Tanaka, Kyousuu [Konoha Genin // Four-Tails Jinchuuriki] Kyousu10

TANAKA, KYOUSUU

THE INFO.

Name: Tanaka, Kyousuu
Nickname: -
Age: 20
Gender: Male

Appearance:

One of the first things that most people notice about Kyousuu is his hair.  Not due to its almost chocolate brown color, but its length - particularly in the back - as it's naturally straight.  This makes it appear longer at first glance.  Its uneven cut is something that Kyou is extremely particular about, though he couldn't even tell you himself what the reasoning is.  All he knows is that its the way he's always worn his hair, and he prefers to keep it that way.  From his bangs to the slightly-past-shoulder-length sections that drape down in front of his ears to the long back section, it's all been the result of careful, meticulous work.  Most comments about his hairstyle (which range from compliments to borderline insults) are met with a shrug and a glance to the side, but are occasionally met with a simple, "I guess".  If asked in particular about the section that he keeps tied up (it's shorter than the rest of his hair in the back), Kyousuu will respond, once again, with a shrug and a glance to the side, but with the addition of a remark that's usually along the lines of, "I dunno, it's...'quirky', I guess," which is accompanied by air quotes, something he's known to do quite frequently in his everyday speech.

Under his rather lengthy head of hair, there's soft, pale skin.  Not only has this been the most popular topic among those who haven't said a word to him for as long as he's been around, but the most commonly exchanged remarks have been about how a boys' skin shouldn't be so pasty.  Of course, this isn't the only thing that's been labled about him as "de-masculizing", but it certainly isn't the least-mentioned.  A soft, slender (albeit slightly long) nose leads to a rather small pair of lips, which lie under his deep, emerald-green eyes.  The two slender gems are accented by rather long lashes, which are typically hidden under his bangs - though noticeable enough if one were to take a good look at him.  Shaped in a manner that makes them look near seductive, Kyou's eyes seem to mirror his small, pointed chin.  Overall, his face is one that could be considered a mask, as its appearance is one that seems to hide what's underneath.  There is more to him than the softness that is given off by his appearance.

At six feet tall, he's not your average 15 year-old boy.  Though his shoulders aren't very broad, they do hold a strength about them that seems to contradict the rest of his appearance.  Below them, a rather slender physique that seems to be more beneficial in the sense that it keeps him light, allowing him to be a bit quicker.  On the other hand, it could be perceived as detrimental, as the thin muscles are hidden under his rather long torso.  It's been debated whether this longer torso versus longer legs in comparison was more masculine than the latter, but since his legs aren't very short, it leaves him in a sort of limbo on the argument.  For some obscure reason, Kyousuu has a habit of keeping his nails painted what most would describe as a toxic purple color.  Despite the fact that he doesn't wear this color anywhere else, he's refused to change it, likely due to the fact that it's much easier to replace the same color each time rather than change the color to match.

Kyousuu's typical outfit consists of a good amount of layers; A fishnet shirt hidden under an indian red long-sleeved shirt, which in turn is partially covered by a black, zipped up, black, cloth jacket.  Said jacket would be considered more of a mix between a vest and a jacket, as it has short sleeves, and it stops about mid-way, revealing the red shirt underneath.  Its borders are marked by a yellowish tint, which is also present on a strip of color that can be seen on each sleeve.  In addition, the red Uzumaki symbol, which is present on most uniforms, can be seen on each of his shoulders.  Loose, black pants drape down to his knees, where they draw in to a white wrap that's akin to a bandage.  This extends all the way down his leg, only covered by his traditional black shinobi sandals (which reveal toes painted in the same color as his finger nails).  Bright red straps highlight his pockets, which usually contain his hands.  To top it off, he always wears what is best described as a black collar, as it's skin-tight and worn around his neck.  On his days off, he prefers to wear shorts and loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts.

