as soon as the frankly useless fortifications were behind her, Uriko skidded to a halt. In one swift motion, she brought her hand up and finished the set of seals she had been forming.

In fact, the female nukenin had been preparing for this technique since she had chosen the leave the village confines. It required her to draw chakra together, a great amount, and bring it under her control. It was a jutsu she rarely employed, given the devastation that it caused and moreover, the danger to her own life if she used up too much chakra. A faint sound - laughter - echoed inside her head at the thought. The voice often haunted her, causing the woman to bite her lip hard as she released the technique. One! Uriko appeared beside a large, gnarled tree trunk and thrust her shaking palm straight into it. A roaring, screeching sound erupted as a mass of chakra burst forth. It engulfed the mid-section of the tree, leaving nothing but dust and sending tremors through the air as the immediate locale was ripped apart. Amidst the destruction, it was just possible to see the star-like shape the chakra took, before it collapsed in on itself. The kunoichi had already moved, reaching unbelievable speeds as she approached a tree much deeper into the forest. Again, that terrible sound. Again, the ground shuddered and the air convulsed and again, the woman disappeared, littering the earth behind her with debris.

Panting, Uriko came to a halt. She cursed the limits of her technique, wanting to push her body still further. But three shots had cut a ravaging swath through the trees and she only had to look over her shoulder to see the path, stretching almost a kilometre back to the village and marked by three areas of individual devastation. Drawing a deep breath, Uriko tried to gather chakra again. It trickled through her body this time and she struggled to keep it under control. As the energy grew in quantity, her ability to manage is depleted and it soon dissipated, like a raindrop crashing into the ground. "Agh!" She cried, exasperated. The woman knew the effect her taijutsu would have on her body and chakra, but often felt compelled to try and break this restriction. Now, as it had been on previous attempts, her frustration merely boiled over and she ended up slamming her hand into a nearby tree trunk. at once, the wood gave way and burst apart, sending the top of the giant plant tumbling away. It soon came to a stop, crashing into the base of one of its kin. After watching the scene unfold, the female nukenin merely rolled her eyes and moved on.

As she walked, Uriko brought her hand up to her face and inspected it. Precision in moulding chakra was supposed to be the mark of a exceptional medic - and she was exceptional. But the conservation that the true masters had achieved was still something that eluded the criminal kunoichi. She had surpassed her peers many times over, proven her strength, endurance and skill too many times to recount. Despite all of that, she felt shamed by her lack of control. She threw a glance over her shoulder at the jagged tree stump she'd just created, wondering if her temper was the key. For someone who was so calm in the face of danger, Uriko was remarkably susceptible to anger when confronted with her own failings. And it was no longer just a matter of pride, either. She had been genuinely shaken by the news that her... affliction would be the death of her if she ever expended too much chakra. If she was to survive the other criminals, to live long enough to make her mark on this world, it would require a greater lifespan than that attached to her current prognosis.

Her resolve tested, her determination re-affirmed, Uriko strode through the woods with purpose. With each step she tried calling on the smallest possible amount of chakra, before letting it secede quietly. Her chakra became like a neverending wave, pushing up against the sandy shore before retreating to regain its strength. Minutes flew by, hours followed. It wasn't until the very first signs of dawn that the kunoichi even noticed the time she was spending on the exercise. Gather, hold, release. Gather, hold... Monotonous as it was, Uriko had become absorbed in her task. Even now, as she emerged from the other end of the forest, her thoughts were focused and calm. But perhaps some of that was tiredness. Indeed, the woman did not even notice when she walked right over the surface of a stream. Nor did she realise that in doing so, not one iota of chakra had been expended.
