Back in the beginning of Konohagakure not Sato, when it was founded by both the Uchiha and Senju clan, the Kiyo clan was a very small clan situated at the edge of the village. They were very patriotic people, and wanted to help the village in any way they could. After looking at the Uchiha clan, ancestors of the Kiyo decided not to dabble in becoming a ninja, and focus their efforst elsewhere, due to the constant fighting occuring in the Uchiha clan. Knowing that Konohagakure had a stable military force, the Kiyo clan worked hard to better the village's economy. They did this by fishing. Fish were very popular in the Fire Country and people were willing to pay a good price for it. The Kiyo clan were one of the first people to find out how to fish successfully with rods rather than nets, allowing them to catch a better quantity and quality of fish. Due to this, the Kiyo clan became proud of their knowledge and abilities in fishing. Once the Kiyo clan had achieved their goal of stabalising Konoha's economy, they decided to maintain it, rather than strive for something else.

"It would be foolish to allow ours minds to wander from what we already know, and are certain of." Akera Kiyo, the found of the Kiyo clan had said, upon discussing moving into other areas of economic businesses. The Kiyo were humble and respectful people, so they obeyed his word. Wanting nothing more than to live a healthy, happy lifestyle, they kept to themselves in the edge of the housing district, yet were friendly to neighbours and such. The women of the clan, however, became unhappy with their lifestyles. They found fishing did not interest them at all. Males could not understand this, as they thought fishing was a very enjoyable hobby- and it was what the clan specialised in. But Akera was understanding, and suggested that his wife, Keira Kiyo, should lead the women in to more skills they could learn, and pass down through the generations. And so it began. Every day at 5 o' clock, Keira Kiyo sat all the females down in a room, and taught them several skills to help them in their later life, and pass on to their daughters. These skills generally revolved around creativity and nature. She taught the women to sew, how to successfully help plants and tress grow for their gardens, pottery, painting and many other skills.

It was a great success, as all of these skills were for personal gain, so the Kiyo clan kept their reputation of a fishermen clan, but the women were greatly skilled in artistic areas. However, the Kiyo clan have only just got over their reluctance to dabble in ninja abilites. They have however, got a ninja in the clan: Akimaru Kiyo. This young boy is the first Kiyo within 100 years to become a ninja and serve his village in such a way. His mother was also a medical ninja for a short period of time, yet she had not married his father at the time, so was not officially considered a Kiyo. It is believed that is where Akimaru got his desire to become a ninja from, as his mother often took him around the Konoha hospital with him. It was predicted in the beginning by Akera Kiyo, that one day, those would begin to break the mould and do what they wanted. "When that day comes, we should not deny them of what the want." was all he had said on the matter. It is now believed that the Kiyo clan are more lenient towards allow ninja of their members, and there will be more to come.
