| (After I get this story ironed out, I'm gonna post up the different animals covered by my summon, so I can draw on them in the future. After this is done, I'll consolidate the one approved summon into it, and have this one topic to get all my summon info out of. Forgive the long story, but I felt like typin. Dinosaurs are neat.)
Jutsu had never come naturally to Saya. Really no one in her family was known for their skill with such delicate things as forming elemental techniques. In the countless times through out her life that others had tried to instill in her the basic functionality of ninjutsu, and all the more specialized techniques that spun off from it’s creation, Saya had flatly failed. In her two years through the Ninja Academy she had managed to learn only two jutsu, and even those came with a huge amount of practice. It was only shortly her graduation that she also picked up the summoning jutsu, and completely by accident.
Even if she could not perform techniques, she still tried. All her teachers ever told her to do, Saya did her best to accomplish. Jutsu after jutsu were cast away in time, and everyone expected it would go much the same way with this day’s lessons. The instructor guided the class carefully, explaining the hand seals and type of chakra control needed. He explained the theory behind the jutsu, and how the chakra was used to open an instant gate between the worlds. He was explaining the importance of the summoning contract when Saya first attempted the jutsu, and promptly vanished.
After her first use of the jutsu, Saya found herself standing on firm, if rather hot, ground. Surrounding her was a vast blackened plain, the ashen ground run through with continuous narrow cracks and crevices. The glow from the heat below the ground was impressive, stifling even, and heated the lungs used to breath it in. The wasteland held few landmarks, only the craglike peaks of the mountains to the north and west of her. To her east and south lay open landscape, and a flat horizon. With only the mountains as an alternative, Saya marched her way southwards. Behind her the mountains continued to bellow great billows of smoke into the sky, creating a rather early sunset for the vast plain that night was quick to cast its shadow over.
By night her path was lit by the subtle glow of the molten rocks several feet beneath the surface of the ground. The road map of narrow cracks let the incandescent liquid below cast it’s light upwards and light her path with a fiery red. The thick hardened soles of her plated boots protected her well from the searing temperatures beneath her, however she was dreadfully light on her feet. Having been transported away from her classroom, she was mostly unarmed. She had her katana, removing it from her person required physical work on the part of anyone attempting to do so. Beyond the effort of lifting the thing, prying it from her angry, and violent hands is a much worse matter. It was for reasons such like this a warrior never let their sword out of reach. Any innocent afternoon can turn into a great ordeal, and no ordeal should be suffered unarmed.
Well into the night Saya marched through the volcanic landscape, heading in a single direction with steadfast determination and drive. Her pace remained steady, if somewhat quick, the standard of her military breeding, though the sulfurous smells and searing heat distracted her from her task. The first one landed squarely on her back, it’s claws clamping down into her shoulders and pressing her down into the searing hot ground beneath her. Easily it could have had a cooked meal for itself, and it’s friends, if this were anyone else. Of course, few others could have made it this far in such a hellish wasteland.
The lengthy march had lasted for more miles than even Saya would have guessed, and behind her the mountains were almost a spec on the horizon. The glow of the ground had gotten dimmer over time and what looked like cool, solid earth seemed to be only a mile or so off. The ordeal was close to its end, and she was showing signs of physical wear, and exhaustion as she walked. She seemed like the perfect victim, but it’s rare an Ashigaru soldier is an easy take down. Had it run her through with a sword, or shot her with an arrow, it may have had more success, however perching itself atop her shoulders was it’s first grave mistake.
Before her mind even had time to catch up, her hand moved for her ancient sword. The flawless blade was pulled from it’s functional and plain black scabbard in an instant, and drawn upwards with the same motion. Her knees caught herself, bracing against the sudden 400 pounds sitting atop of her, and only its lack of balance saved it from being cut through with her sword. Saya is not slow to continue her attack, turning on her attackers with great fury and anger. How Dare They attack her like that. She twists her body down and jumps back, the beast’s large claws tearing through her flesh as she flings it off balance and away from her. She draws her arms up, in spite of the obvious injury, and cuts downwards without a pause, biting the steel deep into the feathered beast.
Before life had fully left the dinosaur she’d begun to back away slowly, and pulled the katana free of the first victim's corpse. There were six more of the monsters following her, and it was the first time she got a good look at them. They looked like the birds of hell must, with vicious talons and a hundred dagger-like teeth. They were only three feet high at their shoulders, but were long and lithe, with the heads and tails of lizards. They stared at her with beady red eyes, and hissed threats at her. Her blood was already forming small trails down her back, and the monsters were hungry for more. She surveyed her situation, and formed a plan in record setting time, deciding on the best course of action.