The way he carries himself is yet another noticeable quirk of his.  Sure, he always stands up straight and keeps his head held just right - not quite up, but not down, either - but it's in his walk.  One would almost imagine him in a festively decorated kimono with a paper fan and all.  Sometimes he walks with his hands clasped behind him and a slight wobble, if he's in an extremely good mood.  Usually, though, he walks with such balance that he would be able to keep a stack of plates on his head, without breaking a single one.  He steps lightly and carefully, making sure not to move too much.  Even his hands would be in his pockets.  Yet there are other times when his walk would be distinctly different.  The humming and the bit of swagger in his gait leave an impression of being lofty, in a sense.

Forehead Protector: Kyou's forehead protector is tied around his upper (right) arm, as in the picture above.

Personality:

If there's one thing to be said about Kyousuu in terms of his personality, most would use the word 'odd'.  Even Kyou himself doesn't have a way to describe himself in simple terms.  He often explains it by comparing it to a series of novels.  If you pick up a book from the middle of a series that's reliant on your knowledge of the previous installations, you'll be one confused reader.  One trait of his personality, without the others, wouldn't quite cut it in any sort of auto-biography, or any other biography, for that matter.  That being said, it requires a finely-tuned breakdown of various example situations, and - wait, hold on.  That's even too complex for Kyousuu to handle.  We'll make it as simple as possible.

As far as first impressions go, Kyousuu doesn't usually make the best.  He's typically the person that people meet for the first time and awkwardly say their goodbyes, usually avoiding him.  Not because he's UNlikable, but because he's just plain strange to most people.  He has a way of speaking that leaves people wondering what exactly his "interests" are - exaggerated intonation, a lot of gasps and sighs, you name it.  Even most women wouldn't compare to this one, but he hasn't bothered to try and drop the habit.  After all, if anyone was worth his attention, they'd be able to get past this initial obstacle, right?  Well, maybe not exactly, but it's nice to think about.  Speaking of, well, speech patterns, Kyou has a habit of ending almost everything he says with 'ki~', which some have considered more than a bit of nuisance.  In fact, he tends to give people nicknames that end with -ki, even when it's far from fitting.  This can make it a bit of a challenge for many to tolerate him.  The thing is, this isn't usually noticeable unless he's actually having a conversation with someone.  Other than that, he appears very calm and collected.

Kyousuu can often come across as callous.  He doesn't openly express concern for anyone other than himself, unless it's a 'poor little creature' in trouble, such as a lost dog or cat.  This is mostly due to his 'sticks and stones' attitude, which he developed over time as a result of his environment.  He would never go so far as to actually physically harm anyone unless it was necessary, but for the most part, most people don't seem to have any influence on him.  Animals, on the other hand, are another story.  Of course, due to his being around his family's pets very often, he's often had the desire to acquire one of his own, but not just for the purpose of looking adorable.  What would make him happy more than anything else is to have a shinobi animal, such as a dog, perhaps.  One that would be more useful and would probably understand him better than a normal animal would.  Then again, even just the prospect of companionship from an animal would be appealing enough.

On the subject of companionship, Kyou is one to dodge almost every question.  Not necessarily because he wanted to avoid it completely, but because he's had his own experiences that lead him to be less quick to trust anyone.  After all, it would be difficult to begin trusting people when every other person in one's past contributed to your becoming nothing more than just a container for a monster, right?  Among all of the little ways that he operates, this is one of the few that's been affected by his past.  He tries not to let anything else change him, as he was taught by a select few not to let others change him.  In that regard, he's let them down, but at the same time, he knows that the opposite is also true.  As a result, he's usually very particular about the company he keeps, if any at all.  It's a completely different story when it comes to the people he's even remotely trusted with anything.  That list has shrunk so much over time that it has almost diminished completely.

Fortunately, it is possible to get past this initially hidden barrier, though it's extremely difficult unless you know exactly what you're doing.  Even just time spent with him won't help, as time is just simply time to him, and doesn't mean anything special.  Words would only help if they were exactly the right ones.  To get to Kyousuu, it takes careful execution.  It could take many, many actions that would show some form of trust to convince him, even if he only lets up just a little bit.  Despite the difficulty, it shouldn't necessarily be a deterrent for those teamed up with Kyousuu.  Though it seems hopeless, there are reasons why some people in the past have made the effort to crack open his shell (Yes, it does seem crazy, but it's not an impossible feat).  The most difficult part is recognizing whether you've actually managed to do this or not, as he's grown very skilled at hiding the way he truly feels.

