| Since I need to redo an old summon to conform to the new rules on jutsu I thought I might as well ask this.
Is it possible to upgrade the rank of a summon you already have to your current one, and if so how?
My first instinct says that since we're treating summons as jutsu (in regards to xp costs) it would be the same as with a multi-rank jutsu. You pay the cost for the rank you want them at plus any ranks in between that and their current rank. The other, and more expensive, alternative I can see working (if upgrading is possible) would be to have to pay the difference in jutsu cost between what the current rank can have and what the new one can have. As an example, to bring a C-ranked summon up to B-rank under the former would take 15 CP while under the later it would take 36 CP (6 CP for 1 extra C-rank and 30 CP for 2 B-ranks). |

| I'm a tad confused at what your propositions are. How it works now is rather simple. It works out exactly like the jutsu upgrades. You can purchase the next rank (thus 15EXP to go from C-rank to B-rank); however you can't really go back down a rank. You have to remember summons are living creatures IC. They cannot just become weaker and stronger at a whim. I'd suggest switching an old summon out for a newer one. It would still cost you EXP naturally, and you'd obviously need to write this new summon; but then again you'd need to do both for the upgrade anyway. The summon just wouldn't be allowed to go up more than 1 rank for realistic purposes. |

| First, what you describe for the current system is how I suspected it would work. The problem I had was that it was no where said or implied how it worked under the systems or summons guides. The second one was the other alternative that made some sort of logic given what information was available.
Two, I know he's a living character (he even plays a non-combat role in more than a few of my posts). Its that my character has gone from genin to jounin and aged (after Kimiko and I get done with our interim threads) 7 years. Since his first summon has spent the majority of those years alongside him I figured the summon would have to have "grownup" some as well, and he needed to be updated to fit with the rules changes that were put in after he was created. The only way both could be done under the rules in a way that made sense was if he moved up a rank.
You may consider this solved, and I suggest mentioning that summons can move up one rank in the appropriate section of the relevant rules & guides. That way people might not hold off on getting an actual summon early on, and making it as much a part of the character as a "tool", without worry about said summon effectively becoming obsolete after they rank up a few times. |

| Final ruling: You may upgrade summons at a later time as long as it makes chronological and In Character sense. I believe this is.. Solved! |
