I'm off to Japan for two weeks on Monday. I'll have internet (I think) and will keep in touch - just don't expect posts! I might have some time today, possibly tomorrow to chat, post etc.

Hey all! Lots of photos, don't you worry. I'm in Osaka at the moment, but using that as a base to explore nearby areas (including the Nara region). Next week I'm in Kyoto. Here, it's busy, humid and colourful (though quite urban immediately around the hotel) - and I think I'm the only Westerner in the area!

Flight was loooong, still recovering from jet lag, but I managed to fit in a short trip to Osaka-jo (Osaka Castle) yesterday afternoon. Enjoyed some yummy street food and was given an impromptu tour of the nearby shrine by a kind local man.

Hey guys,

Really nice to hear from you all - it is a little isolating being out here alone. Still recovering from jet lag and adjusting my sleeping patterns, so I awoke at about 2am and couldn't settle again (despite numerous efforts). So I eventually got up about 8am, left the hotel at 9 and headed off to Osaka Aquarium, in the Tempozan district. The aquarium is one of the largest ever and has (I think) the biggest main tank in the world - which houses, amongst other things, a Whale Shark and Manta Ray. Really enjoyed it here, especially the cuuuutte sea otter who was rolling about in the water and washing him/herself. The penguins were adorable too, and seeing a whale shark and manta ray... speaks for itself really. Ooh, and also, some weird and wonderful jellyfish.

Anyway, Photo(s) of the Day:

I grabbed some tasty ramen (Dashi broth, udon noodles, seaweed, scallions, and something else yummy) before heading home and falling straight asleep at 3.30pm. *sigh* Stupid... jet... lag. Midnight feast shopping trip just now, got some Sake and snacks. Not sure what I bought to eat, so it's a bit like Russian roulette with food. Hopefully getting to sleep in the next couple of hours. I'm off to the Nara region tomorrow, to see Yoshino - the best Sakura viewing spot in Japan. Weather is set to be gently sunny, 18 degrees C. Whee, excited!

I am keeping my eyes peeled for kitsune... I saw something called "kitsune ramen", which I now know is ramen topped with deep-fried tofu pockets. Not quite what I had in mind, but a good start!