Energetic is another word that could be used to describe him.  He's okay when walking around, but there will be hell to pay if he's prevented from moving at all.  Unless, of course, he's asleep, but even then he's a very wild sleeper.  It's not recommended to sleep anywhere near him unless there's a barrier of some kind between him and the other sleeping individuals.  If he's not moving, he gets extremely agitated, because it makes him feel as though he's not being productive.  This is one reason why his initial training, particularly with chakra control, was unsuccessful.  It took many, many tries for him to get it simply because he always had 'ants in his pants'.  Yoga has proven to be a challenge (and a bit of a bore) for him as well.  This itch of his has been somewhat softened, but his ability to perform stunts with little effort has helped him cope.  When prompted to remain still, he often does a few flips and such in order to 'get his jitters out' ahead of time.

Sentimentality isn't completely alien to Kyousuu.  He does have a soft side to him, though it's more or less in the deepest, darkest part of his heart.  It's there, though, pinky swear!  Just because it's almost impossible to see doesn't mean it doesn't exist!  Think about ants!  They're difficult to notice unless they're in large quantities!  Well, Kyou would notice - and avoid stepping on - a single ant if he were to encounter one.  Watch out, though!  If he does get sentimental, you'll need an umbrella.  Once he finds a suitable shoulder, you'd better believe that he WILL cry on it.  Ahem.

The list of things that he likes isn't the most extensive, but it's good to know.  If you're one of the ones that decided they want to try their hand at taming this flaming beast (rhyme and pun intended), then you're best off memorizing all of this.  The dislikes as well, or else you'll likely end up with your banana split.  First of all, he likes:  small, adorable animals, big, fat, huggable ones, all the other types except for the ones that aren't so friendly, there's a certain like that he'd rather not disclose to anyone, and last, but not least, bananas.  He makes his own music through humming, singing, and tapping on random objects such as signs, poles, tree trunks, the ground, water, all that good stuff.  Oh, he also enjoys swimming, acrobatics, sunsets, sunrises, strawberry parfaits, fresh strawberries, strawberry ice cream, dango, fresh fruit smoothies, staves, drawing (just don't ask him to do anything realistic, you might lose your head in the process), and I that just about covers it.  Wait, wait, don't forget one of the most important ones: RAINBOWS!!  Yes.  Seriously.  Don't hate!  Not that he'd care.

Moving on to the things he doesn't like, I think you might want to take notes.  Trust me.  Here goes:  Pink (it's true), extremely cold weather, extremely hot weather, being tied down (both figuratively and literally), being lost, getting stuck in the rain, missing out on good food, banana splits (he thinks it's a hate crime against bananas, because they shouldn't be coupled with anything else), watermelon, sand between his toes, having to re-paint his nails (he wishes they would just stay painted forever), sticky stuff (especially when ice cream melts and gets all sticky), gummy worms, storms, lectures, and being called anything that has "monkey" in it.  That's a mouthful.

Nindō: “All life has value, but don’t think that means I won’t kill you if I have to.  I’ll do whatever it takes to survive.  That’s my way of the ninja!”

THE NINJA.

Origin: Fire Country
Affiliation: Konohagakure
Rank: C-Rank (Genin)
Specialties: Ninjutsu ; Taijutsu
Elemental Affinities:

  • Main: Katon(Fire)
  • Sub: Doton(Earth)
  • Additional: Yoton(Lava)

Combat Style:

In some ways, Kyou could be considered a merciless adversary.  Then again, he wouldn't kill unless it was absolutely necessary for him to stay alive.  When he fights, he usually focuses on staying alive if it's something serious.  Due to this, he finds that the flexibility he inherited from the Yonbi as well as his ability to perform acrobatic maneuvers with ease is extremely beneficial.  He uses this to his advantage by getting up close and personal, but remaining at a minuscule distance that's just large enough for him to be able to avoid getting hit.  Bob and weave, my friends, bob and weave.  Well, maybe not, this isn't boxing, but he does utilize a lot of evasive maneuvers in combat.  Sometimes, depending on the circumstances, he evades moves in a way that make it appear as though he's dancing.  Since close combat is what he chose to specialize in, he has learned that finding ways to close distances quickly may be of importance.  For this reason, he makes sure to remain as close to his opponents as possible to avoid the disadvantage he has when fighting from a distance.  When he's not being evasive, he prefers to use taijutsu, but combines taijutsu with ninjutsu to give his attacks a bit of flair.  His "Fiery Acrobatics" jutsu could be considered his signature move.

