Karamu was feeling confident, he had passed the first test and his hopes were high for the rest of the exam, he felt he was ready to become chuunin. He had been told of the second test and what it consisted of albeit simply, it was basically cross the river using three stepping stones. He noticed water walking was not allowed, he figured as much, he knew things were going to be difficult, chuunin were not made by their ability to simply cross a river, there was bound to be something else to cause trouble. He got ready, or as ready as he could be for facing the unknown, and headed out to the river.

He arrived at the river at the time stated and looked at the stones ahead of him, there were nine in total and nothing seemed wrong with them, the traps were well hidden, perhaps by use of fuuinjutsu, he did not know but neither was it particularly important. Everything was strangely peaceful, that was bound to change soon enough as a ninjas life had the habit of never being peaceful. Karamu thought that he should test a stone before using it but then he felt that was the wrong thing to do, he wanted to thrust himself into the unknown to test himself, what would be the point if he knew what to expect? He carefully eyed the first three stones he could take a step onto, knowing each stone may cause him harm. After careful deliberation, more like randomly choosing, he decided upon the stone to the left (OOC: Stone 3). He took a moment to calm himself and then jumped from the side of the river and landed on the stone, unaware of what was about to happen.

Isamu stood with his arms folded, his biceps bulging as he did so. He watched as the Genin he was procturing stood at the edge of the river between them, the water crystal clear. The Genin was clearly deliberating which stone to take. "At least he's not rushing in to it." Isamu thought to himself, but he kept his mouth in a tight line as to not give anything away. He knew his facial expressions could easily give the Genin tips on what to do. Not that keeping his expressions a secret was a task for Isamu. He often did it without even meaning to, so that part of procturing this particular exam didn't require any concious effort on his part. The only noise was the gushing of the river as the water splashed against the nine stepping stones.

Isamu's eyes were glued to the Genin as his foot hovered over the water, then his whole body jumped on to the stone to the Genin's left. The Genin landed on the stone with consdierable force, as he jumped onto the stone rather than stepping onto it lightly with one foot first to test the effect of the stone. Isamu's eyes narrowed marginally as he knew this was the Genin's first mistake. The force he had put into his jump would only aid the stone's power of sticking the Genin to the stone with an incredible force which no Genin would be able to struggle against physically... It was visible, the stone sticking the Genin's feet to it's rocky surface, but what the Genin was going to do to combat this, Isamu had no idea...

Karamu landed a little too hard on the stone but it was not that bad, or so he thought. He then noticed that something felt strange, he tried to move his feet to jump to the next stone but he then realised he was stuck to the stone. He tried lifting his feet but he was really stuck, this was not a trap he would of thought to expect which meant it was a good suprise trap. He then had an idea, he punched the stone with chakra in his fist hoping it would break as he knew he could break some rocks with his punches, unfortuantely this was no such stone. His right hand ended up stuck to the stone, which was now slightly cracked, and he crouched as bending over would be bad for his back. He cursed under his breath at his stupidity and tried to think of something less stupid.

He could not think of anything and small panic was setting in, he was worried that this was it and he was not going to pass the chuunin exams. He looked at his situation and cursed again while looking around for something, anything to help him out of this predicament. Nothing was coming to him and he began to sweat as he was now getting quite worried. He did not want to quit, it was the last thing he wanted to do as becoming a better ninja was important to him. He then figured the only idea he had left was what he was going with, it would injure him definately but he had no other choice, he pulled out an explosive tag and put it on the stone. He then made a hand sign with his left hand pressed againt the right hand which was still stuck down and the explosion went off, the stone broke under the force and Karamu fell into the water, his legs were in pain as were his hands and torso which were burnt slightly, his head was ringing and he fell into the river. He then brought himself back into focus, focusing on moving towards his goal, his head rose over the river and he swam to the next stone which was in the middle of the middle row (OOC: Stone 5) and climbed on, wishing that nothing bad would happen, knowing that was unlikely.

It became apparent immediately when the Genin was stuck on the stone. The realisation was clear on his face, his eyes wide in a mixture of emotions; shock, fear, worry. But underneath it all, his determination still glittered deep in his eyes. The Genin spent less time than Isamu expected worrying, and acted quickly, yet tentatively when he did act. He concentrated chakrain his right fist and slammed it down into the stone. As expected, it didn't work. It barely even made a crack. But now, the Genin's fist was stuck to the rock as well, his back arched. Isamu watched as he stooped into a crouch, a more comfortable position, at least. He rummaged in his ninja pouch for a second time and Isamu began to wonder what he would pull out. "He seems to rely on weaponry a lot..." Isamu thought to himself, making a note on his checkboard, which had the Genin's score on it. Isamu wanted to be as accurate and as fair as possible with this test.