She uses the only catch phrase her family has ever been known for, gathering up a good lung full of air before exclaiming, “RAAAAAAAAH!“ in a very loud and bold voice. She waves her blood stained katana over her head for just a moment, then lunges forward towards her pursuers. This, of course, throws great confusion into the ranks of the hunters, unused to such determined and fearless prey. The silvered blade of her katana is stained again with their blood, as she cuts down another of the monsters with little time or trouble. Her movements are fast, precise, and completely lacking in the exhaustion she’d begun to show in the longer hours of her march. No, Saya was fresh and ready. The gleam in her eyes was one of bloodlust, and battle!
Even with five of them left, the small hunters were quick to determine the risk verses the reward in the matter. The remaining creatures ran away from her, and turned out to be remarkably fast. Saya gnashed her teeth together as her opponents deftly departed in all directions, denying her the chance to slaughter the rest of them for their short sighted assault. They intended to eat her, but she might need to eat them. She was without food in this landscape, after all. After fleeing for a ways, the cunning monsters paused and turned to watch her reaction. Confident, and rather eager to kill, Saya charged after them, but again they’d flee. Faster than she runs, they scuttle across the landscape and evade. Three times they managed to draw her further away from the grasslands she was approaching, and getting her to spend just that much more time over the baking hot soil of the wasteland. Saya caught on to their plan quickly enough, and abandoned her plans for vengeance. She’d have to have it later, she figured, and went back to her marching.
Saya kept an ever present ear for those creatures that were following her, still ignoring the pain inflicted by the piercing claws of the small dinosaurs that had attacked her. The wound was thankfully clean, however not clean enough. Her wound had closed as well as nature typically allowed, and though blood loss was a threat, it seemed to her less obvious than the carnivores who might enjoy her blood for more than its intended purpose. She quickened her haste, and made tracks towards the grasslands on the horizon.
It was another mile, and two more attacks from the small, and now more cautious, raptors hunting her. She managed to cut one quite well on their last attack, but they still never stopped following her. She was watching them when they finally did, and though they had shown cunning and will to kill, they had shown her no fear at all. This time, however, as she turned around to face them, they all became suddenly alarmed. All of the beasts were squawking their little heads off and hopping around in a great commotion. After only a second of panicked chattering, the five monsters turned tail, and promptly fled the scene.
Saya was somewhat perplexed by this, but the reasoning was quickly obvious. Like birds departing in the forest, there was usually a good reason for it. Saya’s hand moves to her katana once more as she quickly spins around, another monster just moments from making her its next meal.
The beast was a massive cat of some sort, easily 5 feet tall and 10 feet long. It had a large head and huge mouth. Besides the claws it no doubt possessed, in it’s mouth was a pair of huge, curved fangs, each one easily 15 inches long. The saber-toothed cat snarled as it realized it had been spotted, and pounced on her. Saya was forced down to her back on the ground, the massive beast atop her and crushing her small frame out of view. When the dust finally settled surely anyone who’d seen the attack would have chalked one up for the tiger, however luck was on Saya’s side that night.
With only enough time to draw her sword from its scabbard, the large cat had managed to slay itself. The massive weight of the creature pressing against the razor sharp, finely honed, steel point of her blade easily sent the metal cutting deep through its own flesh. It landed on Saya’s sword, and its own crushing weight drove the blade through its heart, killing it in an instant. Even with such a lucky victory, just getting the massive beast off of her was a mission all on its own. The cat easily weighed a thousand pounds, and more than one bone had been broken in the process of it slaying itself.
It took her an hour just to cut her sword free, sawing through tendon and sinew and bone. By hacking back and forth she managed to free her blade from its prison inside the tiger’s chest, and she managed to cut a sizeable chunk out of the saber tooth’s side as she did so. She was covered completely in the saber tooth’s blood when she finally managed to squeeze and wiggle her way out from underneath the massive bodyof the thing. When she finally did, even that victory of fortune seemed horribly short lived.