THE BACKGROUND.

History:

THE CHILD

Tanaka, Kyousuu.  That was the name that the child would be given, should it be a boy.  The parents never gave much thought to a name for a girl, as they'd already been blessed with a beautiful daughter.  Though they hadn't taken the chromosome factor into consideration, it wasn't as though they were completely opposed to having another daughter.  They just seemed to be hoping for a pattern: Boy, girl, boy, girl.  Four children was their cut-off, unless something happened to increase that number, of course.  With their oldest, it seemed that everything was perfect, as with their daughter, so they figured it was a no-brainer that they would have another 'perfect child' (to their standards) in this new offspring.  Unfortunately, their idea of perfect and the actual result of their labor didn't quite match up.

At first glance, it was just as they'd hoped.  Smooth, brown hair and calming green eyes, like the rest.  Their new baby boy would grow up to be healthy and strong.  As time passed, however, things took a turn away from what they'd hoped for.  Instead of playing in the dirt with sticks and rocks and getting dirty in the rain and the mud, the new addition to their family opted to stay inside and he clung to his older sister.  The two were near inseparable unless one of them had to make a trip to the bathroom for whatever reason, or when his sister had to go out.  It was generally accepted that he was simply going through a phase, and would grow up to be like his older brother: a strong, rugged shinobi who would serve the village proudly.  While he would become a shinobi, it wasn't quite in the way they had originally predicted.

Once he became a toddler, Kyousuu was expected to begin growing out of his so-called 'phase'.  His parents forced him to spend time with his brother, who was supposed to more or less force his old self out of him and bring about a new, "better" Kyousuu.  To make sure that the success rate was higher, his sister was sent to find temporary living quarters outside of their parents' home.  Despite these efforts, it was clear to both of Kyou's siblings that this wasn't going to work.  It simply wasn't right to try and change someone's nature.  As a result, Ken (Kyou's brother) decided to spend the time they spent without supervision giving him advice to help him later.  One of the most important things, he noted, was to make sure that Kyousuu knew not to let anyone try to change him.  Individuality was rare, and not necessarily praised by their parents, but it was a quality that would bring about some good in the village.  The young boy was too naive to really understand it back then, but he always gave his brother's advice a nod and a smile.

Soon enough, his parents realized that it wasn't going anywhere.  They were growing impatient, as it would be time for Kyousuu to enroll in the academy within the next year.  The one thing they didn't want was to send a child to the academy that would shame the Tanaka family, even though they didn't have anything special to their name but the pride of having served their village for years upon years.  Neither of them wanted to let this trend end with one "faulty" child.  He didn't behave or speak the way they wanted, so they had almost given up and written him off as a failure.  This was the only reason they hadn't given up yet - they had to keep the Tanaka name in high regard among those without any kekkei genkai.  As a result, they decided that they would have to resort to less gentle measures to get what they wanted out of this one.

THE BIJUU

For a while, there had been talk of a beast.  Not your typical, run-of-the-mill, out of line forest creature, but a true beat.  One of such colossal stature and power that it took many, many shinobi to even put up a good fight.  To some, it was simply known as the giant red ape that could bury villages under its lava.  Yet to those who knew something about the secrets it held knew as what it was - the great four-tailed beast, the Yonbi.  One of the nine tailed beasts, this creature was to be taken very seriously.  The Tanaka family knew that people were now capable of taking control of the tailed beasts by sealing them inside of a host.  These hosts, known as Jinchuuriki, would be capable of using the beast's powers.  Since they seemed to be running out of options, they decided to volunteer to assist in the capture and sealing of the Yonbi - inside their supposedly hopeless young son.

