You forget that he now has the Rinnegan, Hashirama's cells and stole Hashirama's Sage mode, so yeah, he came a long way since those days.

Both make a fair amount of sense, though there is one thing I still wonder about. How the hell did the Old Monkey Geezer get all five basic elemental natures, yet used only fire and earth vs Orochimaru. Hell, the Hiruzen we see now could have seriously killed people with that shit.