Blade still in hand she turned to see the five monster’s who’d been following her. They were all sitting off to the side of the battle, no doubt watching the whole time as Saya struggled to free herself. Behind the five of them, stood what seemed to be their father. The dinosaur was much larger, and had softer colors. Light blues and a soft green colored in the much nicer feathers of the larger dinosaur. Its vicious claws and hundred razor sharp teeth still bore the same resemblance to the smaller ones it had come to aid. Truly, even Saya felt a little despair in her heart. Of course, she wasn’t afraid to die. No, death was the greatest moment of any soldier’s life, she had just hoped to fight a little more before she did die.
Saya manages a bit of a snide smirk as she looks at the clearly lethal hunter. Already pushed so far, victory didn’t seem likely without another fortunate event. “This is a nice place you’ve got here.” Saya says to the creatures, calmly but with more emotion than is typical. A hint of irony and humor slip into her voice, evidenced by the short laugh that followed her first words. She lifts her sword slowly and grips it with both hands. She readies herself to charge after speaking the last few words. "My family would love it."

| “Stay your blade, human.” Came a soft and slightly raspy voice, the simple act alone enough to send Saya off balanace. Perhaps these were demons after all, for animals could certainly not talk. It took her a moment to believe that she’d heard the words herself, but the smaller ones were talking, too. “She did it. She killed that cat.” They marvel to themselves, clearly impressed by Saya’s great.. luck. They hadn’t noticed the hours of walking on fire, nor her ease in dispatching two of the smaller dinosaurs, they see only her lucky strike? Saya had no pride in her defeat of the cat, as it was a fluke. By all rights she should be dead, but favor smiled upon her. Fortune is, however, hardly worth bragging about. The larger dinosaur continued, shaking once to ruffle it’s teal plumage and speaking over the smaller ones who continued to whisper to each other. “It is no small feat to kill that tiger. Even those smaller ones give me trouble, some times. Why don’t you put your weapon away and make yourself comfortable? You’re not the prey I intend on hunting today.”
Saya considered her options for a moment, and gradually lowered her blade. In a slow and graceful motion she centered the blade’s tip in her scabbard, and slid the length of perfectly forged steel back into place. With the fight seemingly over, Saya finally collapsed. The broken bone in left leg had barely supported her before, but now it refused to do so any longer. Saya grits her teeth together as she lands where she’d been standing rather gracelessly. Suprisingly, Saya is immune to such pain, and regards her broken limb as a dire inconvenience. “Oh how fortunate.” Saya says, her eyes narrowing just slightly and focusing on the dinosaur. Being saved by fortune is a bitter defeat on its own. “I do not know how it is that you talk, but I recommend you flee before I get myself back upon my feet. I have no need of your mercy.”
“My mercy?” the monster laughs, better exposing its countless sharp teeth. “We don’t have mercy. You are strong, and have a strong will. You killed a sabertooth in single combat.. and the demonbirds hate the sabretoothes. You may be one of the luckiest humans I’ve ever seen around here. Of course, you’re also the only human I have ever seen around here.” It said slowly, while carefully watching her reactions. It could tell she was dangerous, and still didn’t approach too close to her. “You’re going have to come with me to my brood..”
“I am no fool, to be brought to some carnivore’s den.” Came her reply, calm and steady as ever. Indeed the option didn’t add up. Certainly there would only be more of them there. As she surveyed her options, she knew that a fight here would also be her undoing, low on chakra as she was. The dinosaurs could see her fading will in her eyes as she began to understand her only choice. As calmly as before she continues, betraying no emotion in her words. “Besides, my leg is broken. I am not in a position to be traveling.”
The dinosaur slowly creeps closer, taking two small strides and clearing some ten feet with them. It crouches low to the ground, hissing softly as it does. Saya’s eyes narrow, defensive instincts bubbling to the surface but not coming to effect. “Fear not, human, I will carry you. Get yourself upon my back, and I will bring you swiftly to the nest we call home. There you will get some help for your injury.” Said the dinosaur quietly, approaching finally within reach. Crouched down as the dinosaur was, Saya needed only pull herself up a couple feet.
This was accomplished easily enough, a handful of feathers pulled out as saya dragged her slight weight up onto the back of the beast. In spite of the soft feathers covering it, the scaled hide beneath was hardly comfortable. It was thick and scaley, tough hide as one would expect from a lizard. “Good now.. “ said the dinosaur as it stood back up to it’s full height. Saya was lifted easily five feet above the ground, and quickly grabbed ahold of some feathers. “Off we go.”
