| “Kimi… Kimi… wake up…” Kimiko’s father was trying in vain to wake his teenage daughter from her precious beauty sleep, and wasn’t succeeding. She groaned, cracked open one eyelid lazily, and then flopped back over onto her other side to escape the protesting. She knew what was happening today, and didn’t particularly want to get up. Today was the day that they would be travelling to Kaminari no Kuni, The Lightning Country.
It would probably seem quite unusual why Kimiko didn’t want to go travelling somewhere new, and the reason was a strange one indeed. She was nervous. More so than she ever had been in all of her life. She could only think of one other instance when she was this nervous, and that was while she and Toshiro parted ways two years ago. Why was she so nervous about travelling? It wasn’t because of bandits, or other rogue shinobi on the way; goodness no, she had faith in her new skills and her father’s skills to keep them safe while travelling. It was because she would be meeting her extended family, those on her father’s side of the family tree. She was so used to just her and her father, and before that her, her mother and her father that the thought of a big family scared her slightly. She didn’t know any of their names, what they were like, what their village of residence, Kumogakure, was like… to say that she was fifteen years of age, it was quite strange that she was nervous of something so small by comparison of what she was used to.
Her father was well aware of why Kimiko was refusing to get up when she was usually an early riser, and sighed softly. “Come on now, Kimi, it’ll be okay. Everybody’s so eager to meet you.” He placed a hand on the girl’s shoulder and shook her gently. “And I’ll be there. You’ve got nothing to worry about; it’s your family.” He smiled, and slowly, Kimiko rolled over to look her father in the eye. She remained silent for quite some time, her gaze not shifting from the kind bright blue orbs in front of her until finally, she gave in and nodded her head. “Okay dad…” She muttered, pushing back her bed covers and sitting up in the place they had called home for two years, a cave. A mighty fine cave, of course. It was quite small with there only being enough room for two beds and a campfire. Incense burnt slowly at each corner, and candles made from wilderness’s bounty lit the place as if they were actually electric lamps. A hermit would have been proud to live there.
Kimiko went about her morning routine as quickly as she could, because as her father pointed out, they were late due to her shenanigans in bed up until this point. She washed in the waterfall below their cave, dried her hair straight and pulled on some comfortable travelling wear; a red tank top, short blue skirt with matching shorts underneath and black ninja sandals. She put her hair up in a high ponytail and crossed two black chopsticks through the ponytail itself to keep it in place. As soon as she was ready and had only essentials packed, they destroyed their beautiful cave and removed all traces of human activity. When they returned from Kumogakure, they wouldn’t be going back to the cave, so there was no need to keep it.
And so, left up to her father’s amazing directional skills, they set off for their destination that seemed so far away. |