After a moment, the Genin pulled an explosive tag from his pouch, and placed it firmly on the stone, flattening it out. This desperate tactic shocked even Isamu, as he didn't expect the Genin to make such a jump so soon in the test, he hadn't even thought about what to do yet! Although his brain was on alert an panicking for the Genin's safety, his body tensed and ready to spring to save him from the explosion he was about to create, Isamu did not give anything away. He wouldn't want the Genin to be purposely hurt, but it was against the proctor rules to intervene at this point. The Genin formed the handseal with his free hand and in the moment his hand glowed blue slightly from the concentration of chakra, he disappeared completely behind the explosion and smoke which erupted from the stone.

Surprising even Isamu, the stone broke into pieces, the explosion settled and Isamu saw the Genin in the water. The Genin looked in pain, but still he paddled on towards the next stone, placing his hands on it and pulling himself up. Finally, in the moments before the stone activated, Isamu got a good look at the Genin, his clothes scorched and his body slightly burnt. Keeping his face expressionless, Isamu knew that within the next few seconds, the stone the Genin was stood on would shoot up flames at him. After being burnt, Isamu reckoned the Genin wouldn't want to be burnt again, lest his skin fall off. Whether his reactions had been slowed due to shock, Isamu didn't know. But whether he would have the courage to move on, Isamu didn't know...

Karamu pulled himself up with little difficulty, he was hurt but he was tough enough to keep moving. He stood up and took the briefest moment to look at himself, he had been burnt up his body which shocked him a little at the sight of burns but this had happened to him once or twice before so he was not too shocked and knew it was not too bad. His clothes had holes in them but it was fine, a ninja was not so vain. He was surprised when nothing happened at first, he did not let himself fall into a false sense of security as that would be too dangerous. He then felt something wrong, the stone beneath him got very hot and then flames flew up and surrounded his body in flames.

He thought he was the unluckiest guy around, it was as if the world hated him having skin. He was in a lot of pain by then but he knew he had to get out quick, he jumped into the water and felt a large shock to his body as the flames were doused and he was struggling to see in the water and knew he had to raise his head above the water. He rose to the surface and took a big gasp of air, things were not going well, he looked at his skin and this time he was truly shocked, his skin was severely burnt all over as far as he could see, his clothes were full of holes and he was in pain all over, the exams were tougher than he had expected, whoever created this test was an evil genius.

He slowly swam to the next stone (OOC: Stone 8 ) and struggled to climb on but did, he did not stand up, he was on his hands and knees and breathing heavily, his body was hurting all over but he did not want to say he quit as he really did not and he wanted to become a chuunin. He knew he was in a lot of danger as he was unlikely going to dodge the next trap as he had failed to dodge either of the other two but at least he had made it to the last stone. He was determined to pass the test, he believed he was getting to the other side of the river regardless of his condition.

The Genin stood still for a few moments on the stone, having a quick look over his body, to make sure he was okay to continue the exam. Participants could quit the exam at any time, if they wished. Isamu felt a twinge of guilt as he knew the Genin was in pain from the burns and that they were about to get worse if he didn't move. But of course, he didn't say anything. He couldn't. He kept his mouth shut tight, in an expressionless line. Once the fire shot up out of the flames, engulfing the Genin, Isamu prepared to get over there and save him. He heard no screams of pain, or panic, but the Genin remained calm and jumped into the water of the river. His body must have been so hot, because steam rose from where he dived, the water rippling from the impact. Isamu felt incredibly bad for this Genin. "Surely he's going to give up now...?"

But Isamu had obviously expected too much from the child. He fought his way through the incredible pain and swam ever so slowly to the next stone. The weak ripples seemed to be pushing him closer towards it faster than his body was. The Genin placed his hands on the stone and attempted to pull himself up. His body flopped and he dropped back into the water, but he did not give up. He eventually did pull himself back up, but he didn't stand. He was on his hands and knees, panting heavily. This was the image of a Genin, defiled. This young boy proved how hard the exam was and how many it had claimed. But still, he was fighting. It wasn't over yet.