The last words had left the dinosaurs snout only a fraction of a second before it took off, reaching its full speed in all of two seconds. From standing still to amazingly fast, saya hung on for dear life. Riding a horse had never been like this! For a moment all she can see is the grass below flying by faster than she’d ever seen it moving, then she finally pulls herself up fully on its back. Chakra rushes to her hands and legs, gripping the animal tighter to assure she will not go flying off. On two legs the blue-green demon bird almost flies. It bounces forward covering countless yards with each stride and kicking up small divots behind it. Saya looks back, the four surviving raptors in a single file line behind the leader, and sprinting just as quickly.
The vast open grasslands was an ideal hunting grounds for the Onitori, the demon birds that had lived here for generations beyond their remembering. “My name is Saya!” Saya shouts to be heard over the sound of rushing wind. The dinosaur was jogging at 40 miles an hour, and seemed to be doing so rather easily. Once she had made herself comfortable the ride was not so bad. They were moving along at an incredible clip, but the mountains still seemed to be visible on the horizon. Open grassland surrounded them, and her high vantage point let her see over it all.
“Kusamaru!” the creature shouted back, the name denoting something of a grassy nature. With little warning the bird crouched low and sprung forward, lifting high off the ground. It cleared almost 30 meters in one leap, soaring in a low arc through the air before landing again. It continued on in its run with no hesitation at all, though now the smaller dinosaurs were doubling their efforts to catch up with the larger one. “It’s an amazing thing you did. How did you get to this place, Saya? Humans are very uncommon.”
Saya can’t help but smirk to herself as she hears such manners from the predator, its cunning and intelligence clear in its concise communications. “It was a mistake. I was only practicing the motions for a new technique my instructor was attempting to teach me.” She says slowly, leaving it at that. Her voice still remains as calm and steady as it had in the preceding fight. As she rides atop the dinosaur her blood is still flowing. The constant ache from her broken leg has been wearing on her, and in spite of her calm outside, Saya has been fading quickly. Pain and fatigue may be something she can resist, but blood loss is something completely different. Her voice trails off slowly as she speaks, her mind registering the slow hazing of her eyes. The world of green grass and blue sky quickly fades to black as her mind swims into unconsciousness.
Perhaps the lack of jutsu is a blessing if this is the result of mastering a jutsu. It took her so little effort to perform the summoning jutsu, but it hadn’t worked at all. Instead, she herself was summoned. The events didn’t quite make sense in her mind, her subconscious trying to make sense of why she’d be brought here, if anywhere. Visions of the dinosaurs kept fluttering through her dreams, and she could begin to hear their voices. Before the darkness of her eyes faded and any light at all was seen, she could hear the multitude of voices.
“Kill her, and eat her.” “Just feed her to the young.” “Just kill her before she becomes trouble.” “Grr, just let me do it..”
The last voice was dark and raspy, and led to the first physical sensations being felt by her body once more. Her head started to spin as light focused in through her slowly opening eyes, the great pressure on her head slowly becoming more obvious. Beneath her she was lying in mud, but she was still helpless to move herself. Nothing she tired worked, her entire body still mostly unconscious. A three toed foot pushed down on her head, sinking her down into the mud further.
Saya coughs as she inhales the first breath she can remember taking since the voices started, and her body begins to burn. The pain began to fade away as slowly as it crept upon her, kept at bey only by her clan’s natural resistance. Her fingers wiggle slightly, then her toes. Her jaw works as pain, and then movement creeps back into each part of her body. Before she can move to defend herself, someone else does. As she begins to flail in the mud, she finds herself thrust onto a new level of dirtiness. From covered in blood, to covered in mud, Saya languishes the open wounds covering a good portion of her body.
"Hush, old man, you know we can’t do that. She was brought here for a reason.” Comes just another unfamiliar voice. All of them were low and raspy. They held their Sssss’s for too long, and seemed far to serpentine. Kusamaru’s voice had been there somewhere, though she couldn’t hear it now. Her eyes still refused to focus, and it took her almost all of her remaining energy just to sit up. As she does, the voices all go quiet. The one that had spoken last comments again, “And she’s already sitting up... Kusamaru..”
A great rush of wind is next and enough swirling movement to knock her out once more. The gathering was apparently over, and to many bodies to count dashes past her as they made their exits in unison. Still low on blood, the rush of activity is enough to floor Saya once more, and usher her mind off to a happier land of dreams. At least in her dreams, she wasn’t so dirty. |