It's true that there were those children with better as well as worse lives at this point in time, but all Kyou knew was that his parents had finally stopped forcing him to do things he didn't want.  Since it was close to the time for him to enter the Academy, he was starting to feel excited.  He had his sister back, and both she and his brother were supportive of him.  To him, things seemed to be going quite well, which was what he needed to start his days at the academy without trouble.  It would generally be the same from then on, with just a bit of turbulence along the way, if Kyousuu had his way.  Unexpected events were likely to happen, but the only people that thought about these possibilities were those who sought to put them into action.  Nevertheless, that fateful day drew nearer, and he grew more anxious by the hour.

Parents, by nature, do what they believe is best for their children, even if it may not be in that child's interests.  These parents were no exception.  It was difficult to believe, but they genuinely thought about the future of their son, and how his behaviors may impede his growth once he got out into real situations.  Up until then, he'd rarely played with other children, but the only ones that saw a problem were his parents.  They had hoped that this next measure would guarantee a change for the better.  As they kept up with news about the Yonbi, the day drew closer when the Tanaka family would have its chance to shine.

Within a matter of days, the status went from, "Questionable, at best," to, "We've got it," giving the two Tanaka parents a glimmer of hope.  The beast would be theirs.  Konoha's skilled trackers had been able to locate it quickly, and with almost no casualties.  It had taken to hiding at the base of a mountain (as best as it could, given its monstrous size), where it spent its time enjoying the visits of random travelers, to put it politely.  Most of the time this would end in reports of either corpses or missing persons with whom communication was lost in the vicinity, but it wasn't until there was one lucky survivor that they were able to really get the information that they needed to continue with their plans to have the beast under their control.

It was time to get the team together that would complete this particular mission.  Many shinobi would be sent, and too many would not return.  Nonetheless, it was a risk that the village was willing to take to gain something that could possibly put it ahead of the game, so to speak.  As it was, it had been behind when it came to controlling Bijuu, so this was the perfect opportunity, and while the Yonbi wasn't necessarily the most powerful, its characteristics could still be put to good use.

Tanaka Hiro and Tanaka Miku, the parents of the boy who was now going to be treated as an object rather than a person, were both going to be present at the subduing and the sealing of the beast, as they had offered their child as its vessel.  They played the part very well, making it seem as though offering their child instead of themselves were a last resort.  Using excuses such as old age and a loss of physical strength, they managed to elude most suspicions that were originally placed on them.  With their children, they gathered their supplies and headed out to the rendezvous point.  They hadn't run into any interference for the most part, so it seemed things were going to go smoothly for them.

THE SEALING

As they approached the beast's current sanctuary, along with the entirety of the task force, it was apparent that things wouldn't be easy.  Though they knew this before, it never really hit them until they saw the damage that the creature could do.  Kyousuu's parents, however, refused to let it stop them from reaching their goal.  Their constant pushing caused the entire operation to be initiated ahead of schedule, and as a result some of the secrecy of their plan had been sacrificed.  Shinobi from smaller villages had gotten wind of what was happening, and they all wanted to steal the prize for themselves.

With the sound of the fighting, the Yonbi revealed itself far too soon, causing the unit to stretch its fighting force among the bijuu and the rival shinobi.  It wasn't long before Kyousuu's role as vessel was figured out, and he became a high-priority target.  Some of the most formidable fighters were sent to either capture or kill him, whichever produced the best result.  His older siblings couldn't stand the thought of their younger brother being either kidnapped OR killed, and abandoned their previous positions to keep him safe.  They took him to a forest of rocks near the base of the mountain that would prevent him from being easily found, and fought off anyone that came near them that shouldn't have.  Though they suffered heavy injuries, this gave the rest of the unit enough time to finish the preparations for sealing as their numbers were slowly dwindling.  Lava had begun to surround them due to the bijuu, and though small in numbers, the lesser-known villages were pushing them to their breaking point.