From the front of the stone a horrific monster appeared, roaring loudly enough to place small cracks in the stones, and Isamu himself had to sturdy his feet to the ground. He hoped the roar wouldn't knock the weakened Genin back off the stone. He seemed like he'd had enough bad luck for one day. As the monster roared, it moved closer to the stone, it's jaw wide, closing in on the stone, and the Genin, if he was still on there. It was hard to see through all the unnatural reddish chakra the monster was radiating. It's jaw was wide, as if it was about to swallow the stone and Genin, whole. But the monster was blocking the path to the end of the river. How would the Genin make it?

Karamu was in pain but he knew he could push himself further, he struggled onto his knees and stood up but he then saw it, the biggest obstacle yet. A monster had appeared, it was oozing in red chakra and it looked more ferocious than any creature he had ever seen before, Karamu was struggling to see how any genin could pass these tests or he had just had a bad pick of stones and there may of been an easy route. The creature launched itself towards Karamu and it's mouth was open wide, it was trying to eat him whole! Karamu felt great dread running up his spine but he was not going to give up, he took a deep breath and mustered all the strength he had left in his body, he had not used much chakra so he figured he would use as much as he had now. He brought chakra to his hands and feet, his control was not too good as he was in pain and could not concentrate with the monster incoming. He leapt towards the monster and punched it with both his hands rapidly but it had little effect upon the monster, it hit him, he was not swallowed but was taken beneath the river with a tremendous crash that sent water and stone fragments flying in all directions.

Karamu opened his eyes, he was still beneath the water, he had momentarily passed out from the pain but he brought himself out of it. He felt a great pain at his left and looked in horror as he saw that his entire left arm was missing, he was in so much pain and his arm was gone, this was too much, he cried out in pain and then struggled to hold any breath he had left. He noticed the monster was in pain, it had a stone sticking in it's eye and there was blood coming from it, he knew he had a moment to get out out of the river. He swam up with the last of his strength, he knew it would take a long time to recover but he needed to pass this and nothing was going to stop him after he had came this far, he even surprised himself with his endurance. He raised his hand above the river and grabbed onto the river side, he raised his head above the river and rested his head on the river side. With a missing left arm, severe burns, what he would later learn were 3 broken ribs and various other lesser injuries, he had touched the other side of the river. He said "I...did.....it." and fell unconcious with half his body still in the river, he had a smile on his face but there were tears falling from his closed eyelids, he had been thrown against so much and just managed to make it across the river but he may of sacrificed too much. He had fell unconcious and had forgotten about the monster but it was out of his hands now as his body had no strength left, it was up to his proctor to rescue him.

Just as Isamu had feared, the Genin was taken in by the illusion of the monster. Caught in the Genjutsu, the Genin fell to his side and was lying limply on the stone, trapped. Isamu thought about rescuing the Genin at this point, but he let the Genjutsu run it's course, to see if the Genin thought to escape it, or beat it within itself. Isamu only wished he could see what was going on inside the Genjutsu. Minutes passed, as what Isamu was sure was a raging battle roared on inside the Genin's young mind. He was already physically drained, but being drained of his mental energy would seem just too much, surely? Was Isamu putting too much hope in this young Genin? He hoped not, but he wasn't sure of himself at all. The Genin's expressionless face twitched, his body limp on the stone, which was sure to ache once he snapped out of the illusion. It was hard to tell from his facial expressions, but it seemed the Genin was doing no better in the illusion than he was in the real world with the previous two stones. Isamu felt a pang of guilt, and knew it was finally time for him to intervene. There was no more hope. There is a time when it is better to be cruel to be kind. Dropping his pen and board to the groud, Isamu de-activated the seals on all the stones, and leapt across the river and onto the stone the Genin was lying on. Even though the seal and the Genjutsu were de-activated, the Genin remained unconcious, proving just how drained he actually was. Isamu picked the Genin up in his arms, his body drooping. Isamu looked down at the boy in his arms and saw tears leaking from his eyelids. Isamu wasn't an emotional man, but this teared even him up. Of course, he managed to suppress the emotion as he lightly jumped and landed back on the bank of the river. "I...did....it...." Isamu heard the Genin whisper despite his unconciousness. This gave Isamu the hope that, perhaps things hadn't all gone wrong inside the illusion. "I guess the kid has more fight than you can count on."