With the help of a few ninja from the Uzumaki clan, the beast had been temporarily immobilized, and the sealing would begin.  Kyou's siblings moved him directly under the monstrous creature, and the poor boy fell out of the immense feelings of fear that took over him.  The massive bijuu towered over him, red fur and menacing eyes taking up his entire field of vision.  It looked down at him with a gaze that paralyzed him and sent chills down his spine.  Never had he experienced a sensation such as this, and Kyou wasn't so sure he would survive to go through it again. At that moment, he simply wished to disappear.  Nothing around him mattered, and it had all been tuned out.  He was afraid for his life, despite all of the reassuring words that had been said to him.  He had been told that everything would be fine, and after it was over with, everything would start to get better, which was something that he had looked forward to completely.  Sitting there, he felt as though he had been lied to by everybody, despite the chains holding the beast down.

As if the terror wasn't enough, the sealing began.  In order to expedite the process, multiple fuuinjutsu specialists would work together to complete this daunting task.  As a result, there was an increased strain on those keeping the sealing area clear of any interference.  Things were being pushed heavily, and if they didn't complete this in enough time, everything would be lost.  Not even their survival was guaranteed.  In this conflict, time was something that they simply didn't have.

The moment the seal began to appear on the boy, it seemed as though time had stopped.  Pain and fear were etched onto his face, and he opened his mouth to scream.  Not a sound escaped, and everything began to spin.  This sensation was even worse than the previous one, and not due to physical pain.  He could feel the chakra being sucked into him, and it was unpleasant in every way possible.  It was too much for the young boy, and he blacked out.  Suddenly, there was a breach in the defensive barrier, and a kunai flew threw the air, aimed directly at Kyousuu.  If it wasn't for his sister intercepting the projectile, it would have went right into his throat.  Unfortunately, she stepped in last minute, the object now lodged in her left arm.  The process was repeated, until a fuuma shuriken sliced through the air - and her legs.  Her body hit the ground, and it was too late for her.  The medical ninja were all preoccupied with others that had needed attention if they hadn't been killed.  Unfortunately, Kyou wouldn't learn of this until later, when he asked what happened to his sister.  It was her quick intervention that bought the sealing team enough time to complete the seal, and the Yonbi was then trapped inside of the young boy.

THE JINCHUURIKI - ACADEMY ARC

After the 'incident', as it came to be called by Kyousuu alone, things didn't really get better.  He learned that his sister had died protecting him, but the details were still kept from him.  Nobody saw his brother die, but there was no body to be found, either.  In essence, his older brother was MIA.  As a result, he began to behave bitterly toward most adults, as he blamed all of them for what happened.  They were all reminders of the sacrifices that were made just to put a monster inside of him that he couldn't even control.  It seemed to have effects on him physically, but he didn't care that this made his parents happier.

His days at the academy were filled with basic lessons, which were things that he had mostly been taught by members of his family already.  Most of his fellow students paid him no mind, but they didn't exactly ignore him.  At least bullying wasn't an issue for him at that point, because none of the parents forced any sort of boundaries on their children.  They would openly express their dislike for the Tanaka child if they knew the truth, but those that didn't know generally didn't need to.  If anyone did happen to make some sort of remark that rubbed him the wrong way, he would give a verbal protest.  His parents would just tell him that it was for the best, and he grew distant from them.  Their conversations were limited to yes, no, maybe, and only the most vital pieces of information.

Most of his time began to shift from being spent training openly to going into forest areas to work on his skills.  This was when he noticed that most animals didn't harbor any dislike for him based on what he looked like or even what he was.  Some of them were easily frightened, others were aggressive, and some would just plain ignore his presence, but none of them acted that way because of him, and it made him wonder why things ended up the way they did.  It wasn't his direct choice to do what he was more or less forced to do, but he was paying the price for it.  He had to carry the burden.  It made less sense to him than a water-locked cat, but that was just how he saw it.  These outings distracted him, and he often skipped class just to lay among the trees, usually on stronger branches, so that he was mostly hidden in the foliage.  As a result, though he was admitted to the Academy around the same time, it took him longer to reach the level of Genin.  It wasn't due to a lack of skill as it was a lack of discipline, which he would still need to improve on before even getting close to being a decent member of a team.

If there was one thing he gained from everything that happened in his past, it was his nindō.  He would do whatever he could to survive.  Why?  His sister had valued his life above hers, and he would be disrespecting her memory if he allowed himself to feel as though his life had no value.  Above all, he would have to protect what his siblings protected until the very end - his life.
